“Absolutely wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

Stayed in #29 upstairs on the ocean. Hotel and restaurant staff went above and beyond. Restaurant food was exceptional although not cheap, but worth the price. Clean and very quiet. The location is quite remote...take the beach shortcut (over the rocks, at low tide) if you want to save yourself at least 20 minutes to get to the nearest grocery store. Great surf casting right off the beach!

After booking a room for a family of 4, I had questions and Gabriela promply emailed back replies. We did not rent a car, so taxi in and out. Ingrid and Sujeily found us the desired tours that would pick up at the hotel. All 3 of these ladies are incredible! The food is fantastic and the wait staff as well! The entire staff had an interest in the surroundings and animals, they will encourage you to take it all in! It's a very different set up, rooms are in separate buildings, (duplex) amongst the forest, with paths leading to your door. Thought it would be too small with 2 teenage girls, but, with 2 sinks; it went well! You just don't spend that much time in your room! Clean and comfortable! The beach is beautiful, pool peaceful and it was all around one of the most pleasant vacations we've taken!

After an initial small room mix-up (needed 2 beds but got 1 at first), we were shown to a lovely room with fantastic deck - more like an outdoor living room - right on the ocean. And from then on, the stay was quiet and restful and recommended. Sugar Beach is a fairly isolated private beach in a spot that doesn't seem to have rip tides. The restaurant and service staff were excellent. There is a nice pool when the beach is too hot, and, of course, lounging on the private deck during the hottest part of the day was great. Enjoyed the lizards, squirrels and birds too. Sunsets on Sugar Beach are quite amazing. We only stayed 3 days, but didn't leave the property. If you're staying longer, you may want to explore the area with day trips because Sugar Beach and the hotel property are not large.

This place is fantastic! The rooms were very nice and comfortable, the service was great, and the food was amazing. The staff was very accommodating, and able to work around allergies and food preferences. I have celiac disease, and although much of their food is naturally gluten free, they prepared many of my dishes on separate equipment to avoid cross contamination.

Hotel Sugar Beach sits on a beautiful, secure private beach. We often had the entire beach to ourselves. There is also plenty to do. The hotel has a great pool, boogie boards for use, birding guides, and dvds and games to borrow. They also arranged a couple of tours, including transportation for us.

I recently stayed at Sugar Beach Hotel and I can't say enough about the property and its staff. Upon our arrival we were greeted by friendly, welcoming staff that guided us to our villa even at 11pm. The room was beyond impressive. Stylish and private with a stunning view and huge wrap around balcony. The staff at the restaurant were amazing, Gilbreth, Victor, Isaac, and Eric really made us feel welcome, they truly made the stay so much more enjoyable. Great, professional service especially from Victor, what a classy gentleman.
Another stand out employee was Pablo, one of the supervisors, was extremely helpful, courteous, and professional. The pride in this hotel was obvious in just speaking with him.
The beach here was truly breathtaking, coming from a local Hawaiian, that may say a lot. The powder like grey and black sand along a quiet, secluded bay was absolutely amazing. The sunsets with the catalinas in the distance made for quite a few great pictures.
I couldn't imagine staying anywhere but Sugar Beach Hotel the next time I visit Costa Rica.
Thank you everyone there that made our trip so memorable.

We stayed here for 4-5 days in mid March, 2013. I wish we had found the place earlier and we would have stayed longer. The location is awesome, on its own white sand beach, with rather calm waves you can actually play in safely. the rooms are large and very clean, modern and well-equipped with a small refridgerator, coffee maker, large cable TV, large closet, safe, etc. From our porch we could watch the large troop of howler monkeys right above us in the trees. the food in the resaurant is very good and the wait staff could not be more attentive and freindly. They have their own herb garden for the many tasty dishes we enjoyed. Pablo, the manager, is a very charming young man who took the trouble to write my husband a lovely note about their conversations during our stay. did I mention the beautiful shaded pool with the ocean view??? this place would be the perfect spot for a destination wedding or family vacation. thanks for the best part of our trip!!!
