“Spacious, well-equipped property in great location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011 for a stay in October 2011

We (3 families with a total of 6 children ranging from 14-10yrs plus dog) hugely enjoyed our stay at The Jovial Dutchman. The property looks a bit austere from outside but is really homely inside with masses of space and quality fixtures & fittings. The kitchen is especially well-equipped and the main bathroom is huge. It was great for the kids to have a whole (ex)pub garden to themselves and there are really thoughtful touches like a rope swing, den, BBQ area & fire-pit to add to the outdoor fun. The pub-style games room was well-used and it was great to have a dining area that allowed all 12 of us to eat comfortably at the same table. There are friendly pubs, a nice butchers, bakers & handy 'late shop' (open 7 days) within walking distance so any shortages could be easily remedied. Plenty to do in a short distance by car as well as lovely walks from the doorstep. Those who stayed in the bedrooms nearest the road junction did say the traffic disturbed them at times but this is really the only minus point we could think of. It would also have been good to have some info on the history of the pub, old photos, original layout, etc as it has such a nice feel that it leaves you wanting to know more! Certainly one of the best properties for 12 that we have found to date.

This is all very pleasing - and I wonder what I would have needed to do to receive 5 stars....

“perfect place for friends to get together”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2011 for a stay in October 2011

Absolutely fabulous weekend away with a group of friends. The Jovial Dutchman provides super accommodation for large groups of friends or families to either celebrate or simply relax and catch up with each other. Beautifully converted and very well equiped. Brilliant location in the village with lots to do round about. We all said we would be returning with families in the future.

“Fantastic accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

We were a family group of 11 ranging from 19 years to 81 years plus Revel, our chocolate labrador.

The Jovial Dutchman was refurbished approximately 18 months ago, I believe, and it has been completed to the highest standard - a great combination of beautiful old features combined with modern convenience. Look out for the smallest additions, like the "JD" carved into the bedroom furniture - fantastic attention to detail.

The kitchen is very well equipped, everything we needed was there. The table was big enough for all of our party to dine around in comfort, and transformed into a great card table in the evening. There is a pool table/table tennis table and the addition of the sauna to soothe aching muscles at the end of the day is a real luxury. The beds were some of the most comfortable we have ever slept in and the towels were soft and fluffy - maybe just a little undersized for some of our more ample family members!

The garden was great for the dog to wander around - although with her being just six months and not fully grown, we did have some concern over whether she would be able to get under the gate on the driveway - something to bear in mind if you do take smaller dogs.

The JD is in a great location - walking distance of the supermarket and the Black Swan pub, which did good food and had very friendly staff. Some members of our party also went to the Cliff Inn but preferred the Black Swan. There are plenty of walks around Crich itself and you are very close to Matlock Bath and Matlock.

We drove the car to Whatstandwell, parked and followed the canal path through to Matlock Bath. We then continued on to Matlock and took the steam train through to Rowsley and back. If your timing is right, you can get off the steam train at Matlock and catch a normal train back to Whatstandwell to pick up your vehicle.

All in all, we would highly recommend the area and in particular the Jovial Dutchman as a great place for a large family group - go along and enjoy!

“excellent facilities for families”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2011 for a stay in September 2010

We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay: the oldies enjoyed the comforts of the living room, and the youngsters the space outside and all the games, the ones in the middle were happy with the sauna. Easy access to walking and other places to visit. Well equipped, smart and tidy with loads of space for wet walking boots! Comfortable beds and a great nights sleep!!

“Unmissable property, unbeatable location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2011 for a stay in May 2011

The Jovial is a truly unique and beautiful property, looks as though it has very recently been renovated, and this has been done to an exceptionally high standard. We loved the way it mixes old with new, such as the beautiful new kitchen with what looks like original old benches from its days as a pub in the games room (complete with pool table). This house was perfectly suited for our large group of eight adults, four children, a baby in a cot and even the family dog! We were really impressed with the area, too, as there is so much beautiful countryside to explore right on the doorstep. Crich itself has a surprisingly good number of shops (great bakery, great butchers) which made staying there even nicer. Recommend grilling sausages from the butcher's on the bbq in the garden and sitting out on the patio (a real sun trap). We will definitely be back.
