As we came through the gate and descended the few steps down into the Gardens of Irini - having been met on our steep climb up the hill by the wonderful Deirdre - I was sure I'd died and gone to heaven. Tucked away at the top of Bellapais village, Deirdre has created a tranquil living space unlike anywhere else I've been. Dappled sunshine on tables and chairs, colourful cushions and plants, fountains and trees. There are two cottages for rent - we took the Studio (her mother's former art studio), which was simply and well furnished, clean and comfortable, with en suite bathroom and kitchen, and decorated with her mother's paintings on the walls. With our own seating area, it was totally peaceful, unhurried, beautiful. We were self catering, but Deirdre offers candle-lit dinners for a few lucky visitors (capacity maximum around 10) and we had two delicious evening meals in her bistro (Guthrie's). Deirdre was always generous with her advice and help (our first time in North Cyprus) guiding us to walks, sights, villages, and ensured we got the most from our week. We also fell in love with her beautiful cats! From the Gardens you can walk up into the hills and be away from everything, or down into the village to enjoy the more lively atmosphere in one of the cafes or restaurants by/near magnificent Bellapais Abbey. We had to be wrenched away; warmly recommended for anyone wanting a special experience.
