We arrived to the Grande Denali Lodge after departing Fairbanks via The Wilderness Express train with a short transfer via motorcoach to get us to the Lodge after a long day in Denali National Park.
The Lodge is lovely, and the rooms are decent sized with comfortable beds (my travel companion likes a firm bed, I prefer one on the softer side, we were both content)
The view from the Lodge and the property is very nice. My biggest issue is with the staff.
I will say first, we were there a couple weeks into the "tourist season" and many of the staff apparently arrived shortly before we did.
"Disorganized" would seem an apt description.
And trying to find out information from ANYONE, in particular, the front desk people was basically a test of wills. They won.
Due to our late arrival from touring Denali, the only restaurant open was their main, higher-end eatery. After the longish day we had, I really wasn't wiling to pay top end prices just to get some food into my stomach.
I asked the restaurant's "greeter" if there was any other options for getting something to eat. He stated "Not on this level.." He wasn't lying, however I *DID* pay attention to the driver that took us up to the Lodge. She mentioned another eatery on another "tier" on the Lodge's property. After twisting arms, I found they had a shuttle that ran between the locations. We took the shuttle 1/2 way down the mountain side to the other eatery. Prices were more moderate, however again, the staff was less than professional. Our server didn't know what they had, what they were out of; how things were made, what they had in particular dishes, etc. We were warned that the scheduled shuttle was about to end as we departed the Lodge down to the eatery, however they did have an unmarked van that shuttled employees and guests "after-hours".
The food wasn't anything to write home about, however it filled our stomachs at a moderate price and soon we were ready to call it a day and get back up the mountain to the Lodge. I went to the front office of the hotel that was attached to the "1/2 way up" restaurant. After waiting for several minutes for the young staff (boys and girls that had just started their season) to quit flirting with one another so they'd help myself and the other two guests that needed assistance, I finally interrupted their verbal foreplay to ask assistance for those in front of me and my party. Well, let's just say they were NOT pleased that I had the nerve to interrupt their "private conversations". Too bad.
Well, sadly, the folks in front of me that were also waiting to get back to the Lodge along with my party had to pay the price for me actually expecting the young people to look after the folks that are paying their paychecks. It was 11 minutes after I requested they contact their van to shuttle us up that they actually made contact with the van driver via radio. Yes, I timed it. It was another 18 minutes before the driver arrived. I saw many of the staff head to the van, so I asked if it was the van that would take us up, and the only one that responded was the driver that stated, yes, he'd gladly take us up (there was 2 in my party, another couple and then a party of 3). It was a 12 passenger van and some of the staff that wanted to "get up to the party" were outraged that the driver said he'd run us up then come back and pick them up.
I hope their party went well and they got better service from their co-workers than any of the guests received that night.
