We stayed at the Perch for two nights at the end of June 2005. We were a bit apprehensive after reading previous tripadvisor reviews regarding "lost" reservations.

We booked directly through the Perch website. We re-confirmed several times before arriving and our cabin was there when we arrived. The cabins sleep 4 people (1Q bed and 2 singles). One of the beds was located in a loft only accessible by ladder. Yes, the cabin water pump is noisy but that's just the way it is in the country. Each cabin has its own water pump so you shouldn't be bothered by noise unless someone in your cabin is using the water or flushing the toilet.

Breakfasts were OK consisting of pancakes, biscuits&gravy, and eggs (usually in a large container of omelette, quiche, etc.), and either juice or coffee. We did not eat dinner at the restaurant but the Panorama pizza/pub (also operated by the Perch) is an experience with local musicians playing on some evenings. Just across the creek is another restaurant that also has a nice menu.

The Perch is about 14 miles south of the park entrance.

Don't expect four star accomodations but most of your time will probably be spent in Denali NP anyways. This is not luxury but it is good value considering breakfast is included in the price.

The restaurant menu looked like the food would be awesome, but after the waitress referred to me as "ma'm" about 400 times while I sat and had ONE beer, I knew I could not sit through a meal there.

There are a cluster of chalet type cottages which are very close to each other. The cottage was cute, and decorated very nicely. You can tell some thought and some money was put into the quilts, and the wallpaper, but the room was VERY CRAMPED! Cute loft area for the kids, but absolutely no room in the "cottage" other than to stand next to the bed, or walk outside, or into the bathroom. TOO SMALL. The noise from the water pump in the bathroom was horribly and unbearably loud.

Some good news: breakfast comes with the price of the room. The first morning we were up early and had a wonderful breakfast with homemade muffins, quiche/pizza and good coffee. More bad news: It is served no later than 9 am, but the info in the room states it is served until 11! So the second morning we missed out. There were no apologies for this, only an insincerely incredulous innkeeper, who could not understand why that info was still in the room. I met another FEW people staying there who also had the same info in their room. Some changes need to be made and this place could be awesome.

“Interesting -- but not in a good way!”

Our experience was similar to the last review for our early Aug 2003 visit. When I contacted them to find out why they hadn't billed my credit card in May-- they said they had lost my CC# when an earthquake had caused coffee to spill on my #. I should have taken this as an act of God and been warned not to stay here! We were also told one price and then it was raised when I called back. Our cabin was barely adequate. No extras at all -- for instance no clock to wake you up for the bus trip into Denali!!! Then they gave us a wind up clock that didn't work when we asked for one. Apparently a huge flood had moved through just behind the cabins a week before our arrival. Maybe that was why the water pressure was non- existant. The water trickled out either freezing cold or scalding hot. Our advice to our 12 year old daughter was to not attempt a shower with her long hair or we would still be there! The toilets did a weird "wooshing" sound 4 times for every flush. We met some nice people on the bus ride into Denali and when we told them where we were staying the little girl and mother covered their mouths and burst out laughing! They too had had a bad experience and theirs involved trouble with the owner. We laugh everytime we think of our experience here. I guess that is what makes funny vacation stories. We certainly would not reccomend this place to anyone! Pay a little more and stay somewhere else!

“Extreme caution when reserving room”

I made a reservation in early March for our vacation in July for a private bath cabin. I was told at that time they had a private bath cabin, and my credit card wouldn't be charged until May for the deposit. After not receiving a confirmation in May, I contacted the Perch regarding my reservation only to find out a private bath cabin had not been reserved. Rather than the Perch honor my reservation for a private bath cabin, they tried to "shuffle" me off to another place. In addition, not only did they have my reservation incorrect, they even recorded my credit card number wrong. Very incompetent location. Again, BE VERY WARY WHEN MAKING A RESERVATION AT THE PERCH!!!!
