I stayed at this hotel with my parents and sister in 2 rooms. We are all adults. We did a 7 day cruise on the Sapphire Princess and spent 2 nights at the Denali Princess Lodge.
LOCATION:
The location of the hotel is great. Just minutes from Denali Nat'l Park. Across the street are lots of shops and restaurants. I highly recommend the fish & chips at the Salmon Bake. I must've had fish & chips at 5 different places over the course of the vacation and theirs was the best! The hotel is on the Nenana River which was a nice overlook.
HOTEL:
The main building is very nice with tons of seating which is good because of all the buses that leave there each day! There is free wireless in the lodge and 3 computers if you didn't bring your own. The connection is spotty but hey, it's free and you're in the middle of nowhere! We took the shuttle to Denali Park and it was no problem. We went for the sled dog demonstration and they knew they would have lots of people so they had numerous buses lined up instead of just one. There is a large variety of shops and restaurants on site. We ate at the pizza place which was suprisingly good. We also had the cinammon rolls from the coffee shop in the main lodge which were tasty.
(Slight gripe here - when I went to get my cinnamon roll, I was the only one in line and there were 4 people working behind the counter. One was icing cinnamon rolls and the other 3 were apparently all trying to fix the coffee machine. Then the icing guy came over to try and help and all 4 of them are standing around watching the other try to fix the coffee machine. They had about 10 cups lined up of drinks to make. Now I think it's important to fix the machine but I don't think you need 4 people especially when only 1 really knows what he is doing. It took about 5 minutes of me standing there (yes they saw me) before finally someone came to take my order!)
Some of the buildings are a "healthy" walk from the lodge but they have a trolley that takes you around. Thankfully our building was the closest so we didn't have to deal with that. Also, because we came off the cruise ship, all our luggage was delivered and picked up from our rooms which saved a lot of hassle. They also had all our room keys and assignments ready to go when we got off the bus so there was no big crowd to check in.
ROOMS:
The rooms were your typical hotel room with a large bathroom. There is no A/C and probably you don't need it but it was warmer than normal so it would have been nice. There is a floor fan. My biggest gripe with this room were the walls! They were paper thin. I could hear every movement and sound from the people above me. And with no "white noise" from an A/C, I couldn't fall asleep until the other guests went to bed. When the person upstairs flushed their toilet, it sounded like a giant waterfall was going to come crashing through the ceiling.
I'd also like to point out the lady (another guest) with the young toddler who let him go screaming and running down the hallway at 11pm at night. This is NOT OK. I opened the door and she just smiled at me. When I let her know it was late at night and people were trying to sleep, she coyly said "sorry" then watched as her son continued to scream and run up the hallway. I called up the front desk and they quickly sent someone down to our building but of course by then, she was gone.
The room service left something to be deserved as well. I came back from a long day to find that our the sink area hadn't been wiped down (there was still a hair in there... was it even mine?) and that a wet towel had simply been re-folded and placed on top of another towel making that one wet. My parents didn't have this issue though and their room was right next door.
Overall, it was a nice hotel and certainly convenient. From reading the other reviews, it seems a lot better if you book this as some sort of Princess package so everything is included. Just bring ear plugs with you and eat across the street!
