My birthday treat, a visit to What's Cooking (well I was one of their biggest fans, having been a regular since the early 80's)
Booked on-line fine, asked for a booth fine, got it. But it all went down hill fast from there.
Our booth was right by the children's play room, I will say that again for you, children's play room. Now I thought this was a restaurant not an unsupervised children's play area, if I wanted to eat by the spoilt brats of Heswall I would take a picnic to the park on Brimstage Road. Not only did they scream the place down, they ran up and down constantly (surely a health and safety issue here and I know thinking about contacting the council to check) Should of left there and then, but no stupidly stayed but asked to move to another booth, which fair to say the manager did.
Ordered the food, starters which arrived quickly, but small portions which to be honest tasted fine (ribs and garlic prawns if you are interested) Let's move on to main course then, Burgers and a chicken sandwich thing all with fries but not a hint of side salad or dressing up which good chefs tend to do now a days. But what do we eat with our hands? Better ask for cutlery then, oh thanks a fork each er any chance of a knife. Now the food is really heading down hill, overpriced and boring is a compliment.
So got that out of the way, we now a 12 strong bunch of rugby type blokes shouting and swearing nice. Dessert just saved the day, hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream.
Now thank goodness we had taken advantage of a 50% off deal, which to be honest brings the prices into line with food served, if we had paid full price then it would of been a complete rip off.
Staff really tried but young girls who smile, but seem like they have never eaten in a restaurant and so do not know what is actually required is not a winning formula. A menu which is 25 years old and should be good, but is dished out with cheapest ingredients is also a non starter.
Whats Cooking is trying to copy the likes of Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood, so for goodness sake go and try these restaurants and see where you are going wrong. Then close down for a week, redecorate, give the place a good scrub and serve presentable good food. I may come back then (but to be honest you don't seem to care as long as the Heswall public keep paying)
Finally if you are reading this Lee Brennan, please come back What's Cooking desperately needs you.
