“Very poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

I attended a wedding here in January and it was very clear that the hotel is only open occasionally for events. Our room was freezing and we know other guests had the same complaint. The bed linen also had a musty smell and felt a little damp. Staff at reception seemed a little overwhelmed which was strange, surely they knew that there was a wedding booked.
You will read in a lot of reviews that there is no phone signal here, and there isn't any coverage for any of the 4 Irish mobile operators, but I don’t think that this is the hotels fault. However, you can't dial externally from the room phone so you really are cut off! We couldn’t even find instruction on how to dial our friend’s room, and had to get reception to transfer us!
There is no wifi in the hotel, certainly not in the rooms, and we had no remote for our tv (we called reception to ask for one and it was never delivered). So with no phone, wifi or tv you really are cut off. Fortunately as we were at a wedding it wasn't the end of the world. The rooms and bathrooms are big but quite stark and lack atmosphere and cosiness, and we had no toiletries in our bathroom. I also received a very abrupt "no" when I phoned to ask if the hotel provided bath robes.
The food in the hotel was ok, the wedding reception was in Balyna House and what we ate for dinner was nicely presented but unfortunately wasn’t hot and there was no service during dinner to mention this to staff. Balyna House itself looks very nice but unfortunately it was very cold, with most guests leaving jackets and coats on throughout the day. There are a couple of lovely fires in Balyna House, but for some reason they weren’t lit which was a real pity, it would have made it much more comfortable.
The weather was very bad while we were here so we didn’t get to explore the grounds or play golf the next day as planned (I believe the golf course is very good and despite the weather it was quite busy), there is a very nice old chapel room on the grounds though for weddings or meetings.
A few of us wedding guests went to the main hotel bar for a while after the wedding dinner and the staff there were very nice and very friendly, a stark contrast to the rest of the staff.
I think if I was invited to an event here again, I wouldn’t stay. I would happily spend the €100 room charge on the 30min taxi journey back to Dublin!

First when I went to check-in the woman at the desk decided to answer the phone 1st and spent about 2 mins talking to housekeeping? When I got to my room it was freezing, I tried to get the heating working, without success! Rang to ask if I was doing something wrong, they sent me a plug in heater??? Pillows like a bag of sand, I like firm beds but this was way to firm for anyones liking. Got to say staff very friendly and room was clean bright with plenty of space. As I was with a group we planned to have a sandwich at lunchtime....bad decision. Pre made pre packed like you buy in petrol station when your on the road. inedible. Soup and sandwich @ €7.50. Soup / Sandwich / Tea or coffee @ €10. I love coffee and the coffee they served was from a pump flask, only warm, week and grey? €2.50 What are they thinking.
I dont know why they cant make fresh sandwiches or other options for lunch. The Hotel is lacking personality, but has potential to be great if they sharpen up there act. Location.. Its ok if your playing golf but if looking for a weekend away it's off the beaten track and so so quite
( Boring) if your looking for somewhere with atmosphere, give this place a miss.

Just back at weekend from a fantastic three days at Moyvalley. Trip companions were 19 male golfers. The course - overall layout is excellent with some very challenging par 4's when the wind is up - sunny for us but quite windy each day - great index 1 hole and 18th is an ideal risk reward hole for an exciting finish. Hotel - rooms were spacious and fitted out as you would expect for a quality hotel - beds were comfortable - check in and out was painless and efficient. Food - absolutely wonderful - chef deserves a medal for catering for our lot - given the range of palates, tastes and dietary "exceptions". But the stars of the show for us were the staff - Jo, Deirdre, Michelle and Brian were superb but Claire was in a league of her own and looked after us like family from start to finish. Our thanks to all for a great stay - we'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: All the rooms were great

Moyvalley is a beautiful hotel with a little idyllic house for a wedding. We attended the drinks reception in Ballyna house- this was lovely(however could have done with a few chairs). The courtyard was perfect for photographs.
We then returned to the hotel for the main event. Staff were very nice and friendly. Wine was plentiful and served throughout the meal. The room was quite big for the wedding guests(100) at this wedding, however it was well decorated so did not look empty.
Food was very nice and there was plenty of sides (potatoes/veg). Staff served drinks quickly and efficiently.
One major downside was the fact that the meal finished and there was then a long long wait until the band started. The main lights were on for all this time- was very bright!

Rooms were clean- basic enough. Breakfast was buffet and plentiful. Tea was self service.

A big black mark for me was the fact that there was absolutely no phone signal for Vodafone and O2 from the min we arrived until we left. This was extremely frustrating-particularly because the room phones could not ring out of the hotel directly. Reception needed to be phoned and given the number you wanted to dial- very archaic practice!!

Overall, a nice place to stay.

We attended our niece's wedding here on December 15th. The setting is amazing, Balyna house is superb in it's decor and furnishings. Oh! what a shock lay in store for us when we reached the accommodation section in the hotel itself. The corridor and bedrooms were like 'outer Siberia'. We just shivered while trying to get our heating working. All the other rooms on the corridor and even the corridor itself had no heating turned on. Even the batteries were rusty in the remote control in the TV! After some time we got the heat to work a little but then it started blowing out cold air! We went to reception to report this and about one hour later the receptionist arrived with the batteries for the TV remote, fiddled about with the heating controls and told us to keep her posted.....! No heat, but we, together with all the other rooms on the corridor were given portable heaters! One wonders how there were so many portable radiators to hand so quickly on a Saturday evening, However, we had heat! One can understand problems happening with boilers etc. but that this wasn't checked out the morning of the wedding and that all the bedrooms weren't heated in advance certainly questions management skills - who ticked the boxes to see that all was in order?? Also bearing in mind that the hotel was only opened at weekends - so one would expect that the heating would be a priority to heat beds etc. One guest did say to the receptionist that 'it wasn't as if the wedding was a surprise'! What 'took the biscuit' altogether was that one receptionist said to a family guest the next morning that there was no issue with heating and that, that story wasn't true!
On a positive note, the food, the service in the dining room for the reception were all first class - so no worries there, brides and grooms! The breakfast the following morning, on the other hand, was not in keeping with the luxury of Balyna house and estate. Other positives about the hotel were spacious reception area, lounges and plenty little 'grouped seating' areas - ideal for `mini gossip groups' or time out areas from the loud disco music in the ballroom!

So brides and grooms of 2013 ensure that the heating in the bedrooms is high up on your checklist before booking the hotel! We did our best to keep this from the bride and groom so as not to spoil their day but it was the topic on everyone's tongue and this was difficult.

We got a €10.00 discount on departure to compensate for the heating issue.

Room Tip: Check the heating first...! Our room was facing south so we had a little benefit from the heat of th...
