“A Competent Version Of Purgatory”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

During a road trip across Botswana, we required the Majestic Five Hotel as an overnight hault between Maun and Sun City; this hotel fitted very well into that task, seen as it was slap bang between the two stops, and was very comfortable. I could have asked for nothing more, seen as I slept in a fine bed, was kept in a fine room, and ate a decent meal. My only issue, was that this was the closest thing to purgatory I will ever see.

Its souless building, was so empty, that apart from on other man me and my farther met at the bar, the hotel was completley devoid of any life. As I sat at the bar, with a silent bar tender cleaning glasses behind marble surface, I sat in silence as offensive violin music offended my ears through the shiny-new speakers. I am sure it was intended to be for the pleasure of the guests, but seen as we and one other were the only guests there, I did not quite understand the logic of this.

Naturally, we made our own entertainment, and the night turned out to be rather entertaining, however this dead hotel seemed out of place in the bustling town of Palapye, that does not seem to need such a sophisticated facility that is evidently not being used to its vast capacity. As another note of disagreement, the packed breakfast we were given in the morining for the car journey to South Africa seemed to be the odds and sods from the kitchen, along with some cast of fruit, and a few other items I would never consider for breakfast. Fortunately, the women maintaining the petrol pump we visited in Palapye was tipped with this feast, and seemed very pleased with it, something that made me feel rather ungreatful.

Now this is a hotel that seems out of place. You would expect a facility like this in Gaborone, Moremi or Chobe, but sitting elegantly between these areas in Palapye is the real majestic. The rooms, lets say, they are just roomy. I like space around me, especailly when in Africa where there is plenty of it. This hotel provides not just space in your room but magnificent space. Walking through the passages of the hotel one is reminded of the best I have seen in the first world. It is not cheap and so it is not for the casual traveller. It is for the busy executive, the government official perhaps, who prefers a relaxing environment after a long day's work. It is for the serious traveller who, when he gets to rest, enjoys a relaxing ambience. It is for those but if you can save a bit, a night at the Majestic Five will be an experience of a lifetime.

I spent a week staying at the hotel for a training course. Unlike other writers who have had short stopovers, mine was of a different nature. No welcome juice, had to wait for more than hour for the access card for my room. Arriving at the hotel you are confronted with continuous power outages. Coupled with poor service, no hot water at times, no water at times, no internet made all other weaknesses stand out glaringly. At least half of the delegates (all of them locals) complained of some kind of food poisoning due to the power cuts affecting the ability to refrigerate and prepare the food freshly. Insufficient toilets at the conference venue meant that when the toilets became blocked, one had to walk far distances to find toilets and then had to navigate the venue in the pitch-dark due to power outages. Access cards do no work every time after the housekeeper has cleaned your room and it warrants a porter to come and reset your access to your room with swipes from a handful of cards. Air-conditioners in the rooms do not run below 18 degrees resulting in it feeling hotter inside the room that outside at night. Poor finishing of fittings in the room smack of a cheap corner-cutting approach. Wall plugs are skew and risk breaking when you push in a plug. Poor english and spelling errors on the marketing material (such as Magestic Hotel instead of Majestic) just adds to the sense that the hotel, though new, has invested as little money as possible to furnish and kit out the place. No complimentary pressing service exists and housekeeping will not provide you with an ironing board and iron. All of this would be bearable if the hotel staff were up to the task. However, complaints are often met with a stern-faced apology and limited effort to resolve the problem. It seems clear that staff themselves feel helpless and are unable to assist, either through inexperience or a recognition that there is little that they can do. A colleague had her pants destroyed by having bleach mixed on it. The staff responded poorly with no effort to repair, reimburse or make any reparations. Instead an appeal was made not to tell management. Repeated meetings with hotel management since the first day about poor quality have had a marginal impact in the improvement of service quality. In the end, lack of electricity means there is no hot water, no lights, no air-conditioning or any service that relies on electricity. The piped oriental music in the corridors simply add to to "foreign" feel of the hotel. The hotel is still new and most likely will call these issues teething problems. I'm not sure that they have a promising future. There is nothing majestic about this hotel. I will not be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the restaurant side of the hotel. Power outages have not fried the wifi infrastru...

We recently did a 4x4 trial and stayed over at this newly build Majestic Five Hotel & Convention Centre all state of the art.
What a welcome with fresh juice served on arrival. The porter did our rooming and explained all in details. Satellite Television, electronic lap top safe's & coffee tea station! 24 Hours room service the rate included a full English Breakfast. The Gym need some attention to detail. Conference facilities for 500 delegates and a Cigar Lounge. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We had an excellent dinner from the buffet and Live asian cooking by Chinese chef Nicky.

Room Tip: The Hotel offers a Deluxe room as an entry level good value for money! They also offer superior room...

As explained this hotel is brand new - the hotel portion is near on complete, but work still being done on the conference facilities. Slightly 'souless' in a large hotel kind of a way but good staff and the rooms are nice. Wifi is available and is quick. Definitely the best option in Palapye and a short drive back to the border.

As several reviewers have indicated Palapye is the ideal stop over distance from Chobe or Vic Falls to South Africa. We stopped here and then travelled on to the Kruger Park as boarder crossings nearby are quick and efficient. As previously stated the hotel is not fully complete and has some teething problems but the rooms are spacious with brand new equipment. It was disappointing to see the rooms cooled by small window rattlers instead of split unit air cons but the installed unit did the job of cooling down the room if somewhat noisily. The restaurant is also has some teething problems with french toast at breakfast being severed cold, however it has the potential for a really good meal. Overall the staff are extremely helpful and the hotel gets full marks for service. This hotel is without doubt the best in Palapye and should be able to solve its teething problems quite quickly.
