My family of three adults was scheduled to stay in a cabin with a bathroom for 3 nights. I know that hotels in Denali are expensive, and knew we'd be roughing it at the Perch. But I expected more for $150/night. I'm surprised by the positive reviews I've read. Here's a summary of our experience:
- The cabin was tiny; mattresses and pillows were old; covers and curtains looked like they hadn't been washed/replaced in decades; there were stains on our bed sheets; carpet was dark and gross; towels were threadbare. Our faucet leaked, and the pipes must have leaked too because a large area of the carpet was soaked. There was no shower head and an enormous soft soap dispenser, the only toiletry that was provided, collapsed into the tub. Fortunately, no one was there (we hadn't even gotten a chance to take a shower before this "incident").
- Unlike other reviewers, we thought the owners/staff weren't particularly helpful, certainly not warm or friendly; the breakfast which was included in the room rate was very disappointing; again hostess wasn't inviting, didn't refill empty serving plates; put out cold tortillas and shredded cheese; guests were puzzled about that particular dish; hostess finally offered to throw some eggs on the tortilla and warm it up; we didn't eat much. For obvious reasons, we chose not to eat dinner here.
- Unfortunately, the best part of our experience was that our flight to Alaska was canceled, and there was no way we could arrive at the cabin for the first night. This shortened our stay to 2 nights instead of 3. We were actually thrilled about this. BTW - owners take the refund policy seriously - refused to reimburse/discount the first night. I certainly understand their position, but beware that they won't budge and buy travel insurance.
To be fair, I should say that we didn't complain to anyone - just wanted to get through the experience. I am sorry to say that this was the worst accommodation we've ever stayed at, and we've traveled extensively in the states and abroad.
