“Great little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2012

We recently spent 4 nights at the laxnes hotel and had a great time. The staff we very pleasant and more than happy to give you any information you needed, We emailed before our stay and asked if it was possible to have a mountain view and also cheekily asked if we could loan a kettle. We had a reply back straight away to tell us that they had reserved us a good room. When we arrived we were not disappointed- our room overlooked the beautiful mountains (the scenery changed daily with the weather) and we also found a kettle on our arrival. Breakfast was adequate and a good start to the day. The hotel is very close to a garage, supermarket and a KFC. We were glad we stayed here instead of Reykjavik which is only a short bus ride away. We would recommend this hotel. Lovely and quiet with beautiful views.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view you wont be disappointed !!

We have recently come back from staying at this hotel. Rooms are pleasant and it is actually more of a motel. Breakfast is 730-10, but has a nice choice of food from cereals, to hams, toast and waffles. It is a good 20mins bus journey from the City but there is a bus stop nearby. Very helpful in the reception, no food served in the evenings but plenty of eateries close by, however the best is a 10 minute walk to the local bistro with lovely food. We would stay here again.

This is one of the nicest places I've ever stayed. Although situated outside of Reykjavik the hotel has lovely views of the mountains and from the hotel there are some great walks. Our room had a gorgeous view (with a window that opened out into a balcony), was very spacious and was warm and quiet. The wifi connection in the room was quite fast and it had the added advantage of having a bath with a seemingly endless supply of hot water.

The reception staff went out of their way to be helpful and gave us several good recommendations. They also organised car hire at a good rate.

We used the bus service for the first few days. The number 15 bus goes pretty much right outside the hotel every half hour or so and its a 25 minute journey into the city centre so it's not too much trouble. We found that a couple of the tours wouldn't pick up from the hotel as it was too far out and we had to make our way into town for the pick up, but there were tours that did pick up from the hotel.

There is a very warm, friendly feeling about this hotel (and its staff) that we didn't experience when we stayed in the city. It has a free pool table and sofas to sit on in the reception/bar area and it is a good place to chat with other guests.

We were lucky enough to see the northern lights from the hotel one of the nights we stayed. This was surprising as the northern lights tours hadn't gone out that evening as they didn't think they would see anything!

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, it is a fantasic little base for exploring a beautiful country.

Room Tip: You need to request a room with a mountain view.

Shaun was fantastic. Really helped us out with trips and local information. Hotel was great value and very friendly. Breakfasts really good buffet style. Limited food on offer in the evening but well stocked bar and big screen for films. Only 20 minutes or so by bus to Reykyavic - couldn't be easier - better value to buy a day pass though.

We stayed in the Laxnes at the end of January 12 for 1 week, we stayed in one of the suites which was excellent and roomy, nice corner suite to chill out on after a long day out or a late night mission in search of the Aurora.

The rooms have free wireless which is pretty important when you want to gloat with pictures to friends on social networks.

Staff are excellent with much praise going to Shaun the hotel manager who seems to becoming a celebrity if you read most reviews here, the reviews however are not unfounded.
He will do his best to help you out regardless of what you ask, help with all kinds of information.
We like to find our own way but even him checking what roads where open or safe to drive on (Heavy Snow) was very welcomed.
Breakfast is buffet style with breads-cereal-eggs-meat-chesses-pancakes etc which does the job.
Hotel location is about a 10-15 minute drive to the centre of Reykjavik by car or 45 minute drive from Keflavik Airport, its placed just of the main ring road route 1 which makes it a doddle getting about, there is also a bus stop right outside which we never used but seemed pretty frequent, even with the snow.

I recommend hiring a car, you get to move at your own pace with the company you choose, Icelandic drivers are very patient and courteous they will move over when they see you coming onto main roads from slipways, they're also not the type to beep their horns if you're not going at speeds they are accustomed too, they'll just wait until its safe to overtake.

Northern Lights:

We were lucky enough to experience 4 nights with the Aurora, 1 particular spectacular night started at 8pm right at the back at the hotel (Tours don't set off till 9pm) and proceeded to fill the sky with dancing lights till 2am eventually spanning the whole sky over the hotel.

We loved Iceland and this hotel and I will go back to both, I can't give a higher recommendation than that.

I stayed at Hotel Laxnes for four nights at the end of January 2012. Although the weather was terrible, the staff were really helpful and did their best to make sure we made the most out of trip to Iceland. Our room was cosy and warm and had a lovely view of the mountains. Self service breakfast was fine.

A big snow downfall during the night previous to our departure meant we were delayed by several hours, and meant I had to arrange a last minute airport transfer to the hotel whilst awaiting for our delayed flight at Gatwick airport. Hotel Laxnes answered my emails really quickly and arranged a pick up without a problem, and then gave us a warm welcome.

The only thing to be aware of is that Hotel Laxnes is a bus trip away from Reykjavik. This wasn't an issue for us, and the tours we arranged were happy to pick us up from Hotel Laxnes, and it was nice having a view of the mountains. It did mean that there were limited options for restaurants compared to downtown Reykjavik. We went to the nearby recommended restaurant, and also could have saved some money by using our room's cooking facilities - so wasn't a problem for us.

Prior to going to Iceland, we had arranged several daytrips independently. In retrospect, this could have been done just in Iceland through the hotel, and then taken into account the weather. Although the tours we had arranged and went on (Snaefellsnes and Golden Circle) were amazing. We had hoped to see the Northern Lights during our stay in Iceland, and the staff made sure we were advised each day whether there would be trips to try and see them so could easily arrange one with them when a trip did take place. Although we didn't really see them unfortunately!

Definitely hope to go back to Iceland again and Hotel Laxnes!

My friend and I stayed at Hotel Laxnes for 3 nights at the end of January: we had dreadful weather unfortunately but really enjoyed our stay in Mosfellsbaer/Reykjavik. Staff and especially Shaun were so friendly and helpful; they couldn't do enough to help us. The hotel was clean and modern, and we were given a suite with a balcony for our last two nights. Breakfast was adequate. We would definitely go back though it will take a while to get over our disappointment at missing the Northern Lights yet again!

Room Tip: Try to get a balcony looking out towards the mountain...
