“Great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

After lots of research, it seemed all the places to stay in the area had mixed reviews. Decided to just go for it. Really pleased with our choice. Yes,parts look a bit run down. The main things were really good. Our room was big, clean. We switched air con off when we went to bed as thought it might keep us awake and it wasn't too hot. Did hear someone at breakfast say it had kept them awake so glad we did.Good sized fridge. Busy when we checked in but guess everyone gets there late afternoon. Pleasant staff at check in. Pool open until midnight. Saloon food was great , their desert nachos fantastic, cooked fresh when ordered. Lady serving was really nice. We had breakfast in the the dining room, again great, as was the lady. Choice of full or continental,we had continental, never fancy too much first thing. I would certainly recommend staying here. Also store across the road.

Room Tip: Would think they would all be very similar. We where in 49'rs .

Dear Pauline W,

Thank you so much for your recent stay and wonderful review of our property. I am happy to see that you enjoyed our restaurant, pleasant staff and your overall stay! We are honored to provide lodging accommodations in Death Valley National Park. Recently, we have had the opportunity to do several property upgrades, such as; add a brand new patio floor outside of our patio rooms, paint some of the buildings, and refinish our kitchen floor. We are excited for all of our guests to see some of the little projects we continue to do to our property and hope you will see them as an improvement. We hope you will come back and stay with us again!

Kind regards,

Bekah Hiestand

Five of us, two couples and a young adult, spent a night in a double queen deluxe room, they were able to provide us with a roll away bed for a reasonable fee. The room was very nice and the AC worked great!

Racheal at the front desk made sure that we had everything we needed including extra towels. The pool was clean and open late enough for a swim after dinner. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The dune view was OK, but you have to look over the cars in the parking lot.

We stayed here again for 3 nights in early September. The property had changed ownership since we were last here. Check- in staff were efficient and helpful.
The room overlooked the car park. It was quite clean with the noisy air conditioning. Made sleeping a bit of a problem.
Rooms are a little bit dated but I kind of don’t mind that. You expect something quite rustic. As we stayed for 3 nights, a fridge would have been good. ( nothing in room info about hiring one) Wifi near non existent, but what do you expect here. TIP * wifi is best in the RV car Park - where benches are!*

We stayed overnight in a "dune view deluxe" room. The room was fairly basic with two queen beds, a TV, vanity and bathroom. The air conditioner was old and noisy, but did the job. The room was quite clean, with the exception of hairs on the shower wall. The bath was rust-stained and soap and shampoo provided in wall dispensers. The dunes were not that visible from the room, especially with a dust storm, which are quite fequent in the area.

Stovepipe Wells Village is essentially the motel, a campground, store, gas station, restaurant and bar. It has a more genuine western atmosphere than Furnace Creek. The location is convenient for the Mesquite Dunes and Mosaic Valley. There is no cell phone coverage and satellite wifi is only available in the guest lounge, being limited and sporadic at best.

Stayed in deluxe double queen room with a view of the Dunes. Slept well but we had driven from the Grand Canyon. The staff was friendly and check in quick, but there was a rush of folks after us. (Many didn't have reservations.) Breakfast & Dinner in the restaurant was ok. (Had a large salad with chicken.) Went swimming in the pool the next day before check out which was great. Of course in Death Valley there is limited if any cell phone service, no phones in the rooms (but they have phone booths), and the two guest computers weren't useful since the satellite internet service was down while we were there. The surrounding area is beautiful. Great location for our travels. Really does have some of the best gas values; only higher prices has we headed west. We got a discount on the room while looking on Tripadvisor.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the dunes have a great view. All the rooms have loud AC units but they are running all...

Having stayed last year this was a repeat visit to Stovepipe Wells. The room we had (in the ‘69ers’ block) was newly refurbished compared to the older room we had last year. Reviews which criticise the rooms at this place seem to miss the point… you’re staying in Death Valley not Las Vegas!

From our experience the rooms are very good, very clean and the service fairly friendly. It seems a slightly more authentic experience of Death Valley than the competing Furnace Creek (we’ve never stayed there but visited twice).

The only criticism of Stovepipe Wells would be the restaurant. Last year it was excellent, even ignoring the inhospitable location. This year it was poor. The ‘all business chilli’ ordered this year and last used to be great but didn’t even include half of the ingredients listed on the menu this time and was served lukewarm (nasty). The chap we were served by was too laid back and didn’t seem very interested when some of our food order hadn’t arrived. Maybe a staffing issue on the date of our visit, or maybe they’ve let the standard drop.

Breakfast buffet was pretty good still. Be sure to fill up with fuel here - it seems to be the cheapest place in Death Valley - some other fuel stations are a complete rip off.

Room Tip: Request a newly refurbished room. Deluxe rooms include fridge and TV.

Stayed one night in a deluxe double queen room in the Roadrunner building all the way in the back of the property. Check-in was slow since one of two clerks was going out of his way to call around for rooms for some European tourists who did not have reservations. I suppose that is a plus in service for those helped but not as much for those of us waiting. It's definitely a motel but there are small touches trying make it a little more like a boutique property: small flat screens, complimentary water bottles, free Death Valley postcards and coupon for free bag of ice from General Store. Room was adequate but our room had a leaky bath tub faucet and strong mildew smell from shower curtain. Nothing terrible, but just noticeable.

The gift shop and general store had very tasteful and reasonable souvenirs considering most of the overpriced tourist trap items you usually see. Found some gorgeous amethyst and agate slice necklaces. Toll Restaurant on premises wasn't very good but hey I suppose you're lucky you can get anything to eat in the middle of the desert. Overall the location can't be beat as the mesquite sand dune and mosaic canyon are minutes away.
