We picked the Prestige 9 course Menu to experience Nevin's signature dishes. The setting was nice and not fussy, it did get very hot a few times in the dining room but the air conditioning would turn on to cool it down again, the staff were attentive and informative. The amuse bouche was really nice so we were off to a great start, the choice of breads was also nice. In my opinion throughout the menu there was almost too many flavour combinations on each plate. For the 1st course the Langoustine was beautiful, as was the truffle cappucino, the 2nd course was the Duck plate, this was by far my favourite and every element was extremely tasty,3rd course was Sea Scallop, Im not a big fan but my boyfriend said this was his favourite course, the pork cheek was delicious,it fell apart and the textures of cauliflower was very interesting. The 4th course was the Passionfruit jelly which as a palate cleanser was very welcome at this stage, it was quite tart but I enjoyed it. Unfortunately from the 5th course onwards there was quite a few negatives: For the 5th course Kettyle of Beef I ordered medium (as not a huge beef fan) and my boyfriend ordered medium rare, both were cooked the same so it was overcooked for my boyfriend and both were slightly tough which was such a disappointment, the braised featherblade was also dry. The 6th course was Goats Cheese Fritter, when I cut into my fritter it had no cheese inside, also we both thought that this course should either be left out or should come before the main dish of beef. 7th course was pre dessert of a pineapple tirimasu with popping candy, the popping candy was a nice surprise but didnt add much when the tirimasu wasnt very flavoursome, the 8th course was the main dessert of a chocolate sensation dome and it was a neat touch the way the waiting staff pour warm chocolate sauce over the dome and it falls apart to reveal the brownie, but if you are not a big chocolate fan(like me) this dessert will not be for you as it was very rich and there is not enough of the milk ice cream to provide a contrast against the richness. To finish we recieved our tea but no petit fours.
To make it clear I gave a rating of Average above as there is not a "good" scoring and unfortunately it was not worthy of a very good score. Saying all that Im glad we attending MacNean as its another restaurant ticked off the list, I was wondering before I attended as to why it did not have a Michelin Star, especially after reading all the Excellent reviews but after dining there I understand why not, I have eaten in a few Michelin Star restaurants and unfortunatly it just wasnt perfection.
