“Much much more than a B&B!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

This charming B&B is in the delightful village of Colyton and is handy for the beautiful Jurassic Coast and local resorts such as Sidmouth, Lyme Regis and Seaton. The tram for Seaton begins here and passes through Colyford. Great for birdwatchers! The Old Bakehouse is a sympathetically restored old building, with further upgrading of the bathrooms in progress to make it even more deluxe than it already is. Frances, the owner, made us feel so welcome and that's the reason we keep going back! There are some lovely touches, including fresh milk with the tea and coffee, kept cool in a little room with fridge, maps, ironing board and lots of other things you might need. There's a guest lounge downstairs where you can relax or simply meet up before setting out. There's parking off road to the rear of the property, which Frances arranges for you, so no need to worry about your car.The breakfast was wonderful(beautifully prepared fruit), with festive touches such as Bucks Fizz, Kir Royale and scrambled egg with smoked salmon. As Frances also runs a tea room and garden, as well as a light lunch menu, there's a chance of 'room service', as well as the opportunity to order a packed lunch or flasks for a day out. She really cares about her guests and does everything possible to make them feel comfortable. Her staff are lovely and just as keen to please.

We have been staying at The Old Bakehouse for many years & always have a wonderful stay.
Frances is so thoughtful & literally thinks of everything. The little extras really set it apart from other establishments such as the supply of fresh milk, plentiful tea & coffee, the availability of tumble drier & the beautiful guest lounge. The rooms are tastefully decorated & extremely comfortable. Her breakfasts are wonderful & really set you up for the day. There is nothing we can ever say we have disliked about our stay. Thank you Frances.

We have been staying at The Old Bakehouse for several years now, two if not three times each year. We're always assured of a very warm welcome from Frances, the owner, who has created a superbly comfortable & homely 'B & B', where nothing is too much trouble. The bedrooms are delightful & the breakfasts delicious. Guests have the added bonus of a room with supplies of tea, coffee, light bulbs etc, plus a fridge, iron, ironing board & tumble drier. The girls who help Frances are charming & always smiling. The Old Bakehouse stands in a tranquil setting in the small & very historic town of Colyton & is well placed for exploring Sidmouth & The Donkey Sanctuary, Seaton, Lyme Regis & the Jurassic Coast. There are plenty of walks to be enjoyed, plus Colyton is at the northern end of the Seaton Tramway & the fascinating journey through the nature reserves of the Axe Valley to Seaton, is a trip not to be missed! We look forward to our visits & are never disappointed. The Old Bakehouse is a wonderful place to spend a little time - so thank you Frances. Brenda & Dave, Birmingham.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and that nothing was too much trouble. All aspects of our stay were faultless. Clean rooms , plenty of towels for all the family, ample tea , coffee etc, with the added bonus of a fridge for fresh milk just along the corridor. We all had a comfortable and peaceful nights sleep followed by a fabulous freshly cooked piping hot breakfast, with endless top ups of drinks and toast. The whole experience was exactly what should be expected from a bed and breakfast. Well Done Frances. Keep up the excellent work.

I have visited The Old Bakehouse on many occasions over the past ten years-usually to chill out-never disappointed.
Very informative website.
Frances puts a lot of thought and effort into ensuring that her guests are well catered for-nothing is ever too much trouble.
Her cooked breakfasts are superb.

We were looking for a nice place to have a quiet relaxing couple of days away to recharge our batteries, the Old Bakehouse was recommended to us by a friend, so we thought we would give it a go.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted by Frances (the owner) who made us feel so at home and it felt like we had known her for years. The Old Bakehouse is charming and very very clean, the room we had was excellent and very comfortable, and even the addition of a guest lounge and also a room with a fridge and other facilities for the guests was great. Frances was also very helpful in recommending places for us to go for meals in the evening, and the places we went to (The Habour Inn, Axmouth, seaton in particular) we really enjoyed our meal.

The breakfast at the Old Bakehouse was fantastic and really did keep us going throughout the day! As others had recommended the poached eggs I thought I would give them a try. I was not disappointed, "Lovely" :-)

The surrounding area is really beautiful with lots to see and do. We particularly enjoyed visiting the Donkey Sanctuary (We have never seen so many Donkeys in our lives) and also the Lyme Bay Winery (The sampling was pretty good!!)

Overall, if you are looking for a really lovely, quiet, relaxing time then visit Frances as the Old Bakehouse, Colyton, you wont be disappointed.

We spent one night here and it was wonderful. Very friendly, comfy and clean. Nice with parking possibility, good breakfast and it was good situated on our way to Conrwall. I can really recommend "the Cobblers" across the street for dinner as well.
