“Second wonderful stay. Highly recommended.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We stayed here for two nights in April.
The Bark House is in an excellent location just outside Bampton. It is in an ideal position for exploring the beautiful Exmoor countryside on foot, or cycle, and is also within driving distance of the North Devon coast.
The Bark House is a really attractive building, with the advantage of being fully refurbished downstairs after terrible flooding at Christmas (at least some good came of a terrible situation).
We were met at the car by Martin, who took our bags to our room. Double bedroom with ensuite shower room - very clean, nice room.
We were served tea and homemade biscuits in the lounge which was a very nice touch.
Friday evening we ate at the hotel. I would highly recommend the evening meal. You do need to book in advance as Martin gets all the food in fresh (which shows). I have to say that we both felt it was the best meal out we had eaten in a very long time - perfectly cooked and presented with wonderful flavours - couldn't fault any of it.
The breakfasts too were excellent - plenty of cereal/yoghurts/fresh fruit, and a beautifully cooked breakfast of your choice.
This hotel really does tick all the boxes - Martin and Mel are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, it has a lovely atmosphere with an open lounge where you can meet other guests and superb food. Add this to a stunning location in the heart of Devon and you can see why this is our second visit!
Really would highly recommend this hotel if you are thinking of taking a trip to Devon.

We have stayed before for a weekend break, but, to partly celebrate our early retirement, this time we came for a 3 night midweek stay. Having said goodbye to a car, we put our bikes on the train at Plymouth and cycled here from Tiverton Parkway station, along quiet country lanes - took just over 1 hour of gentle cycling. We'd managed to pick a week when Mel was away, but on arrival Martin greeted us and carried our panniers up to our room (nr 1), and leaving our bikes secure and dry in a utility area, we embarked on a wonderfully relaxing stay with great food throughout. Afternoon tea and cake in front of the fire was just what was required -the same applied on each day of our stay as we explored the beautiful Exmoor countryside by bike on dry but cold days.
The three course dinner was excellent value on each night, with a different choice of menu on each day, all home cooked to perfection. The wine list was varied and sensibly priced, and Martin managed to make us feel special each day, despite a number of other guests and a party of 6 for supper on one evening.
A hearty start to each day came courtesy of a choice of fresh fruit, cereals and cooked breakfast, and this meant we could cycle all day with only a coffee stop during our travels. Travelling by bike was very enjoyable, and having done other cycling holidays over a longer period, The Bark House was up there with the best in terms of hospitality, quality of food and value for money.
We can't wait to find another excuse to come and stay in 2013 - by bike of course !

We and two friends have just spent another great few days with Mel and Martin at the Bark House. As usual the welcome, the room ( No.1 ) and the food were second to none.Add to this the after dinner chats with other guests in the comfortable lounge and the friendliness of our hosts and you have the makings of a really lovely hotel that we would all thoroughly recommend.

Many thanks again to Martin and Mel and we wish them great things for the future.

Room Tip: Best two rooms are 1 and 6

Our first impression wasn't the absolute apex - worn carpets, dated furniture and a lounge that smelt of heavily of sewage (no, it really did...but the smell subsided after a while).

BUT, Martin and Melanie couldn't have been nicer, their breakfast is one of the finest we have had in ANY hotel (Mayfair included) - all freshly cooked and using local ingredients - and we genuinely enjoyed our few days at Bark House. The rooms and dining room were spotless and the outlook across the river Exe is outstanding.

All in all, a contradictory but pleasant experience!

I stayed at The Bark House Hotel in September 2012. The welcoming atmosphere made me instantly feel at home and comfortable enough to wander round in my slippers! My room was reasonably large, however the furniture was rather shabby, the lightshade disgusting with dead flies stuck in it and the window cracked. Complimentary tea and coffee and biscuits were provided. I didn't want full dinner, so had a yummy bowl of homemade soup with a ham and mustard sandwich, lemon cake and hot chocolate served to me on a tray in the sitting room which was very homely with the fire crackling. The next morning breakfast in the dining room was fab. There is provision to settle your account by credit or debit card.

Because of the shabbiness of the room I felt it was overpriced and have dropped my overall rating accordingly - I would rate it as more like a 2 star hotel. But I could not fault the genuine welcome.

We had the great good fortune to stay 6 nights at Bark House during a tour of Devon and Somerset. The inn was arranged by our tour operator, Adderley Travel; they know a good thing when they see it!

The Inn is situated roadside in the Exe Valley, with a nice view of ridges overlooking the Exe River and near the charming village of Oakfordbridge...an easy walk down the road. The location is great for day trips to Exmoor, Dartmoor, and the charming gardens, market towns, and villages that dot this part of Britain.

Martin and Melanie, the owners, are delightful hosts. The highlights of the stay were the fabulous breakfasts and dinners prepared by Martin...they were by far the best we had during this part of our trip. He uses locally sourced ingredients and has a definite artist's touch! Of note, if you are driving in the area and don't need to a place to stay, the restaurant is open for tea, dinner, and Sunday lunch; it would be worth a stop!

Our room was at the end of an upstairs hall and is shown in the traveler's photos already posted (curved windows with window seat). If was clean and comfy, but we do concur with the "shabby chic" characterization. The bathroom was large and clean with a good shower and nice, thick towels.

We highly recommend The Bark House and would be more than happy to visit again if we travel to this delightful part of the world!

Just had our third visit to the Bark House over several years as we have relatives in the area.
We like single beds and so do not take the best room in the house - there is a small shower and loo room and a washbasin in the bedroom. However the beds are superbly comfortable and the breakfasts and dinners to die for! Martin and Melanie are superb hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. We have stayed in many superior hotels that are well below the Bark House standard

Room Tip: There is only one room with single beds but we have looked into the rest and they look excellent wit...
