“Great Room, Good Food... Amazing Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

the only problem I can see people having with this resort is that it's a bit of a hike to and from the reception/restaurant to some of the rooms. so if you're not traveling with your own personal car and you can't handle a brief walk then maybe ask for a room closer to the drop-off/pickup point.

we personally loved our room down the back by the river, warm, roomy and up to date furniture. plenty of parking available and loads of animals wandering about.

entrance to the park is only 5-10mins drive down the road and plenty of other options for adventure around town.

food from the restaurant was great and staff were awesome! will stay again!!!

Ok, I get it. This property is just a short-drive to Denali National Park. Its only open a few months a year, around the park schedule. There aren't a lot of options in the area. I expected it to be poor value, but this place was a huge disappoint: dirty, old rooms, indifferent staff and way overpriced. Apart from its location, this place doesn't have much going for it.

The room was old, dated and dirty. There were cobwebs in the widow frame. The bedding is ancient: old sheets, 1980's style blanket and bedspread. Carpets were filthy, I walked around in shoes for two days and put them on as I exited the shower. The bathroom was dirty and the sink was basically in the bedroom. The Tvs were ancient, tiny tube versions (but they did have some cool travel/adventure channels and programs). Parking was confusing and apparently first come first served. We parked both nights hoping we were in a real parking space as there are no signs or parking lines.

The front staff was distracted and of little help answering a couple questions. I get there were a lot of people in line, but the DMV-like attitude was disappointing. When I called to complain that the room I was given was not what I reserved, I was told the hotel is full but maybe we could be moved the following day. No apology.

There have got to be better properties around Denali Park. I recommend you look for them and pass on the McKinley Chatlet.

Throughout the property there are dome-topped, swinging door garbage receptacles overflowing with trash. I informed the manager at the front desk after confirming with her that there were recent bear sighting on the property. The following day the trash had not been removed so I informed the front desk again. After my second request, the trash remained. Knowing that a nuisance bear often becomes a dead bear is disturbing to me when the life of an animal can easily be saved by installing bear-proof trash receptacles. (The Asilomar Conference Center in CA has bear-proof receptacles throughout the large property). I also shared that guests were setting food outside their rooms on the porches to keep it cool. Again, an invitation for wildlife. Perhaps small refrigerators inside the rooms could solve this problem.

To be fair, my overall experience was quite good. My lodging was right next to the river where a lovely nature trail meanders through the woods (with occasional pieces of trash in the ground cover). The Nenana View Grill offered the best halibut I've ever tasted. The Dinner Theater offers good food, entertainment, and some history about the area. The McKinley Chalet is efficient in provided transportation for hordes of people to and from the train and the Park Headquarters. They even provide a shuttle bus to the cabins down the hill from the main lodge.
Denali is truly a majestic place with magnificent wildlife. I hope it will be preserved and respected in the future.

We stayed here as part of a Holland America Cruise/Land Tour. We have traveled the U.S. and stayed in many NP facilities. This one is no exception. You get a basic room with minimal amenities (soap, shampoo/conditioner ). It is just fine as you really don't spend too much time in your room. Our room was in the 'N' building just down the steep hill from the Main Lodge. We were on the second floor. Our luggage was delivered and waiting for us when we arrived(we were impressed by this level of organization by Holland. ) The first double bed was in the entry area. It had a nightstand, table, lamp and hooks on the wall for hanging clothing. Next came the bathroom area. The commode and nice walk in shower (no tub) were in a separate room with a sink, hairdryer in the outer area. The next room had another double bed with a set of drawers, an armoire with doors for hanging clothing with plenty of hangers. There was a small table and two chairs in the corner with a lamp. There was a nightstand on one side of the bed with a small storage drawer. A TV was available in this room but we really didn't use it. There was nothing on the walls but this is typical of most NP rooms. It was clean and comfortable for the 3 days we were there. We used the free shuttle bus to get to the Main Lodge. It ran frequently enough and most times, was not too crowded (Sept ) The personnel in the Main Lodge were helpful and friendly. We loved the Nenana Bar & Cafe. There is also a small Gift shop that was having an end of season sale so we all found something to buy. It was close to the shops and restaurants across the street. We would stay here again if back in the area. Sometimes people have unrealistic expectations when they hear the words "Resort " or "Chalet ". This is a very rustic facility and we had no complaints.

We booked this hotel as part of a cruise package. We arrived at the last week of the season. All of Denali was winding down. We stayed in the main lodge. We never had to wait for the shuttle. Very personable staff. Food very expensive. Excellent in the bar, cafeteria style in the cafe.
Unfortunately, the park closed on the second day. Activities were all cancelled in the park. We were disappointed but we made do with other things. As for the holland america transfer services they were excellent. Always on time and hassle free.

Our second floor room was adequate, but if you wanted to watch the limited TV, you had to lie in bed since there was no couch or sofa. If you wanted to go to the "main" hotel, you had to hike up a very steep road, or wait in the cold for a shuttle bus. The food in the restaurant was very good, and staff was very helpful and accommodating. We had purchased gifts and pictures the week before, and staff had them ready for us for easy pickup. If we ever return to this area, we would hopefully request the main lodge or stay some place else.

This hotel does have issues with access to the lobby (hills) but they do provide a shuttle bus that says it runs every 10 minutes. Sometimes yes sometimes no. We were in the newest building which is at the bottom of a rather steep hill. We like to walk and the hike up the hill would be difficult for many people. Same with access to the stores and restaurants. Though they are located in about a half mile strip this hotel is at one end of the strip. A bus does run from the hotel to the other end (relatively flat) but it costs $1. The hotel has a nice restaurant and bar. The bar has a nice view of the River and Valley good food. Across the street are shops and the pizza restaurant with many varieties of beer on tap. Be read it is really busy. Tours leave from the lobby so it is always crowded. Large gift shop. Three nights there and we enjoyed it even if we didn't get to see Mt Denali or fly to the glacier (raining and low clouds) enjoyed rafting, ATVing and hiking.
