“Wonderful stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We stayed in the Canyon Lodge on the first leg of our Holland America cruise/tour to Denali and the Yukon. Our room was spacious with two queen beds, two chairs and a table in addition to the dresser w/tv and luggage rack and closet. Although there was no AC, the room was very comfortable with screens in the window and ceiling fan. The beds were very comfortable - as were the pillows (we normally travel with our own except when flying). The room, bathroom, and common areas were very clean. There is quite a steep hill to get to the main lodge, but the property shuttle runs frequently, and we had no issues using that. The gift shop is extensive with souvenirs as well as fruit, cold drinks, and snack foods. There is a Starbucks in the lobby as well as a casual restaurant and a more formal restaurant. Given the location, the prices were what we expected. We would most certainly return to this hotel.

Room Tip: The Canyon Lodge is owned by Holland America......I do not know if all of the accommodations in the...

Was staying across the road in the Grizzly Bear Resort and as this was the nearest eating place...... however, neither breakfast or dinner were up to any mark what so ever.
Breakfast - a self service affair, but despite the hot trays, the buffet food was lukewarm and looked and tasted as if it had been sitting about for some time.
Dinner - even worse - ordered soup, which had to be sent back to the kitchen. It had obviously been through a processor....when, I'm not sure, as when it arrived on the table was lumpy, congealed and, again lukewarm. The waiter passed by my table several times, before stopping to ask - was everything ok......this plate of goo, staring him in the face???!!!

I came to the conclusion this place is just about feeding the masses of people who, probably pass through here once....quality of food, non existent, service ok, if a tad of hand.

If you can muster the energy to drive the 6 miles up the road to Denali Village, you will find a selection of eateries...some of which much better than this offering - but, then that really wouldn't be that hard to improve on.

We stayed here as part of a pre-cruise tour that we took with our brother and his wife. Upon arrival, I noticed that there was a small bit of trash left in the trash can in the bedroom area. While using the restroom, I noticed there was a used feminine product left in the trash can there. So gross! So I went out to the bed room and pulled back the blankets to find that the sheets had not been changed from the previous guest on either of the 2 beds in our room. They were very wrinkled and there was hair and dirt on the sheets. I walked across the hall to have my brother check his sheets and sure enough, they also had 2 beds with dirty sheets on them.

I called the desk and they promptly sent up a lovely young man from Bosnia who took apologized and quickly changed the sheets and emptied the trash. He then went across the hall to take care of our brother's room.

The next morning I went to the front desk and spoke with the Manager on Duty, (Justin, Jason?) who was apologetic and offered us each a $50. gift card for anywhere on the property which we accepted.

I have worked in the Hospitality Industry for over 35 years and was impressed how the situation was handled, however it should have never happened. It was apparent that the employee who had serviced our rooms merely put in clean towels, remade the beds with the used sheets and gave the room a very quick wipe down before moving on to repeat in the next room. I wonder how many of the 35 people in our group unknowingly had dirty sheets on their beds also. I didn't ask anyone because by the next day when we saw the others, it was too late and would have only stirred up something that couldn't be rectified.

The room itself was basic which is fine, but a room MUST be clean. The lobby was beautiful and our meals in the restaurant were good. The gift shop had a good supply of trinkets and necessities and was staffed by a very pleasant woman, This property would have received a much higher score had it not been for the disgusting health hazards in our rooms.

While the exterior is very nice, the transportation is easily accessible, the interiors of the rooms are nothing to write home about. We were in Cabin V, on the lower level (each cabin has about 12 rooms). First of all, to access the lower part of the building you need to take the walkway to the upper floor, walk the length of the building, down the steps and then to your room. If you are dragging luggage its no fun. We ended up parking 3 buildings away and walking the back path to our room. As far as I could tell, there are no rooms with "views". Our view, was a forest, not the mountains, not the river. I would recommend staying in the Cottons if you are staying at the MCR. At least from there you are just a few short steps from the river and the wonderful sound of rushing water. Also, this building has a common lounge and the rooms appeared to be nicer.

Eating options were okay, a bit pricey, but very nice. Staff was very accomodating.

The best part of the MCR was that you could easily arrive by train and have no need of a vehicle. Transportation to the park, ATV tours, water rafting and other area attractions came right to the door. Nice gift shop. Hotel is located just across the highway from the strip, where you can find food, gifts and other small local shops.

Room Tip: I would choose the Commons for my stay.

After hiking and seeing the vast scenic Denali National Park, a good, restful night's sleep was wonderful. The free shuttle allowed us to not have to hike the hills around the hotel. Reports of wildlife around the hotel - moose - was heard - and restaurants and shopping locations are very nearby.

We were on the land tour from a Celebrity Cruise. We were in a 600 number room, facing the bus parking lot and main road. It was too hot to sleep with the window closed, and too noisy to sleep with the window open. We were there two nights. Both nights just as I finally feel asleep the restaurant decided to dump all the glass trash from the restaurant into the dumpster, around 11:30pm. Finally fell asleep after listening to the people talking loudly on their way back to their rooms, and listening to the many tour buses come in and idle first to drop their passengers, and then while finishing parking for the night. This is a vacation to Alaska. Should be somewhat peaceful?? Not so much. DO NOT STAY here unless you are willing to potentially endure this during YOUR vacation. This whole trip to Alaska was not what I expected. I would not recommend a cruise land tour to anyone.

We stayed her for one night before visiting Denali park. Check in was quick and easy. The room had a little to be desired. It was large for families, but it only had 2 double beds, haven't slept in a double bed in 30 years, so a little cramped, but they were in 2 separate rooms. Only one tv in the back bedroom and the front window, along the walkway did not lock. The bathroom had mold growing in the shower, but once it was brought to their attention, the mgr showed up within minutes and had the staff take care of that immediately. Very small vanity/sink, no place to put your toiletries. No a/c so had to hunt for a fan, which was in the closet, this should be kept out in the open. Coffee supplies were on a table right next to the bed, did not like this set up. The location was convenient, but expected more for $170 per night.

Room Tip: Rooms are all in pods of about20 to separate the units so they don't look congested. Parking i...
