“Still #1”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

This was our second visit to Bali, and after a couple of wonderful weeks in Seminyak, Lombok and Ubud, we realized that the only thing we missed this time around was Alila.

On our first visit we had stayed at Alila Ubud and Ailia Uluwatu, but on this visit our itinerary did not really bring us close to any of the Alila properties. Since our flight back home was rather late in the evening we came up with the idea of leaving Ubud in the early morning and spend the last day closer to the airport and thus make the most of our last day in Bali.

The day before our departure we contacted Alila Uluwatu and asked if they could accommodate us from early morning to late evening, and arrange for us to have a dinner at The Warung in one of the bales on the ocean ridge. They promptly replied that this would indeed be possible, no need to do anything else than just arrive and enjoy.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a small "welcome home" committee and smoothly whisked to our room for the day. The room was prepared according to our preferences from the previous visit, right down to the type and numbers of pillows, books, newspapers and we were promptly served our favorite ice cold signature ginger tea.........we already knew what we wanted for dinner, so we preordered and they had already confirmed our departure flight and arranged transport.....so the only thing for us to do was to enjoy our last day in Bali.

Alila Uluwatu is a stunning property, location, design, ambiance, everything just comes together at this place, but it is the silky smooth, professional and yet super friendly service that is the icing on the cake, everything just seems to work so perfect in a calm and seemingly effortless way........as mentioned above, everything was just ready when we arrived, and when we came down to have dinner in The Warung, the bale was ready with loads of candles, rose petals and everything was timed perfectly for our departure, they apparently knew from our previous visit that we liked the coconut filled pancakes, so they served this after dinner as a small surprise.

I had wondered if the property would still be in good shape, as the Bali climate and the proximity to the sea can quickly deteriorate even the best materials, but everything looked as if it was just opened, actually the years gone by has improved the property somehow, since the trees and bushes has had time to grow into place and sort of completing the place.

Is this the best hotel in the world?? - well no one can really tell, it all depends on what your needs are at any given moment, your personal taste and how well these subjective criteria are fulfilled, and thus it will never be really objective, but if such a list was compiled I would not be surprised to see Alila Uluwatu hovering around at the very top of the list.

Once again, thank you for a wonderful stay, although way too short.

We were in Alila Villas Uluwatu for our wedding last 6 July and we stayed for five days at the villa and this amazing resort-villa is definitely among the world's BEST. Whatever you may have seen of the resort in photos, the experience of being there itself exceeds all of that. From outstanding world-class service, to the scrumptious food, architecture and stunning design, and the overall zen-like quality of the place, you wouldn't desire to leave Alila at the end of your stay! On our first three nights, we were at the three-bedroom villa with family members and were assigned a very sweet and efficient butler named Edi and he all loved him - especially the kids! Our wedding coordinator, Ari, was also a gem of a woman - taking care of all the wedding details with panache. After the wedding ceremony, we moved to a one-bedroom private villa for our mini honeymoon and we loved it even more than the three-bedroom villa. The whole place looked like something straight out of a wondrous holiday dream! Needless to say, our wedding at the Sunset Cabana is something that we will never forget - and I hope our guests won't, as well. Sometimes, I would catch myself drifting off to numerous daydreams of the fabulous Alila. That only shows how great an impression Alila has made in us. I agree with the other reviewers: ALILA is like a little piece of heaven on Earth. But don't just take our word for it, book your next holiday there and experience it for yourself.:)

We stayed at alila villas for 4 nights recently and had an amazing stay. Right from being met on arrival at the airport to arriving at the hotel and meeting with Nicky. Here she explained the facilities and the 3 service options available. We elected for the indulgence option and had the lovely Agus a phone call away to assist with any of our questions. We stayed in the one bedroom villas and the setup of the villa is beautifully designed and we thought through with the day bed, lap pool, sun beds, cabana and outdoor table and chairs. The villas are also very private and we spent much of the day in our villa moving from the cabana to day bed when the sun was too strong. The food in the resort was outstanding. Shortly after arrival we opted to fine at Warung for local cuisine and it was delicious. The breakfasts at Cire changed daily with a great selection and portions the perfect size. The coffee was excellent and the service was very attentive. The location whilst remote and serene - is at least 1 hr to seminyak. We did travel into seminyak twice for dinner and with the choice of great restaurants namely Metis, sardine, sarong etc it is def worth the trip. All in all - a fantastic property, in a remote location with great service and food options. We will be back

Stayed at allila villas uluwatu for 3 nights. It truly deserves its status as #1 hotel at ulu watu. I'm somewhat surprised that it is ranked #23 out of all the hotels in Bali though. It should be easily top 10!

