“pretty creepy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2009

This hotel is pretty creepy and the staff clueless and unprofessional. I stayed in one of the big villas - the decor (very different from what appears on the website)was bizarre (sort of haunted castle meets surfer dude). The staff seem completely unsupervised and the owner was completely disconnected to being in the hospitality industry. They actually served Tang and called it "orange juice" - in bali the land of amazing fruit - that is sacrilege. Too many people in Bali with money to burn but no clue as to how to run a business.

We have a cancellation policy. Cancellations must be done at least 10 days in advance or deposits are not refunded. The above review is inaccurate and the result of us not refunding the deposit the day before check in.

This hotel is awful – one of the worst I’ve ever encountered in my many travels for pleasure and work. We were in town for a wedding, and the stress we encountered because of this hotel nearly overshadowed the celebrations. I rarely write hotel reviews but actually went as far as to register this hotel on Trip Advisor just so I could warn other visitors to Bali to avoid this unpleasant hotel.

I booked the Estate House 'villa', and we choose the hotel based on its website and location upon the cliffs of Uluwatu. Upon arrival, we were disappointed to find the ‘Estate House’ looks nothing like the website. Despite the lovely ocean views, our ‘villa’ was a strange stone mess of a building. It was creepy, with weird and insufficient lighting, ‘decorated’ with bizarre random items, and we were actually nervous to walk around the ‘villa’ alone. The toilets were cracked and some had what looked like old gum stuck to the top of the seats. The mirror frame in one of the rooms looked like someone had clawed at part of it. When we asked for an additional sheet (there were no top sheets on the bed) they never brought them and it wasn’t until we asked again in a more pointed manner later that night that they begrudgingly brought us top sheets. They were also remiss in providing us with complimentary clean drinking water, although even the cheapest hotels in Bali provide bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth – the villa had a watercooler but it was empty when we arrived, and when we asked for it to be filled they claimed they would fill it – but never did.

On our second day other friends of ours said they saw staff and various children coming in and out of our villa, and that night there was mud and muck on one of the bedrooms floors. My friend’s Macbook was locked with a security lock onto some furniture, and when we got back that night it appeared the lock had been jingled and as a result, was jammed. We spent a panicked hour trying to fix the lock and get it de-attached from the furniture. We can’t prove that anyone tried to steal her computer…but the timing of the lock being played with combined with knowing people were in and out of our villa…

Breakfast was not good. While they did serve fruit, the ‘fresh juice’ was powdered orange juice – again, even the cheapest hotels I have stayed in in Bali served at least bottled orange juice if not fresh juice.

The last straw was when two of the villa’s three bathrooms flooded and the toilets stopped working. The owner halfheartedly tried to fix it, saying ‘its hard to find a good plumber in Bali’…which may certainly be true, but every other hotel I’ve stayed in has managed to keep their toilets working.

Overall, while there were a few kind staff members it was clear they had received little training and were basically helpless in providing us with a basic level of service – which also made things awkward as we didn’t want to make them feel badly since this reflects more on management then them as individuals.

We decided to check out early and book into another hotel – for the prices this hotel charges you could find a MUCH better hotel anywhere in Bali. Really, stay away from Puri Uluwatu.
