“Stopped in for drinks, wish we'd booked a room.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2012

We took a side trip to Las Lajas to walk the beach. I'd read about this resort on Trip Advisor and decided to check out the restaurant and to scope out a place to stay for our next trip.

The grounds were beautiful. We peeked into rooms that were being cleaned between guests and they looked comfortable and clean.

The bartender mixed up an enormous margarita and we watched the surf and observed all the relaxed guests. We headed back to the Pan American highway with a promise to come back and stay a few days.

The rooms are big and basic - ours came with queen size beds. However, your rooms are just for sleeping as the beauty of this place is its gorgeous and somewhat remote beach. If you just want to surf, sunbathe and just chill reading a good book this makes for a great stay. Nice yard/pool. The bar/restaurant is nice. Good service for dinner - somewhat marginal service for breakfast.

We stayed at the Las Lajas Beach Resort on the advice of friends who live in Panama.

The hotel has a sort of colonial look about it. Decorated outside in bright colours it is very attractive. It has a restaurant/bar, swimming pool, well tended garden mostly of mown grass and plenty of parking space. The rooms were clean and large, each with two double beds, air conditioning and an en-suite with shower. The rooms have interesting decorative murals painted on the walls. The hotel apparently has free internet access but I could not pick up a WiFi signal anywhere in the vicinity of our room.

The main feature of the hotel is its beach-side location. The beach, which stretches a long way in either direction, is of soft sand. The tidal range means that at low tide there is a short walk to the waters edge. The sea itself was very warm, more so than at Veracruz close to Panama City. It was calm and safe when we visited with no discernible current and only small waves. There are sun-loungers and chairs for relaxing on the grass and around the pool but none on the beach itself. There are comfy hammocks outside most of the rooms.

My recollection, three weeks later, is that the food in the restaurant was good value but not especially memorable. I don't think breakfast was included.

All in all a nice beachside hotel in a great location where relaxation is the order of the day

Las Lajas beach is one of the best beaches I have ever been to. That says a lot as I come from the Philippines, where there are lots of beautiful and fine beaches. The water is warm and great for swimming. The beach, being quite broad, is great for kids to play on. Sunset was absolutely beautiful. I love this place and had wished I stayed longer.

Room for improvement: Wifi coverage and speed

Room Tip: We slept close to the bar area which wasn't bad.

We spent 4 nights at this hotel for our family reunion... Very relaxing place, not crowded the food was incredible I recommend the Fish and Chips which is cod in a beer batter ... just perfect. The fish was fresh caught. We are coming back, our kids loved the place, the beach and the pool. The hotel is very well maintained. It just feels like home!

overall: amazing place to get away from it all for a couple days and relax. would highly recommend. the suite room is amazing.

the hotel has 12 standard and 2 suites (one occupied by the owner). including tax, low-season prices were $83 and $110. higher in high-season, but there are 50% discounts for retirees.

pros
-right on the beach (the beach is very empty on weekdays)
-drop-dead gorgeous views of a 20 km undeveloped beach (the beach goes out 100m at low tide, and is very safe for swimming which is rare in Panama).
-beautiful grounds. lots of space for sitting and relaxing.
-nice pool
-great restaurant (really good food, and very reasonable prices)
-the suite room has to-die-for views from your balcony hammock terrace.
-great service. friendly owner.

cons
-in the middle of nowhere. nothing of consequence nearby (restaurants, shopping, activities, attractions).
-hot water was a little touchy sometimes, but hey, it's really hot outside
