“loved this hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

This was our second experience staying at a hostel, the first one being in Whitehorse earlier on our trip. Both were excellent experiences. We were traveling with our son and daughter in law and stayed side by side with them in iceworm 1&2, essentially 2 identical rooms separated by a wall with separate entrances in one large cabin with a shared porch. The interiors were rustic and charming, clean and the beds comfortable. Linens, comforters and towels provided. The weather was extraordinarily hot the days we were there so we did not need to use the heater. There were plenty of lights and outlets and hooks to hang things, and the room got dark enough with the curtains that we could sleep, even though it never got dark outside. We were right across from the lovely creek and close to the bathrooms (which were very clean) and common area. The kitchen is large, clean and well equipped and coffee available in the morning. Staff was very helpful with advice on where to hike and there are informational books and maps all over the common area. We enjoyed hanging around the campfire right by the rushing creek with other guests the last evening we were there. Wi-fi available in the common area which was great. This is a great deal for the independent traveler on a budget or if looking to avoid the crowded tourist areas.

I stayed 3 nights and have enjoyed my stay here. The log cabin was awesome. It was so comfortable like a home. The kitchen has full facilities and big. There is a big dinning table. Beside all the log cabins there is a beautiful, clear creek running beside. You can sit by the creek and enjoyed the water or even have a campfire or BBQ. This ambience gives you a true Alaskan feeling. I enjoyed relaxing and sitting by the creek.
The staff are very helpful and friendly. They even helped me to book another hostel in Fairbanks. There is a free shuttle to the Denali National Park & Preserve.
My only concern is that for the men, we have to use the toilet outside, a short walk from the cabin. It is not so convenience esp. in the middle of the night if you need to use the toilet. However, this is not a major issue. Just don't drink too much water before you go to bed.
Stay here if you want to enjoy the creek!

Room Tip: Avoid the TRAIN WRECK OR YANERT cabin as they are too far from the toilets.

Hello! Thanks for another great review! We're glad to read that you enjoyed our small slice of paradise. The fire pit and the creek are a great place to hang out and meet the other guests and simply enjoy the view of the creek and mountains surrounding the hostel. Our shared restroom facilities are centrally located on our property, so they can be a short walk from some of our cabins that are on the edge of our property, but nothing is more than a 30-second walk from anything else on the property- having central shared showers and restrooms, rather than en suite restrooms for all of our cabins, helps us keep our costs down so that we can pass our low prices on to all of our guests! Thanks again for your review and for your advice to our future guests. We hope to see you next time you make it back to Denali!

You have look out carefully for the turn-off into the hostel. It's marked with a sign 'hostel' and 2 red cones. We booked the ice worm cabin which was cozy. Check-in was quick and the staff is friendly and helpful. The portable heater was working very well at heating up the room. The bed was comfortable and the view of the creek from our window was beautiful. Towels are provided. A fire was made in the outdoors near the creek every evening and guests can admire the scenery (we went in June when daylight was long - sun sets around 3 am) while warming themselves by the fire in the evenings. Bathrooms are shared and located within easy/close walking distance from our cabins. The restrooms and bathrooms are heated. Guests need to strip their bedsheets, towels and pillow casings when they check out. 2 restaurants are located across the road from the hostel and the food there is good.

Hi and thanks for the great review! We're happy to hear you had a warm and comfortable stay. A word about our sign- our original one blew down in high winds last fall. We have new ones painted and ready to go up just as soon as our contractor has time! For now, you're right, you do have to be on the lookout for the hostel, but hopefully our new sign will be up soon! Come back next summer and check it out!

I stayed there 3nights, one night at private tent, two nights at dorm.

It's a little far away from the park. But there is shuttle bus and it was nice view when I was going there, so it's not a big problem.

The tent was actually cold at night for me (even it was my first time to sleep outside) but there was not any bugs inside. The dorm was great. Bed was so comfortable and so cute, the room is so warm and clean. There are lights -and plugs for each bed. There are enough toilet and showers inside and outside so you don't need to worry about rush.

Moreover the lobby and kitchen are amazing. Super clean and have everything!

People's are nice too!

If I have a chance to back to the park, I'll stay there again. Thanks!

Greetings and thanks for another great review! We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay, and that you chose Denali Mountain Morning Hostel for your first overnight adventure in a tent! Way to go! It can definitely get a bit chilly at night in Alaska, but we do supply our tents with zero-degree sleeping bags, and we also have a stash of extra blankets for anyone who needs them, so if you come back to visit, please feel free to request one! Thanks again to my wonderful staff for keeping the hostel so clean and working hard to create a memorable and enjoyable experience for all of our guests!

