“nice small hotel feel but far from many excursions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We recently came back from a week long stay here. If you're use to the big resorts with really large pool area and lots of entertainment at night than this hotel would be disappointing but if you're looking for a relaxing, secluded area with small resort feel/less people than this is a great hotel.

PROS: It was really nice that it's a beachfront property and it's pretty private so sometimes it feels like you have the entire beach to yourself. The breakfast buffet was delicious. Hector/Maureen at the front desk were wonderful.
CONS: This location is about an hour drive from Liberia airport. Excursions to arenal volcano/monetverde rain forest are about 4 hours away. Closest town worth visiting is tamarindo and that's a little over 30mins away ($35 taxi ride each way). Palo verde boat trip is about 1hour30mins away. Rinco de la veija and borinquein are also far (forget how far these are).
Also, it's advertised to have free wireless internet, but internet doesn't have a strong enough signal to work in the rooms so you have to be around the front desk or bar area to received wireless signal.
The pool is nice but small.

Also if you do stay here, I'd recommended stopping by local convenient store (a block away) to get snacks/water as it's a little pricey at the hotel and also check out the shack restaurant and el coconut beach club (good/affordable food). If you want to go to a fancy dinner check out Mar Y Sol (playa famingo), that restaurant offers free shuttle service from bahia del sol. Wanted to check out Lola's restaurant due to reviews on tripadvisor but it would've been $15 cab ride each way from hotel.

My family stayed here for four nights and we wouldn't change a thing. We toured around Costa Rican beaches and found ourselves wanting to go "home" where we would always be greeted by name. We visited Playa Flamingo (very American and built up), Tamarindo (fun to visit but way to touristy for our liking), Playa Grande (beautiful) Playa Avellena (Lola's a must see). The service at the Bahia was extremely attentive and surpassed any smaller issues on which other reviews have focused. We had an extremely private and spacious 2 room suite with a full kitchen, a large living area and a separate balcony seating area. This suite is perfect for a family - The hotel brought in a cot for our family of five. Marvin was constantly checking up on us and making sure our every need was met. He would even bring us iced waters (tap) without our asking to make sure we stay hydrated. Marvin and Leo also make delicious mojitos! You do not need bottled water in costa rica! The rooms were not four seasons quality but your not paying four seasons prices. We never had to worry about reserving a chair by the beach/pool and the beach was extremely private. We ate dinner here twice and both times were delicious, as was the breakfast. Anytime my kids finish their meals......I know it's a testament to the restaurant. We definitely plan on coming back here for another vacation.

From the moment we arrived we were surprised by how small and tired the resort was. They had messed up our booking and downgraded us to a standard room on the first night. We had travelled most of the day and spent 45 mins debating the error with our booking. The standard room that we were given was tired and a bit grubby. Later we ate in the restaurant and had a pizza. We were presented with a pre-made base with an unidentifiable topping. This was almost indelible and was the worst meal of the holiday. Other than breakfast, we never ate in the hotel again. In fact all the guest ended up eating in the restaurant next door! We were moved to a deluxe room which was marginally better - still tired, but larger than the standard room. There was an outdoor jacuzzi which had no plug and was very dirty. The hotel was isolated, although there was a supermarket and restaurant within walking distance. Overall we found this hotel to be tired, poor value and too isolated.

Room Tip: Don't stay at this hotel!

Dear Kiteman C,

First I would like to thank you for your recent visit and your comments. We are truly sorry that your travel agency did t informed you that our hotel is a small boutique Hotel, most of our clients as you can see in other comments appreciate the fact that we are not a chain, they enjoy being in an intimate and cozy environment. Potrero Beach one of the safest beaches in Costa Rica is not a crowed place, again a bonus for most of our guests, because is so tranquil and peaceful; keep in mind that you are 5 minutes from Flamingo Beach and 20 to 30 minutes from Tamarindo.

We didn’t messed up your booking, this was an error from your travel agency, as we have mentioned they need to refund you for the first night you expended on an standard room, we are still doing a follow up to your case so that you can claim what is yours. Regarding the pizza, let me explain that our base is not pre-made, well at least not pre made in a factory. We do our dough from scratch and keep it in the cold, that way as soon as we have a request we can have fresh pizza for all of our clients, we use high quality ingredients that are perfectly identifiable. Again we apologize if the pizza wasn’t of your liking in our rank is one of the favorites for lunch, as well as hamburgers, nachos and our typical “casados”. Glad to know that at least you enjoyed our breakfast that is included on our rate, where we offer a variety of fruits, cereals, yogurt, fresh bread and cake, our famous Gallo Pinto, eggs and more.
Our restaurant Nasu is a well recognized Restaurant in the area, not only our guests but the locals come and enjoys our fine cuisine. We also have great relationship with our neighbors and their business; we encourage our guests to try our food of course. Is not a surprise that once in a while they like to change environment and try other Restaurant, especially if they have a long stay with us. We have strict standards of cleanness, being said that we know that the outdoor areas can get messier quicker due to the fact of our natural environment and the powerful winds in our summer time.

Please accept our apologies for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay with us. Once again we thank you for your feedback; they are invaluable in helping us identify opportunities for improvement while assisting us in creating the ideal customer service experience for the future.

