“WOW... the Homestead was awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

We spent a weekend at the Homestead with our family of 6, another family of 5 and a couple of 2.. total of 13. We had an incredible time. Outstanding quality and well worth a visit. Excellent rangers who had a wealth of knowledge. Food absolutely outstanding as well as the service and everything else. We saw everything we could hope to see... out of the Big 5 we saw 4 (hey leopards are impossible to find) Thank you Kariega for an outstanding experience!

We stayed 4 nights in the wonderful River Lodge, a relaxed place at the riverside. The cottage was spacious and comfy. Every now and then we had a curious mongoose checking in and out. Staff was more then friendly and our ranger Zolani gave us the best wildlife encounters we could imagine.
I don't know how he did it, but we saw lions with their three cubs, playing, drinking, walking. We saw playful elephants just in front of our jeep, saw a whole elephant herd passing by, we saw a black rhino, white rhino with her calf, every game drive was a treat! A cherry on the cake was the up & close encounter with Kariega's famous rhino Thandi, who survived thanks to the great efforts of rangers, owners and vets, a severe poaching attack. To see her approaching our vehicle so close, made me emotional.
The evening dinners were great also because of our nice company. A nice extra was the boat trip to the beach of Kenton-on-Sea.
Of all private game reserves we saw, Kariega for me is top! This visit will stay with me for a long time!

Room Tip: I prefer the cottages close to the main lodge. And prefer cottages to the rooms.

Fantastic trip to Kariega, we were 2 couples in a chalet in the Main Lodge, we had our own pool with fantastic views over the valley and monkeys playingin the trees whilst! The game viewing was fabulous and our ranger was not only knowledgeable but great fun too! The staff, food and atmosphere at Kariega were all fantastic. Great trip, thank you!

We spent 3 nights at Kariega on our Familymoon (honeymoon with our 12 year old joining us)
It was a great 3 days, we wouldn't change a thing.
The accomodation was great, we had a quiet chalet in the hillside, large decking area outside with a small private splash pool. Excellent view! We were full board, and were really impressed with the food/drink, something for everyone!
Our ranger (Clio) took us out on 6 drives over the course of our stay and he made our trip. He was so enthusiastic, full of knowledge and friendly. We saw so many animals and learnt so much. We have so many photos!
5 out of 5 stars is not enough for Kariega ! Hope to visit you again

Room Tip: Make sure you get a chalet with a Splash Pool, not all have them!

We came here three years ago, and although some elements (but very few) have become a little in need of repair and renovation, some areas are improved (particularly the food). The rooms are luxurious and service is tremendous. The rangers really look after you and work hard to put you in a great position for your photographs. We were in the river lodge which offers a trip to the beach on a speedboat in place of a game drive and those that took the trip clearly loved it. Room 7 (zebra) fronts on to the river and is very close to the main facility while a few of the rooms are quite a distance from the hub.

We are so glad that we could welcome you back to Kariega and that you had a great stay! Thank you for posting your review of River Lodge. We just completed an upgrade of the main areas so are concerned that you noticed some areas that need repair. Please can you email our General Manager with any specific areas and we would very much like to take care of these. Alan's email is alan@kariega.co.za. We are very glad that you enjoyed the food, your ranger and the service.
Thank you so much for taking the time to add your review and please come and visit us in our new tented camp once it is ready!
Kind regards,
Bronwen and the Kariega team.

We stayed at Kariega Game Reserve at the end of January 2014 for 4 nights at number 7 Ukhozi Lodge. Very clean and spacious, totally open plan except for the toilet.
Magnificent views and breathtaking sunsets from our balcony. We were even lucky enough to have the resident giraffe peering through our window. We had 2 game drives a day 6am and 4pm each lasting around 3 hours. Our ranger Chelee looked after us very well, making sure we got to see all of the animals and provided us with drinks and snacks. Coming face to face with a herd of elephants was truly amazing, as was being thrown around the back of the off roader!! I`m so glad we stayed for 4 days, people who went for only 2 days missed so much, like the trip to the wilderness and seeing the hippo up close. One day we didn`t see much at all, so if you`de gone for the day it would`ve been dissapointing. In between the game drives, after a fantastic breakfast of eggs benedict, we`de chill by the pool or take a stroll to the gift shop until a mouth watering lunch. You may even get to see the monkeys playing hide and seek if you`re lucky. Dinner was after the afternoon game drive about 8pm with a different aperitif each night. The food was out of this world, cooked to perfection and very plentiful. A big thank you to the chef for doing such a good job. However, some African music playing in the background while eating would`ve been a bonus. All in all, an experience of a lifetime, The only downside was..... we had to leave.

Thank you so much for your review and we are so glad that you had a great time at Ukhozi Lodge. We think that four days is also a great length to visit - we're so glad you got to experience so much of the beautiful wildlife and African bush during your trip. Great suggestion regarding music in the evening. I've passed it onto our lodge management and hope that it can be implemented soon. Thanks again for taking the time to post your review and we hope that we might be able to welcome you back at Kariega (maybe in our new tented camp) again in the future.
Kind regards,
Bronwen & the Kariega team
