“Good hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

This is an ok hotel, the room are not great but they're ok. The staff at reception is nice. The restaurant has nice food. Lovely view from the restaurant windows.
I would just say that this hotel is way too expensive for what it is.

Stuff I loved: the location, views from the lobby, proximity to the park and Healy's main (only) drag, the cafe where I could get a latte.

The rooms were noting special at all--felt like a budget hotel but we were paying more than budget prices. The restaurant--beautiful, but the variety was very limited and my friend had food allergies. The only thing she could eat on the menu, they were out of.

Biggest word of advice: Out of towers don't realize that at the end of the season, everything shuts down. This means great souvenir sales, but no new food shipments. You get whatever's left.

We visited Denali at the end of the season enjoying the Park in all its glory and recommend a visit at this time of the year, but I would council visitors to look for alternative accommodation .

Yes , the hotel does have superb views ,if you are lucky enough to get a room with a view, but most do not enjoy that privilege .We found the location a distinct disadvantage , being so far from the town, the shops , the restaurants and where most of the tours originate from . The hotel does provide curtesy vans and bus, however we found them unreliable - we were left waiting in the cold at 7.30 PM for 50 minutes after a full day tour of the Park.

We dined in the Lodge on 2 occasions . One meal was excellent and the other a huge disappointment.

The hotel closes down at the end of September (as do most hotels in this region) and most of the staff loose their jobs . Perhaps the staff were in close down mode when we visited. The manager was married that weekend as well and that was used as an excuse for the lack of staff.

The lodge is located overlooking a scenic area. The room was clean with lots of space. The restaurant had good food and great views. Overall I think this place was fantastic. It's a lodge
not a five star hotel. It reflects Alaska - the rustic, natural beauty. You won't regret the stay!

I loved this hotel. It was situated on a side of a mountain, and had beautiful views of the village , the river and the mountains. The rooms were a nice size. The breakfast area had a view of the mountains that was breathtaking, nice to start the morning viewing. The lobby was large with a fireplace making it cozy. You had to drive a curvy road to get there but it was worth it.

Hello! Thank you for the awesome review, and we agree, the curvy road that brings you to our property is definitely worth the Million Dollar View that you get when staying at the Grande Denali Lodge.

We hope to see you again soon!

This lodge is just that, a lodge. Country rustic themed, it sits high above the town on the cliff side. There are amazing views and gorgeous sunrises. The staff is friendly and helpful. Extra towels were delivered immediately. If the Northern Lights happen to appear you can have your name put on a call list at the front desk and they will wake you in the night for the viewing. There is a laundry room for the guests which we loved being able to wash all our dirty laundry and start with fresh packed cases again. There is a separate vanity outside the bathroom. The restaurant has really good food with amazing bread and a large deck for viewing. There is a free shuttle down the mountain into the little town. It was a great experience and a great place to stay.

Room Tip: There are three buildings of rooms and one of them has views off the side of the cliff. There are al...

On our recent trip to Alaska, we spent two nights at the Grande Denali Lodge. It was dark when we arrived by bus from Talkeetna. There are only three places where visitors are dropped off when visiting this area. Grande Denali Lodge is not one of them. So what happend is they dropped us at the Denali Bluffs and the shuttle there took us to the Grande Denali. I think they are owned by the same person/company. So that made our trip a little longer. Others had to do the same thing so it's not that big a deal, I guess. The driveway to the Bluffs is a little steep but the drive to the Grande is really steep. During daylight, you can read amusing signs that are along the drive-such as "Watch out for falling coconuts" or "Watch out for flying aircraft" and the hilarious sign of a giant mosquito carrying off a child. The check-in desk was ready for the group on the bus and we were checked in super quickly-like 5 minutes. The part of the lodge with check-in has beautful exposed wood beams and tons of windows. That is pretty. And there's a big fireplace but it is gas logs-not real wood. The lodge has two buildings that are separate from the check in/restaurant building and some private cabins that are perched on the cliffs. It was raining and the bell man took out bags to our room so we could get something to eat-it was late-like 9:30 or so. The drive/parking areas are not really paved-but gravel so it's hard to take your bags yourself or if they are heavy without help. When we got to our room, it was fine. Clean. Warm. Dry. The beds were comfy-there was plenty of hot water. It was not fancy but clean and ok. You don't really spend much time in your hotel room anyway. It was kind of your basic hotel room. It was very quiet. And there were a lot of folks there but it was still quiet. We had breakfast twice and it was good. There is a buffet that opens at 5am which is good since practically every tour leaves at the crack of dawn anyway. I will say that the views are amazing-you are perched on top of a mountain with shear sides and can see everything in the village as well as all the mountains that surround the area. The front desk was vey helpful. We had our wilderness trip cancelled because of all the snow that had fallen (yes it was early September) and they helped us find another trip that would be in the afternoon so we wouldn't miss Denali. Unfortunately, the snow still prevented us going into the park on such a trip. The roads were too dangerous with the snow and ice so the park was closed. There are lots of places to eat in the village and the lodge has a good shuttle that runs continuously so it is easy to leave and go to town. It only picks up at the gas station but since that is the center of everything, that is not a problem. If I come to this area again, I am not sure if I would stay there. As an older person, getting around easily with luggage is a concern and was a concern for me there as well as walking from our building to the main lodge in rain, sleet and snow (yes-it was September). But then, I am not sure about those in the village because I really didn't see inside them either. SO--if I come again, I will look around a bunch first.

Your review was so detailed, I am impressed. We do have gorgeous views and I am glad that you noticed, though to have those views we do have to be a step above the rest, as you noted regarding the climb to our hotel, however it's nice to see that someone noticed our amusing signs along the road to the Grande!

We are under new management and have big plans to help make our guests experience more pleasing and comfortable. We are so excited about the new season and look forward to sharing the experience we've been working hard to create. I hope that if you come back to Denali you find yourself once again at the Grande Denali Lodge
