We drove by car over the National Forest to Glendalough from Dublin. The closer to town we were, the greener and more 'traditional' Irish countryside it was. Wonderful drive. Be sure to stop at the visitor center when you arrive. You can purchase a map and an information guide for 1-2EU. You can walk to the ruins at no charge but would benefit more from it with a guide so you understand the significance of what you are seeing. Many trails to walk on and the Monastic ruins are very interesting and picturesque. The ruins are a short stroll in and so easy that even small children can walk too. After strolling around we decided to go for a run on one of the side trails. We ran a mile or two in and it was just so quiet, peaceful and beautiful. If leprechauns are hiding anywhere, it is there :)
