“Great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for three nights in Sept 2013. We had a comfortable stay. The only negative thing was the maintenance department. On the day of our check out we were woken up at 8 am (knocking on the door) by one of the guys, who wanted to know what time we are checking out! The check out time is at 10 am. This was very annoying!

Dear rajivsamvatsar, thank you so much for your review. I do apologize for the knock on your door. We have changed that policy for 2014. I am glad that you enjoyed the rest of your stay with us. Please come back and we will let you sleep in with no one knocking! Dee Dee

My family of 5 stayed in 2 rooms for 2 nights at the Grande Denali Lodge in August 2013. For the price...I think it was a bit of a rip-off.

Likes:
- the view from the Lodge property was the biggest draw - it has an absolutely beautiful view of the Denali National Park (DNP) area
- we ordered box lunches from the Lodge to bring with us on our DNP tour and the sandwiches were very yummy
- the steep gravel driveway up and down was actually quite fun but can be scary for the not so skilled driver

Not-so-likes:
- rooms were very very outdated and needs some TLC
- the bathroom fans were very loud
- carpet needs some cleaning
- restaurant staff needs training
- parking lot doesn't have enough parking spaces

Dear Clownfish88, thank you for staying with us and also for your review. Our Grande Denali Lodge does have a beautiful view and includes a fun drive to the top. I am happy that you enjoyed our box lunches. As for the condition of our sleeping rooms, we are updating the rooms for 2014 and they will definitely have a new look. Much of our business comes by Alaska Railroad or Motorcoach so many of guests do not require parking. We do have an overflow lot at Denali Bluffs and a shuttle between the two properties. We also have bell staff that can take your bags to and from the sleeping rooms for you. We will look into more parking but as you know, we are on the side of a mountain and there is not much area for additional parking. Thanks so much, Dee Dee Kay

We stayed here in August and on the whole had a good time. Our room was on the top floor with nice views and very spacious indeed. Breakfast was good, they brought me a gluten free toasted bagel to compliment the fruit and yoghurt I could have a the buffet, which was very nice. It was an easy 10 minute walk down the hill to the shops but you can take the shuttle which runs every half hour to and fro. Love the funny signs on the road up to the Hotel.
Our only problem was finding when we got there at 9.30pm that we were booked for our Denali Trundra tour at 7am the next day instead of 2pm! Front desk said they had nothing to do with the bookings so we asked if we could ring the tour people from the front desk which we did. Luckily someone was still there to answer and after a lot of checking up and talking with one of the front desk people it was sorted and our booking was confirmed for 2pm. Still don't know why the hotel had us down for 7am. But the tour was fantastic! We even got to see Mt McKinley.
We really liked the beautiful pictures in the hotel dining area and it was good to be able to use the guest computer downstairs in our block to check emails as well.

Dear Shirleep, thank you so much for staying with us. We actually don't control the time tours are booked into the park so perhaps we were given the incorrect information from the company that confirms these tours BUT more importantly our staff was able to resolve the situation for you. Our staff is incredible and will go out of their way to help with any concerns. Thank you for noticing the beautiful paintings in the lobby area. They were painted by one of the original owners. It is fun to watch people coming up the hill taking photos of our silly signs. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. Please come back again soon! Dee Dee Kay

We rented two rooms for a three day stay at the beginning of September. We found the hotel to be very tired and the service well below standard. In general the hotel seems to be staffed by East European students who aren't well trained in hotel room service or cleaning in general. One day our towels were replaced but the beds not made. Everyday the coffeemaker packets were replaced with new but the old cold coffee still left in the pot. Open packets of sugar and creamer were left on the sideboard and no sign of a wipe down or any carpet vacuuming going on. We would put the Maid Service required on the door at 7 am come back to the room mid afternoon and still find the beds unmade.

The views are amazing from the hotel and the whole experience with better trained staff could be a wonderful one.

Dear dbartlettmay, I am so sorry to hear of your experience with us. Were you able to contact our front desk or Rooms Division Manager to let them know of the challenges. The service you received was certainly not the standard we want our guests to have. I do apologize and will be making sure that your comments are forwarded on to our management team. Were you able to join us for any meals in the main lodge. I know that you mentioned the Eastern Europeans in house - "yes" as a matter of fact we do hire students from Eastern Europe as well as students from hospitality programs in the US. Alaska is a huge market for seasonal employees in the summer and tourism businesses throughout state hire people from all over the world. Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us and they will be forwarded on to the proper managers. Thanks Dee Dee Kay

