Generally this area is for kite surfers and those who want somewhere remote and peaceful. If this is you then you should love this place. If not you may well be disappointed. Kalpitiya is 40km off the highway with only one road in and out. We were travelling as a family of four with our own car so no real problem (if you overlook the shocking standard of the road for the last 30km). If you're relying on bus / tuktuk this will be a long arduous trek. Resort is almost impossible to find even with a map so easiest option is to go to town and pay a tuktuk driver 100 rupee and get him to lead the way. Resort is perfectly located on side of lagoon. It only has 7 or 8 rooms. As a family we took two of the modern rooms as they were more comfortable after considering the traditional cabana - but beware it has little privacy or security but offers something more memorable. We paid 15000 rupee for 2 rooms for 2 nights incl. breakfast which is probably the cheapest you will find in this area. Views of lagoon and ocean from the balcony were fantastic and the lack of tourists added to a real feeling of tranquility and paradise. Also watching the kitesurfers is entertaining. Resort has a couple of kayaks you can use on the lagoon free of charge. For food the couple running the place are happy to cook meals. We had seafood and noodles one night and the full monty curry the next. They were really friendly and helpful especially considering their limited english. They gave the children presents from the lagoon when we left. Resort is a few km from town so once you're here options are limited. Town is interesting for a few hours - lots of little shops; although exceedingly basic on facilities and hygiene but not geared in any way for tourists so don't expect to find any restaurants etc. We stayed here for a couple of nights at the start of our trip to chill out and acclimatise and loved our stay after the first hour. We had reserved (but not paid for the cabana) which was a waste of time as the emails were with the owner who had clearly not passed on the info. to the manager and the cabana only sleeps 3 not 4 as advertised unless the 4th person sleeps on the stone floor. After some lengthy discussion with the owner (using their mobile not mine) we negotiated (demanded) the family rooms at the same price we would have paid for the cabana. But that wasn't too unusual as we found Sri Lanka, as expected, to be a bit disorganised and people on the ground not allowed to make decisions because the boss had to okay everything. No electricity during the day but you don't really need it if you're here to take advantage of the surroundings. Overall - a yes if you're feeling adventurous.