My wife and I spent three nights here recently. I enjoyed our cozy cabin next to the river and fire. Common area is nice with a good size well maintained kitchen and bathrooms. They have a shower house area with a couple private shower bathrooms along with two private showers. They were clean and heated. Only negative was it is somewhat close to the highway so you hear large trucks barreling down the highway every night. We had to wear ear plugs to help us sleep which is something I don't normally do. Definitely would stay here again though and would recommend it.

Hello and thanks for your review! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that you appreciated the clean facilities. We know a clean space is important to our guests, so we make it a priority as well, and I have to take the opportunity to thank our awesome staff for keeping up on this! Sorry to hear about the noise from the highway- unfortunately, that can be an issue at many of the properties in the Denali area, as most of us are not too far off the highway. We do have earplugs for sale here at the hostel, so hopefully that was a help. We appreciate you taking the time to review us here, and hope to see you again in Denali for an enjoyable and restful stay!

We stayed in the razorback for two nights. I realize that the weather caused many problems for the opening of MMH, but it sure would have been nice if the path to the octagon room had been better prepared. It was like walking on a sheet of ice to get to the bathroom.... some cinders would have helped with the slick walking area and the steps. We were not permitted to park near our cabin except for 5 minutes but we did not realize that it was not being enforced because others parked overnight, so with that in mind...we lived out of our trunk for two days. The day we visited Denali we came back to find that the heaters were unplugged so it took quite a long time to get warm. Still cant figure out why they had to enter our cabin at all because there was no housekeeping. Oh well. Oh yes ...one more thing...the main room is closed from from 10:00 to 4:00 daily. When I phoned them with my concerns....they apologized but stated they were thinking the sun would melt the ice eventually so they were not concerned and that they did not take license plates to enforce the parking. They also said they do enter cabins and unplug heaters....so if you like being warm when you come home....maybe you should address this when you check in.

Hello Patty;

Thanks for your comments. We have taken them under consideration.

Start up this year was very difficult for us. Our April was more like our usual February/March with regard to temperature. In fact, it was the coldest April on record so we had a lot of drainage/freezing /snow/ice issues to deal with when you stayed. Our first real warming was during your stay. We experienced melting of snow onto frozen ground which would puddle during the day and freeze at night. We did our best to clear it and only had marginal success as you noted. The trails were ice covered and slippery at times and we apologize for that.

We would like to clear up a couple of things you mention in your post that aren’t accurate. As you noted we have 5 minute parking available nearer the cabins and we don’t allow people to leave their cars there overnight so all guests can utilize them. You obviously listened when told to only use them temporarily while others may not have, so we thank you for that. However, no one was told they could leave their vehicles there overnight. The short-term parking is there so people can unload their belongings into their cabins. You would have been able to do that and not live out of your trunk for two days.

Housekeeping does go into all the cabins and rooms to turn off heat in the mornings, especially when the temperatures during the day are warm. I think that is pretty common everywhere. We don’t want to heat empty cabins; it is a waste of energy and adds to the cost and therefore the price. It doesn’t take long to heat up the cabin, and that particular cabin has two 1500 watt heaters and a propane stove and oven, so it normally heats up very quickly. We will continue to do this.

The common room in our lodge which also contains our kitchen is shut down for about two hours a day for cleaning. This occurs between 10 AM and 4 PM, but it is not closed for 6 hours, contrary to your post.

We are sorry you didn’t enjoy your trip to Alaska and the inclement weather conditions. We always try to do our best and always will. We pay attention to TripAdvisor comments and appreciate hearing the good and the bad. It keeps us on our toes and makes our efforts feel worthwhile. So thank you for sharing yours with us. Happy Travels.

My family of four: two adults and two older kids stayed in Denali Mountain Morning Hostel on our summer visit to Denali. We absolutely loved our experience here and would highly recommend it to anyone. Our cabin "Two Rocks" was very comfortable and clean. "Octagon" - the main dorm and kitchen/common room was right next door as were the showers/restrooms. The kitchen facilities are great: spacious, clean, and had everything that you would ever need to prepare yourself a meal. Showers were clean and tidy. The setting of the hostel is just lovely with the river right next door and very close to the park's entrance.

Hello and thanks for the review! We are so happy to hear that you had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The Two Rocks Cabin is one of the best for our larger families- very spacious and as you mentioned, right next to our common area (the Octagon) and shower facilities. We also have another great cabin, the Coffee Grinder, that is suitable for larger families and is set facing our beautiful Carlo Creek. The inside of this cabin got a face lift this year, and if you and your family are able to return to Denali you will have to check it out! As always, we are continuing to work hard and update our property for your enjoyment! Thanks again for the review and we hope to see you in Denali down the road!
