The day we arrived at our two week oceanfront rental the parks were officially closed due to the government shutdown. As you may know, well over half of Mt Desert Island is the Acadia National Park. We did our research and was able to find a road that was near one of the access point into the park, and found out that though vehicles were banned from entering, foot traffic was not! Our group had some great hikes in the now deserted park, and to our surprise the entrance to the stairway to Thunder Hole was not locked up.Very cool on the park rangers part in my opinion. We had a 'personal viewing' to the thunder without the usual crowd that is nornally there. A few boat rides on the mail boat, a plane tour of the island, more than a few lobsters and some get reds (wine)... and voila... a great time was had by all!
