It's an cool icy feeling! Yes, It looks icy cold but it's not hard frozen lake. It's a prehistoric flat lake that is -286 below sea level.

Unearthly scene here and geologically fascinating....nice walkways and good signage by National Park Service.

“Don't Miss It”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

This is the classic Death Valley spot--lowest in the US. It is pretty amazing when you walk out there and look around. (Be sure to look back towards the road where the sign is posted up on the rock face indicating sea level (and how far below it you are)!

“Salt fields”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

Wow, you walk out on a boardwalk that is -282 ft below sea level and then you can walk out onto the salt. It is so thick that it looks like snow.

“Lowest Point”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

A cool spot in America where you can say, "I've been there" and everyone excitedly replies,"Really!?" Not much to it though. A few signs along the basin and a path to keep on in the middle of a salt flat. The sea level sign in the mountains really shows how low the area is.
