“Nice place but food management could be better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

My family of 5 adults and one toddler stayed in one of the 6 person cabins during the end of their season. The cabin was spacious, clean and organized. We were provided with all the usual comforts, and the location was just perfect: by a creekside, with views of nearby mountains, and only 15min from the main entrance to Denali Natl. Park.

We had heard good things about the on-site restaurant and this was one of our main reasons for choosing to stay here. However, the experience was somewhat marred by our poor food experience here. Firstly, they provide a complimentary box of candy, which in our case was months passed the expiration date. We didn't realize this until we bit into the stale candy. Secondly, the restaurant advertises all kinds of food options. The staff also told us upon check-in that they could make several things to order, especially since most of my family is vegetarian. However, when we actually went to the restaurant for a meal we found that they were out of several key ingredients for the season (like pasta, hummus etc.!) and were only able to make a simple salad/sandwich for us. Being able to manage food supply, especially for non-perishables, even during the end of their season, should not be difficult for an establishment of this kind.

Another minor issue was that they advertise that one can pick up packaged lunches as early as 6am, but in our case they could only commit to giving us our lunches by 6:30am. If you have a Denali Park bus tour scheduled for any earlier than 7am, this would be a problem. Luckily, our bus wasn't until 7:15am, so we made it to the park safely with our lunches and with some time to spare.

Otherwise, the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place to everyone, though I might try one of the other options for accommodation in the area the next time I'm up there.

Room Tip: The smaller (2-4 person) cabins near the creek seem perfect!

Stayed here for 3 nights in September, 2013. The cabins were small and the bathroom was tiny. The cabins were nicely heated and you can control the temperature as you wish. Basically we had a queen sized bed, 2 wooden chairs and a small table. Not a spa resort, but since we basically were just sleeping here, we didn't need it to be. It rained the entire day we drove up from Anchorage (about 3.5 hours) and the stream was flowing nicely but nothing to worry about. The restaurant was quaint with about 10 tables. Menu was limited as they were getting ready to close for the season and we were closing them down. The food was tasty. The service was friendly. Although the location was 15 miles from Denali, it was an easy drive each day. The location was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay here and didn't mind being away from the hundreds or thousands of others that stay at the larger places right outside the park.

We stayed for 4 nights at the McKinley Creekside Cabins while visiting the Denali area. Clean and comfortable with coffee pot, microwave and mini-frig. Our cabin had a deck overlooking the river with a table and chairs and also deck chairs on the river bank. There was also a community firepit that we had a great time sitting around in the evening. The restaurant was wonderful and the staff all very pleaant. Definitely recommend it.

We had a great stay- Beautiful setting, friendly and helpful staff, quality restaurant. One of our nights, however, was interrupted at approx. 1:00am by a crowd of screaming and shouting people. This went on for at least two hours and seemed to be right outside the cabin door. I questioned the management as to why they let this go on so long and they responded that there is a bar directly across the creek that at times draws a rowdy, loud crowd. It seems out of the
control of the McKinley Creekside. I wouldn't let this stop me from staying here but it is an issue.

Thanks for the feedback. There is a pub next door and this is not usually an issue, however occasionally they get a little rowdy, I do apologize. We are glad that otherwise that you enjoyed your time with us and Denali NP, truly the last frontier!

Our four nights in the small cabin at McKinley Creekside Cabins were not the definition of luxury, but we were there for an outdoors rustic experience, and this was perfect for the purpose. Clean and cozy, with working bathroom fixtures and heaters and warm comfortable beds, the cabin was great for long evenings playing card following dinner in the attached restaurant. And the dinners AND breakfasts were outstanding and convenient. Service at the restaurant was exceptional. We'd stay here again without question.

Room Tip: On our next visit, we may upgrade our cabin and request one further from the main road--possibly one...

It always puts a smile on our face when guests truly enjoy the property and what we have to offer. We are not luxury cabins but try to provide clean, comfortable cabins, close to the park at reasonable rates for the area and seasonal nature of our business. Glad you enjoyed the cafe and food. We were blessed to have an amazing crew and the kitchen staff and servers really went out of their way to produce quality food for our guests. Perhaps we'll see you again in Denali, an amazing place!

We stayed here for a lovely 3 days. The cabins were small but comfortable and clean. We were blessed with great weather so we only used them for sleep. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food at the Café was very nice indeed. Great location to the park and town and all activities. Definitely recommend it.

Although there were only two of us, because nothing else was available, we booked the Carlo House. Designed for a larger group, we only used one of the bedrooms out of three. Kitchen, baths and laundry are all top shelf. Living room while small for the eight people it was designed for was certainly very comfortable for us.

Interaction with staff was always very pleasant and helpful.

Your feedback is appreciated. The Carlo House is a beautiful house that would very comfortably accommodate a traditional family of 4, but we have provided bedding for 8. So the communal areas for dining and living room that are comfortable for 4, are cozy for 8. The bathrooms are large and more than adequate and we provided a covered outside dining area to address those concerns. Thanks for mentioning them, as it is an amazing house, and we want potential guests to know what they are getting and enjoy it!
