“Leisurely stroll down these historic roads”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

The park was closed while i was there due to the Government shutdown and the Carriage roads where one of the few ways you could take in some of the scenic beauty and grandeur. It's hard to imagine these being built so long ago but they offer some peace and solitude along with great natural beauty.

“A must!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2013

We rented bikes and a bike trailer and had the best time riding around. My 6 month old either slept or had a great time seeing the sites. We wish we would have planned for more than one day in Acadia. There is so much to see. Riding the carriage roads gives you a fun way to cover ground but also see up close the beauty of the park.

We rented bikes in town and then transported them via our car to the park. If you ride from the rental agency to the park ask for specific directions. Some roads are NOT bike friendly.

“Thank you, Mr. Rockefeller”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

This is philanthropy at its best. Rockefeller could have built the carriage roads and kept them for his family's use, but instead he gave them to the public along with the rest of Acadia National Park. Whether you're walking, hiking or biking (or riding in your horse-drawn carriage, as they were originally intended), they are incredible. First, they take you through some of the most beautiful natural spaces in the world. Second, the carriage roads themselves are engineering marvels. With such an extensive network of trails, there's something for everyone – whether you're going for a short stroll with young children, or out for a challenging day of mountain biking with friends. If you're in the area, time on the carriage roads is always time well spent.

“Biking through the woods”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

I was on a biking tour of Maine and we did 2 days of biking in the Carriage Roads. Beautiful the bridges are all stone, roads are well maintained for hiking and biking. If you are unable to walk they still have carriage rides which I would have loved to do too.

“Match trail to rider and take the right bike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013 via mobile

These trails are truly wonderful, but they do take a bit of planning to enjoy properly. First is to pick the right trail. If you are quite fit, do the section from intersection 12 to 10. It's a very long climb, but the views of the sound, mainland, and interior of the island are superb once you get to the top. If you are less fit, the route east of Eagle Lake to Bubble Pond is very nice and Bubble Pond is very scenic. For those who just want an easy spin, the Witch Hole area is good, although it doesn't have the dramatic views.

As for type of bike -- stay away from road bikes with skinny tires. A hybrid or cross bike with wider tires would be ideal. A full-on mountain bike will work, but is overkill on the packed cinder surface. Inexperienced riders should take it easy on the downhill, curvy sections as the cinder surface can wash out on you.

Enjoy!
