“Good base for a couple of days”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

We also had a KGB deal but paid extra for an upgraded room with a four poster bed. We didn't see the other rooms but our room was very nice, large comfortable bed, spacious room, flat-screen TV, tea making facilities, lovely bathroom, huge bath with masses of very hot water! We ate in the restaurant the first night and it was good. Breakfast was very good - personally I would have liked some fruit as well. There seemed to be a few problems in the kitchen on the last morning for breakfast which resulted in a delay but I'm sure this was a one off - no complaints and easy access to York and Thirsk

Booked 2 nights with a bottle of wine on a KGB deal for £79. Arrived early and room was ready so that was lovely. The room had a fabulous big bed, flat screen tv & tea making facilities. We had a drink in the bar that we felt was a bit pricey, nearly £5 for a glass of wine but taking into account overall cost of stay, I understand they've got to make profit somewhere.

Breakfast was tremendous! Cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit etc. I had the full English, produce was lovely & not at all greasy. My husband had smoked haddock with poached eggs which he said was delicious. The manager was really nice, took an interest in what you were doing & was happy to make suggestions on what to do in the area etc. there is a bus stop straight outside that goes to York every hour. Return ticket was approx £5 and last bus back is at 7pm. I think a taxi is approx £18.

I think the place would benefit from a bit of a face lift in some areas but for £79 you could not be robbed! We would have no hesitation in booking this again if the deal was on. Lovely location, near enough to York, lovely staff & a fabulous breakfast to start the day!

We bought the KGB offer for 2 nights and we were very pleased.
We had room 6 which was comfortable, clean and adaquetly furnished.
The only comment I would make with the bathroom is it would have been better to have a hook on the wall for the shower and a shower curtain around the bath.
We ate in the restaurant both nights and could not fault the food.
All the staff were friendly and very helpful with information on the area.
Located in a lovely village where we caught the bus into York.
I see some reviews said it was noisy at the front of the hotel but we didn't find that.

we stayed here on a kgb deal. The room (no 1) was lovely and comfortable. Very large bathroom with bidet. As we are not as agile as we used to be we found the bath to be very high and deep. The shower was an attachment on the taps. the cold water was a little temperamental on the basin. Very comfortable bed. The breakfast was very well cooked with a varied menu. The staff were helpful and friendly. We ate both nights of our stay in the 'pub'. The menu was acceptable but don't eat here if you are in a rush as it takes some time for the food to appear. When it does it is ok. Lovely village location.

We stayed at the Blackwell Ox Inn for the weekend. Like others, upon arrival no-one was around to check us in, however, eventually the chef appeared and showed us to our room. The bar was not open during the day and there is little sign of life to welcome any visitors that may be passing. The room was clean and the breakfast was of a good quality, the staff were friendly enough when the place was open! we ended up taking our custom to the nearby Rose & Crown which was excellent and whose staff were extremely freindly.

We stayed at the Inn on 12 July for 2 nights and had a lovely time. The room was clean and warm with a comfortable bed. We did nt notice traffic noise as we were at the back of the hotel. The shower over the bath could have done with a rail and shower curtain to hold it up as we had to sit in the bath to have a shower. The staff were friendly and the cooked breakfast was good. The area is beautiful and a great place to use as a base. We would visit again and recommend the Inn.

Room Tip: twin bed in room at the back was very quiet

This was a KGB deal and was set in beautiful countryside.

Room was nice and comfortable with a great king-sized bed. Traffic a bit noisy first thing in the morning if you're on the main road side. Lovely area to go walking and a nice pub within 5-minute drive.

Breakfast was very good and staff friendly.

Would return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main road if you want a lie-in.