Sincerely yours,
Victoria Bonilla

My daughter and I stayed at the Bahia Del Sol for 7 days at the end of January this year. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect stay. Immaculate rooms, beautiful, well maintained grounds, gorgeous beach, great food & drink and a friendly staff with service above and beyond what is required. If you're looking for a bit of R & R, this is it. If you're looking for excursions to see wildlife, snorkeling, hiking, zip lining, boating, horseback riding....it can all be had and arranged right here. There is an on-site spa too where you can book a relaxing massage. Oh, and don't forget to try the specialty drink, Mango Mint (with or without alcohol), it's wonderfully refreshing and addicting :-) In other words, this gem of a hotel has it all and you won't be disappointed.

The Bahia Del Sol was nice & clean. It was also secluded, which we liked. The only problem with this place were the prices charged in the bar & restaurant. We caught our own fish, had them cook it, and they charged us more than if we had bought a plate with their fish. It was at least 4 times more than their nearest competitor. We should've known better, since the first night we were there, my husband ordered 2 drinks, one with alcohol, one with out, and it cost $25. If you stay at the Bahia, go next door to the Coconut Beach Club to drink or eat, although there are a lot of great inexpensive places close by.
The staff was friendly and helpful. Even they suggested going somewhere else to eat & drink.:)

Room Tip: The Standard rooms were very nice for 2, but the Suite would've been great for a family.

My wife and I just spent 21 days at the Bahia Del Sol--from January 29th to February 19. Needless to say, then you stay anywhere this long, you really get to know a place And the longer we stayed, the more we came to love this gem.

It's not just the immaculately kept grounds, or the fact that it's right on the beach, it's more than that. It's small and personal, but can deliver anything you could get at a larger resort. While we were there, they hosted several weddings, which were all very well done and also hosted a company outing for more than 240 guests, with catamarans, jet skis, kayaks, and umbrellas on the beach. They even have spa services (which we didn't take advantage of) and a small store/gift shop which carries everything from suntan lotion, to sunglasses to coffee and tee shirts.

More than anything, it's the people of the Bahia that shine--as brightly as the Costa Rican sun. We had great service from Mike, Maureen and Priscilla at the front desk (which is an outside open-air affair). They arranged for shuttles, tours and changed our money into the local currency--as well as giving us helpful advice on where to go and what to see. Mike (the manager) even came to our hotel room one night to get our wi-fi (which is free) to work on our laptop.

The folks at the outside restaurant and bar were also amazing--and treated us like family. The majority of them have been at the Bahia for many years. Leo and Jimmy at the bar are as talented as any bartenders we have ever seen. And the service we received at the restaurant from Marvin, Jose, Christine and Nubia was top notch. Although we got a chance to sample many of the local restaurants, two of the dinners we had at the Bahia were the most memorable. For my birthday, they prepared a table for us on a little grassy knoll, under an umbrella, out near the beach--50 feet from where the surf was rolling up. They were clearly committed to creating a special event for us--and they certainly pulled it off, with white table cloths, candlelight and all. They also prepared a wonderful dinner for us on Valentines Day. We were simply amazed that a small resort like this could offer such a full menu--and then deliver on every dish. Everything we ordered, from seared tuna, to watermelon smoothies, to bloody marys, was as good as you can get anywyere. As a note, the coffee they serve is Costa Rican. It was so good, we bought 4 lbs to take home.

While we carefully read many of the Trip Advisor reviews prior to booking the Bahia, we are hard pressed to identify with any of the negative comments people have left--although there are not that many. One person mentioned that the pool was not as clean as it could be. Well, this place is very lush--with lots of large trees and plants all around. Even though we observed the pool being cleaned several times a day--you could always find a few small floating husks or seeds. It certainly never detracted from our enjoyment of the pool--or the swim-up bar. A few people also mentioned the presence of flies in the restaurant. Well... you have to simply understand, the seating area of the restaurant is located outside, under a huge thached roof. Although there was an occasional winged pest, it was never an issue--and the benefit of warm sea breezes blowing though the restaurant, far outweighed any inconvenience. Additionally, our room was always perfectly clean, and everything we needed was provided. For instance, we asked the front desk if it might be possible to get a microwave to make popcorn at night--and an hour or two later, a brand new one was left on the counter in our room. They even bothered to plug it in.

All in all, we would highly recommend this place. It was exactly the relaxing type of spot my wife and I were looking for. So...if YOU are looking for a small, intimate resort, where every staff member sincerely goes the extra mile to make sure you're happy--but yet is large enough to provide all the important services, you'll be happy here.

Room Tip: We had room 112 in the back of the resort--furthest from the beach. It was large and seemed recentl...

We stayed here for 5 nights for my brother's wedding. The place is scenic and peaceful - we spent a lot of time just relaxing in the padded lounge chairs by the pool or on the beach. My favorite part was the gardens in the center of the hotel grounds, full of tall palms and tropical flowers. Walking along the garden path back to our room was like being in a tropical forest. The suites are enormous - much more room than my husband and I had expected. Not only do you have a full kitchen and living room, but each suite has its own patio with outdoor lounge chairs and/or hammocks. The hotel hosted the rehearsal dinner and morning-after brunch for the whole wedding. The food was pretty good, though I'm not enough of an expert to comment on the authenticity of the Costa Rican dishes.
