“Extreamley nice stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2014

My wife and I stayed here the 20th & 21st and left the morning of the 22sd March 2014. Apparently the proprietors, Laura & Mark, have evenings with entertainment and a meal, we booked the "Magic evening" for the evening of the 20th which consisted of a very good two course meal and a very entertaining chap named Stanton, I think..sorry! He was good making the night really entertaining. Our room was named "Jake" which due to being in the eves made it unsuitable for tall people, however I'm not tall! If you look at the cost of the room in isolation I think most would say it was a little overpriced, but read on. The staff are absolutely superb and very helpful particularly Jenny which should not be read as saying the others where not as good. The food was good and reasonably priced as was the house wine and the guest bitter which I tried was nice. Unfortunately on both mornings the breakfast was too much for my wife and I, and extremely well cooked so Mark don't change the breakfast! Looking at the two nights as a whole our two day break was worth every penny and I would recommend the Tollgate Inn to anybody, two miles from Bradford on Avon and around seven miles from Bath, on Jenny's advice we left our car in Bradford on Avon' station car park and took the train into Bath. One negative comment, the outside staircase leading up to the rooms should have more lighting, and if possible some covering, an infirm or older person could find the staircase a challenge in bad weather or dark nights. Although having said that Jenny was more than pleased to unlock a door to allow us up an internal staircase when asked.

Room Tip: If your tall don't have room Jake

The place was packed but not a long wait for service. Beef was excellent, very good quality and plenty of it. Our daughter loved the Chicken and son really enjoyed the burger.
Assorted veg and roast potatoes very good. Vanilla creme brûlée and ice cream rounded off the meal nicely. Would recommend and booking is essential

Very comfortable country pub and hotel offering excellent food and accommodation at good value prices. Stayed 2 nights in imaginatively furnished but comfortable bedroom which included fresh milk for tea and coffee. Excellent dinner and breakfasts with much locally sourced food.

Room Tip: Check on room head height as some have low ceilings.

Very friendly greeting on arrival by Laura, who showed us to our room. The room Was lovely, very cosy with some nice features. There was free water, filter coffee, fresh milk, and fresh fruit in our room which is a nice touch. We had a lovely evening meal. The breakfast was amazing, good quality local produce cooked to perfection. All in all a very enjoyable stay, in a nice, small village setting, very near to Bath and Bradford on Avon.

This hotel is situated in the village of Holt. The rooms are comfortable and homely, we stayed in 'Samantha' room. We were greeted by Laura who made us welcome. The pub restaurant had an excellent menu and wine list, we opted for the dish of the day 'loin of pork' which was cooked to perfection. The Bifferno (Italian red) and Shiraz ( South African red) did not disappoint. The hotel has a large car park so parking is not a problem. The breakfast was excellent and generous. This hotel / pub is situated near Bradford on Avon and ideal for visiting Bath. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Samantha room is the largest room in the hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights, paying £190 for bed & breakfast.

Positives
Room in good condition
Bathroom clean & worked well
Noise levels very low
Good selection of ales
Evening food was of excellent quality
Staff very pleasant & helpful

Negatives
Bathroom towels poor quality/worn
Matress & pillows lumpy/uncomfortable
Breakfast selection limited/served lukewarm

Overall
They do almost everything very well, a couple of improvements needed and it's well worth the money. To be honest, the evening food was so delicious (granted we were well lubricated) that it's almost worth it for that alone. Staff very friendly and a warm welcome. Good location to travel in to Bath etc.

Good selection of local ales on the pumps including Tribute. Opted for the Beef Wellington which was well cooked. Service was a little slow but the pub was quite busy when we dined. The pub itself is nice too - lots of well positioned tables in corners to get cosy in.