The resort is stunningly beautiful. It is exactly as what was portrayed on the website. I was somewhat proud of the Singapore based architectural film WOHA which designed this place. The sense of space, serenity and peace immediately embraced us as we were welcomed to the resort by the jovial resident manager Nikkie. The constant stream of cool ocean breeze completes the picture. It just feels out of this world. We could have sat at the lobby gazing out to the ocean with the breeze forever...

We did not manage to get a level 4 villa and were allocated a level 3 villa instead which also had a distant view of the sea. As what other reviewers had shared, avoid villas on the lower floors as the ocean view may be obstructed by the vegetation around the estate. The cabana and the pool were both well maintained and clean. The villa was of a very good size. There is also a huge day bed within the villa - my favorite spot. I find the design of the villa extremely innovative. The large window panels behind the bed and those facing the pool can be completely opened allowing the entire interior space to communicate with the exterior, and the cool sea breeze to permeate the entire compound. Bathroom was well designed, with double vanity and 'His' and 'Her' bath products which are replenished twice a day. We also enjoyed the jet shower and rain shower. Large wardrobe space. Nice touch by the resort to include bamboo hand fans and sun hats. Alila villas even provided a full range of facial clay masks, sun tanning oil, sun screen, sun cooling gel and insect repellent! Seriously, no complaint about the villa and what it came with.

We did not encounter any major problem with insects. I did not see any gecko around my villa, much to my delight. However, we did find several millipedes on the floor every night. This did not really pose much of a problem to us (even though I definitely do not like them), aside from accidentally squashing one of them. Oh, a monkey visited us one afternoon while we were by the poolside. Nice monkey which didn't try to take anything from us.

Evening turndown service was rather run-of-the-mill though. Service in Alila was truly five star (or more than 5 star), but we personally find that the turndown service might be one area which can be further enhanced to distinguish itself from others.

Now, about the food. Yes, I believe majority of guests did not even wander out of the hotel premises because there's just so much to enjoy. As with most other reviewers, we prefer Warung to Cire. There are so much dishes on the menu that you probably will need weeks to try all of them. There are 3 sampling set menus available on Warung's menu which are highly affordable. Consider sharing one set as the portions are rather big. We ordered two on the first evening and couldn't finish the food. We also met a very friendly guy, Janur, at the Warung restaurant, who gave us really great menu suggestions, and who took really good care of us three days in a row! Please say hi to him again should any of you meet him during your stay at Alila.

The infinity pool area is really popular as it offers an unobstructed panoramic view of the ocean, which the villas do not offer. As such, the deck chairs are frequently occupied. Try going early around 10 am to save a spot. The pool attendants are really prompt in their service. I love the picnic box which was provided at the pool which contained bottled water, towels, sunscreen etc. Very thoughtful indeed!

Another top venue for relaxation has to be the sunset cabana, the overhanging cliff side platform. Amazing views. You can also feel the full force of nature in the form of the howling sea wind. Bring a book and spend an afternoon in the shady and windy cabana.

I have also enjoyed the morning yoga session in the pavilion very much. Lovely setup. It is so different from practicing yoga in the enclosed studio. Ocean breeze, birds chirping, soft rustle of the tree leaves!

Finally, a few comments about the walk down to the beach. Do check out the time of low tide before starting on your journey. Walking down was not a big issue but climbing up definitely took a lot more effort. We took about 10-15min walking down at a leisurely pace and double the time for walking up. There are a few small platforms which we could rest intermittently on the way up. As what has been pointed out in prior reviews, the beach is not for swimming. But I personally find it worthwhile to make the trip down once and to spend some quiet moments sitting on the beach and just gazing out at the ocean and the crashing waves.

Honestly, this place deserves to be on the top-10 luxury resorts in the region. The service was also top notch. Everyone looks happy, hardworking and seems to enjoy their work, from the GM, the resident manager, the butlers, the buggy drivers, the waiters, the gardeners. We will definitely be back, just not as often as we would like to be, as true paradise does not come cheap.

Room Tip: Level 3 or 4 villas. We were in 314 which was the corner villa. Pretty quiet.

We had some friends who had rented one of the 3 bedroom villas and were blown away by the service and accommodations. Edi was the perfect "butler" who made sure everything was taken care of including a special area where I proposed to my partner. After a week, we were not ready to leave and can only dream of returning. The pool is wonderful and Cire restaurant was stunning. It is a drive to get to anywhere, but that is part of its' exclusive charm. They can arrange for a driver at anytime, so going into town was not an issue. Highly recommended for relaxing. The biggest decision on some days was what to eat for dinner.

This hotel has amazing views over the ocean. However, it is quite far away from anything else, perfect if that is what you are looking for but quite isolated if you wanted to go for dinner anywhere else or wanted to do something other just lounge at your villa. The villas are exquisite and the service very good
