“disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

I have plenty of negative things to say about this hotel. Staying 4 days was truly disappointing. First they did not have our plunge pool and wanted to compensate with a free dinner instead. when we went for dinner they had removed the "expensive" items lobsters and fish saying they were finished. They didnt even have black forest cake. the beach is gated! so you would have to walk to the end of the hotel to get to the beach. The next day we ordered food to our room. after waiting for 1 hour we called to check back, the guy on the other end said we did not give him our room number so he could not deliver it! on our last day, they charged us extra for food and didnt know where the extra bill came from when it was clearly not our signature on the receipt. Breakfast was also very poor for a 4 star!!!! We eventually got our plunge pool on the second day! Overall there is nothing to do withing the hotel and vicinity.

Good place to stay. Rooms and suits are spacious, tidy and clean. Friendly staff with a Good manager. Our room was upgraded to a nice suite.A surprise candle light dinner was arranged for us. Tasty food though the variety is limited. Easy access to the beach. Recommend for a peaceful stay.

When paying premium rates you have a high expectation of the hotel. The hotel website is a really good marketing gimmic it does not give the reality of the hotel which is not premium hotel, where value for money is not achieved.

• The first impression of the property was poor. Looked very small.

• The service levels really need improving.

• The advertised spa really doesn't look appealing.

• Food was a simple buffet that was nothing speacial at all. And similar to the type available at cheaper hotels.

• Stayed in a deluxe suite which was quite good. One good thing is the size of the rooms.

My honest suggestion is either they seriously reduce their prices and run the place like a run of the mill hotel or considerbely increase service levels to match price at the moment by giving the guest some thing more than they could get down the road in a less expensive property.

We stayed in the Mandara Resort over a year ago, and we still talk about it, eventhough we also stayed at other nice places in Sri Lanka. This was the best. Not so much because of the hotel, which in itself was fantastic, with great views, a lovely pool, and practically on the beach, but because of the service. As we walked down to breakfast, the maitre d would ask us what we wanted for breakfast, before we even sat down. Anything we requested, he would make. In the evening the same, and we could sit where we wanted, so our table was placed by the beach, at least 15 metres from the next table. It was so romantic. The manager is friendly and helpful, and that is reflected in his staff. Highly recommended!

Loved this hotel - our room was upgraded to the most stunning apartment sized room. The bathroom was clean and modern with polished concrete + metal features. The bed was nice, aircon worked + view was stunning out to the sea. The beach was a bit muddy due to heavy rains + it is right near the river. The pool was great though + the fence is not a big deal - barely noticed it!

This was our second time at this beautiful boutique hotel. The front desk staff was lovely and check in was very fast. The room and the bathroom was even bigger than we remembered, and everything, the showers, the jacuzzi, the sofa and the flat screen in your room, was looking really brand new.
The beach in front of the hotel is very clean but the water is not. Luckily a short tuk tuk ride and you are at the wonderful Mirissa beach at Giragala.
We stayed here for three nights and it was a wonderful stay except for a couple of negative points:
- We were staying half board, and everything was great, including the restaurant staff and the food was lovely, but all three nights the dinner menu was western food only, No Sri Lankan food at all which was a bit disappointing :(
- on our last night we warned the front desk staff that we had an early morning check out, but the next morning we were delayed over 30mins because the front desk staff couldn't get hold of whoever was responsible for printing the final bill, this was quite annoying.

May be we were lucky reading other reviews. Unfortunately we were only there for one night in this wonderful hotel. But the location and the complexes are really great! We would love to have stayed longer! The staff were very, very friendly. From this hotel from trips in the Whale watching very recommendable!