Thank you so much for staying with us and for your review. We do have a WONDERFUL staff and although you can't see Denali from the lodge, we are minutes away from a spectacular view of Denali. I hope you were able to enjoy the deck at the lodge and the wonderful view into Denali National Park.. The fall colors were amazing this past weekend. Thanks again for staying with us and come back soon! Dee Deee

I normally don't like to write negative reviews, but this one warranted so to warn others. I travel a lot and have booked many accommodations in many of our National Parks. Never have I seen a staff so burnt out on customer service and the lack of. It was the last weekend this property was open and the lack of effort was apparent. We arrived earlier afternoon to ensure getting our cabin and settling in for a memorable vacation. At first when we arrived they said our reservations wasn't ready yet. So we waited an hour and checked-in again. They checked us into a room, when I realized this as we walked away I went right back and said I had reserved a cabin. It took several tries later and the manager to finally relent and give me one of their overbooked cabins. I was very angry. I had originally called three weeks before to their front desk and was told to call this other number because they didn't take advance reservations prior to 72hrs ahead of the arrival date. I complied, because I know this can sometimes be true. I chatted over the phone with Alaska Tour and Travel who helped me book a cabin and gave me all kinds of helpful information. Was charged in full because was within the 30 days and received my confirmations via email and mail. If I hadn't had my mail confirmation with me and stated that this was my 15th wedding anniversary, they would not have given me my cabin. In fact, at first they just handed me keys to my room without any explanation. He kept saying they had problems with Alaska Tour and Travel and that they were overbooked in their cabins. I stated that I thought I should get one, especially since I was obviously one of the first to arrive. Anyway, you get the picture. The front desk staff was very elusive and kept walking to the room behind the desk, very off putting, very unprofessional. The food in the restaurant was like they were trying to get rid of all their old food before the season ended. We ate twice in the bar and both meals were terrible, no imagination, presentation, or good taste. Very disappointing. The cabin itself was fine, at least it was private (what I was after). But they don't let you turn the heat up, you turn up the base board heaters and nothing really comes out. The maid service was also very minimal, I had coffee and they rinsed out the pot but never cleaned it or took the coffee filter out that I had used. The list goes on. One shining moment, their bellmen were way more friendlier and accommodating. There were two girls during breakfast that were actually friendly and helpful. The rest of the staff, no.

I get it's the end of the season you are sick of tourists and are done with it already since you probably get crap pay. However, there are many people out there that would kill to have a job right now and all their attitudes were deplorable. The management team leading this group really needs to start with themselves and take some pride with such a promising property. Too bad, I will not recommend this place to anyone. I would not want them to go through what I did.

Room Tip: Make sure you pick something in the Denali park area, Healy is too far and the facilities don't...

Dear "crazyforfoodanytime", I am so sorry that you had a "far from perfect" stay at our lodge. As you know, this was lottery weekend and we did have some reservations that came through our system and missed being put in the system correctly and as you can imagine we were completely sold out. That is no excuse for the way your situation was handled and the care that should have been taken in cleaning your cabin. Ironically, there is a review on the same date that raves about our staff. What that tells me, is that there was not consistency in the way our staff took care of our guests. We have received raves on our staff all year long and although we were only 4 days or so from closing, I would hope that they would still be treating our guests will enthusiasm and politeness. This time of year, we also lose staff as they go back to school, etc. so short staffing may have been an issue as well. I hope that you will give us another try next year. I am passing your concerns on to our team. What happened in the system was CERTAINLY no fault of Alaska Tour and Travel. I do apologize for the errors on our end. Happy belated Anniversary. I hope you will spend your 16th with us as well! Dee Dee Kay

We stayed at one of "cabins" and it was very peaceful, nice, clean and extremely comfortable. The views were excellent from the private balcony. It was a 1/4 mile walk up the access road or a straight up hike on the trail to the main lodge but the privacy was worth it. You could also call for the shuttle "ranger" to pick you up or drop you off. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in all areas. Their bar area had the most friendly fun waiters and the food was excellent. They also have a nice gift shop with some different type items and the staff was very knowledgeable about the area. The location is at the top of a mountain and the drive up with switch back road is made fun by the funny road signs. Looks like they thought of everything.

Room Tip: If you are there for any time either get a cabin (a little extra) or get the Kodiak Lodge and ask fo...

Dear Carolb, thanks so much for your review and for staying with us. Are cabins are very cozy and fun. It is a long walk to some of them so we do try to make sure guests know that it can be a bit of a "hike" or that one of our vehicles is very willing to come pick you up. But you are correct, the walk is worth every penny as the cabins have a wonderful view and are very peaceful! Dee Dee Kay
