My advice is to go to Tropic for your food. As I will explain, Ruby's treats like you have no other choice and you do. In half the time that we waited in line before even getting to order, we could have been seated at Clarke's or another place in Tropic, 10 miles away and would have been much happier. Suffice it to say that the Terrible rating was well deserved by Ruby's Restaurant.
While this is the 'off season', it is spring break. We arrived at 8:15 and there was a line of people waiting for the restaurant that extended back through the lobby to the general store (50-75 feet). After waiting for 10 minutes and moving 5 feet, I waited in line to get to the hotel desk for another 10 minutes to ask what the situation was (tour bus, problem in the dining room, etc). The hotel staff talked to me like I was an idiot but when I finally got an answer, she said there was just a lot of people. We waited another 20 minutes (40 in all), now 8:55 (restaurant closes at 9:30) with no explanation from anyone as to the wait. The hostesses at the restaurant were laughing, enjoying themselves and acting like there was no problem. We were furious. We checked and found that about half of the tables in the restaurant were unoccupied.
The restaurant selections were extremely limited, with perhaps 10 choices on the dinner menu. We decided to go with the buffet since we were starving and did not want to wait any longer than we already had. Finally, we got to eat. The food was very good. I know others have complained about the food, and perhaps we were just too hungry to notice, but it tasted very good to us. We also had a great waitress who was attentive to our needs and very friendly.
Upon leaving, I asked to speak to the manager. I was surprised to find that the manager was sitting at the checkout counter the whole time (I had noticed him while standing in line - he was visiting with other staff and had full view of the ridiculous line the whole time). He asked how everything was. I said that the food was good and our waitress was great, but that we were very upset about having had to wait for 40 minutes without ever being given any sort of explanation as to why. He blamed his hostesses. I asked why half of the tables were empty and he said they weren't expecting so many people. I mentioned to him that it was spring break and that they should have been prepared. Now, after reading other reviews in the past week, it is clear that they have had this same complaint and obviously don't care. They are the only restaurant open in Bryce Canyon and treat their patrons like they have no other choice. Even though the food was good and the wonderful waitress did her best to make up for it, the Terrible management earned this place a Terrible rating.
