“A Little Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Very small with limited opening hours but well worth the effort to book a meal. We had lunch today and the menu is very limited but that is the best part, because you know that the ingredients are fresh and in season. Very attentive table service and excellent tasty food all done by a hard working staff of three.
The restaurant is in the village of Stanley, Perthshire a little off the beaten track but well worth seeking out. It is the first time we have dined here but we will be back as it is a wonderful meal.

“Another good meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

This is our second visit to The Apron Stage and certainly not our last.
The restaurant is obviously very popular with locals and booking is necessary especially at weekend.
Food is of a good standard and the service is friendly and efficient.
Will return again

“Souperb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

The Apron Stage is so tiny that it is almost like dining in a private house - except unfortunately your hosts don't have time to eat with you and discuss the meal. Jane, Shona and Tony welcome you like long lost friends as soon as you arrive, you are shown to one of no more than six tables (if you are lucky with your seat, you can watch the experts at work in the tiny kitchen) and very soon Jane presents and describes the amuse-bouches (on this occasion mini sun-dried tomato palmiers) along with the menu and wine list. The menu is limited, three starters, two mains and two puddings or cheese. The wine list is also limited, but remarkably varied for its size.
I chose beetroot, apple and horshradish soup for starters. It was the smoothest, thickest, most flavourful soup I have had in a long time, dark crimson with a splash of white cream, no horseradish "kick", and served at exactly the right temperature in a cast-iron mini-tureen. An ideal dish for a miserable early autumn evening. Madame had seafood linguini, which she enjoyed. (I am very fussy about fish).
My main course was breast of chicken stuffed with red onion marmalade, on a bed of wilted spinach with a red wine jus, with carrots and rosti. As well as the stuffing, the chicken was wrapped in just enough smokey pancetta to dispell any blandness, the carrots tasted so fresh they could still have been in the garden that afternoon, and the rosti was cooked to perfection, with a good crispy outer. All was well set off by the jus-soaked spinach. Mme's choice was seafood casserole, which I am informed comprised at least six different types of fish, etc, certainly looked very apetising.
Choice of desert was difficult, tiramisu or raspberry
In the best possible way, The Apron Stage is not for everyday - not because of the cost, which is remarkably reasonable given the excellent food, particularly when you start to imagine the time taken in the preparation, and the discreet but attentive service, but because it would be very difficult to find anywhere better for really special. A truly special place for any occasion, though.

“Friendly Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Apron Stage a few weeks ago and we are still talking about it! It is a little gem of a place. Everything about it - from the decor to the background music to the food - is deceptively simple in its elegance. You have to be very good indeed to produce quality like this and they are very good at the Apron Stage.

“Superb cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

A very small and cosy restaurant, with a wonderful ambience and while there is not an extensive choice on the menu, each course was freshly cooked and absolutely superb. This was without a doubt the best meal out we have had in a very long time. The soup was home made with wonderful parmesan and garlic croutons and the main course duck dish was cooked to perfection with tiny, crisp roasted potatoes that were the nicest I have ever tasted anywhere. After the generous portions of starter and main course we were too full to tackle the sweet menu. There was a good choice of reasonably priced wines and given the standard of cooking and quality of the ingredients, this was really excellent value for money. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to the most critical of diners and am just sorry that it is not nearer home or we would definitely be regular visitors.
