Visited years ago and this was great - good fish and chip, outlook etc. and you couldn't get a seat. Now it seems to be just a tourist trap for those passing through and busloads of tourists that don't have a choice here now.
Think the "World Famous" has gone to their head with the prices now out of this world.
We visited and they only had 'hapuka' and the pieces looked very small for $6.80 a piece. We asked for some snapper and the answer was they don't have a 'quota' - there is a huge fish unloading dock 50 metres along the road where I'm sure they could get some.
Anyway we opted out when we saw the prices - went to town and asked around and the locals said you could get fresh fish and chips (and also other meals) beside the old Mangonui Hotel.
We had the best fish and chips - big pieces of snapper and so many chips we could not eat them all far cheaper - well drained and crispy batter. And we could sit outside and eat them with a lovely view of the harbour.
