“Honeymoon Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2011

We stayed at the Menjangan for our honeymoon and had a magical time. We stayed in a beach villa and it was just stunning. Enormous rooms right on the beach and the most amazing open air bathroom - candlelit baths at night under the stars! The staff were so friendly and couldn't be more helpful particularly Gelgel. He arranged all the activities we wanted to do including snorkelling, diving, horseriding, a personal BBQ or Bali dinner to celebrate our 1 week and 2 week wedding anniversaries!!! He also helped us hire a motorbike so we could explore the area - even reccommending other resorts to try. We went to nearby Mimpi and a Turtle Rescue Centre as well as visiting local temples. All the staff had ideas and tips for us and were wonderful.

The spa should have a special mention - it was fabulous. Right out in the mangroves, so relaxed, the staff were brilliant and we even have a deer stop by and eat in front of us whilst we were having a massage!

Breakfast was wonderful and you could eat all you wanted meaning we probably over ate every morning! The Bali Tower - where you have breakfast - is an amazing building with fabulous views at the top.

We stayed for 2 weeks - longer I think than your average stay - but not only did we have plenty to do (thanks to the staff) we were allowed to move up to The Residence for our last 2 nights just for a bit of variety. It's a large building in the hills with it's own pool and usually used for groups. It was just stunning and such a treat - amazing views and pool.

My only criticisms of the Mejangan is that the food was a bit hit and miss and overpriced as a result. However the new manager seems to be aware of that, and even when we were there was coming up with specials on the evening menu. We were just hoping for more seafood. The resort is totally stunning but would be made perfect if the pool was by the beach. It is in fact a 15 minute buggy ride away and the beach is very shallow and a dead reef - so hard to walk into the sea and swim as you'd have to walk a long way and it would hurt standing on all the coral. If you love swimming - like me - it's a little disappointing, you have to walk around to the jetty and swim off there. Although it's not a long walk, it's not quite the same thing.

These are of course minor points and the food particularly seems to be being dealt with. I therefore cannot reccommend this place enough - we will have so many happy memories for the rest of our lives.

Dear CankFrog,

Warm greetings from the other side of Bali!

It was indeed a pleasure having you with us those two weeks!

I am very happy you enjoyed your stay and honored that you chose us to spend your wedding Anniversary. Congratulations!

The Menjangan indeed has plenty to do and it is great that you had time to try snorkeling, horseback riding and diving, even enjoying our spa! We are very fortunate being located within West Bali National Park, where deer roam freely and have no worries at all to come close to people!

I am glad you got to try the Residence as well as it is certainly a special place. The views of Bajul Bay are stunning, as you said, and the private pool really adds to the experience!
Regarding the food, we are constantly changing/adapting our menus depending on guests’ comments and feedback. We have already added more choices and will put in place a new menu next month. We offer fresh seafood from the area but unfortunately can’t guarantee all the items daily as the weather sometimes doesn’t allow our suppliers to catch everything we have on offer so we usually propose the unstable items as Daily Specials which are important as well, especially with long staying guests as yourself.

The pool at the beach would be a great addition and in fact, we considered that during the initial stage of the project although taking into consideration the extensive use of concrete involved and obvious restrictiions on which we initially considered but could not materialize due to the effects on the overall site with massive use of concrete which would compromise our approach to develop the resort with the minimum possible impact on the National park.

Nonetheless, we are looking into some options and will let you know!
In regards to the beach, nothing much we can do during the low tide but for the rubber shows we shall get that sorted out relatively soon as it was already on our list. For swimming, jetty area without any doubt is second to none but a short walk away.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay and greatly appreciate your warm comments!
It will be our pleasure to have you with us again in the near future, please keep in touch!
Thanks again and kindest regards,
Eloy Estevez

The Menjangan Resort is an amazing place! Our group stayed at the Menjangan Residence and this was great. The villa consists of a living room with a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea + 3 suites and a private infinity pool, which we enjoyed using every day after we came back from the excursions and found it amazing to be completely isolated and have the entire pool only for us. If your group is large enough to take this place, go for it; otherwise we would recommend the beach villas.
One of the highlights of the trip was obviously the snorkel at the Menjangan island, it was really amazing...the massage at the outdoor cabins facing the sea were also incredible and someone in our group also tried the horse back riding sunset at the beach and enjoyed it.
All the staff members were extremely friendly. A few of them did not speak English very well, but this did not bother us at all, since they were always willing to help and smiling.
The resort is about 4 hours by car from Denpasar airport, but totally worth it! It is very secluded and exclusive.
If you enjoy being away from the crowds and discovering a different side to Bali, this is the right place to go!

Merci beaucoup pour votre tres gentil commentaires! It was indeed a pleasure knowing you and having you with us at The Residence.

We were very happy to read your comments regarding your stay. Glad you enjoyed the activities on offer and the effort of our staff, even though, as you said, some are still learning English (something I am working on!)

I hope you come back soon either to stay at the Residence with your friends once more or to try our Beach Villas with your significant other! You will be happy to know that we have opened Pantai Restaurant at Sentigi Beach for lunch as well and that we have also completed the Water Sports center, offering Diving now apart from Snorkeling and Kayaking.

The Menjangan was our second hotel on Bali during our 3-week tour of the island. The place is very remotely located in a national park, our driver referred to it as Jurassic Park. Upon arrival we were worried about the remoteness, and the reception area looked as if no guests had been there for ages (maybe eaten by wild animals?). On top, our room was a monsoon lodge, next to the pool, but 1.5km away from the beach. The resort turned out to be a number of scattered buildings accross the jungle (reception with lunch/breakfast area, pool with monsoon lodges, beach villas with dinner area and swimming/snorkling options,...) all located about 1 km away from each other. The hotel does provide in free transport with a safari jeep, but it takes you some time to move around as the roads are not surfaced. You can also walk of course or use a mountain bike... We complained about our room being far from the beach because our main interest was snorkling and diving, and after some negotiating, we got a free upgrade to a beach villa, right on the beach. This was a top-class beautifully designed spacious room, marveleous. The beach villas are also next to a small bar and the restaurant used for dinner, so you can just walk up there as of 6p and ennjoy food and drinks (during the day however, this bar is closed so the room mini-bar is your only option...). Dinner is served right at the beach on a terrace above the sea, really amazing and very exclusive! For breakfast you need to call the reception and then they pick you up 10 minutes later with the safari jeep for a 15 minutes ride to the reception area where the breafast is served. You can also use that area for lunch, we did not do that, as the breakfast gives you a wide choice of bakeries, eggs, fruits, cereals, enough to take you trough the day until an early dinner. The villas don't have a telephone but you get a walki-talki to communicate with the reception, which all adds to the jungle-feeling. Attraction #1 starts at day break with a stunning sunrise at 6a that you can watch from your bed if you like (at the beach villa that is). Snorkling at the magnificant unspoiled reef in front of the resort is a 5' walk away from the beach villas. Also the spa-area for a relaxing massage is located there. Of course the terrace of the villa is a super place just to hangout or read a book or surf the net (free wifi in the middle of nowwhere!!!) at the beach in the company of the monkeys who come down from the park to eat the fruit of the trees at the beach. Other options are horse-back riding, bird-watching, mountain biking and hiking, not our cup of tea though. Diving is arranged, pick-up to the dive shop takes 30 minutes, then 1 hour by boat to get at world class dive sites at Menjangan Island. On the return, the diveboat stops at the resort, that saves a bumpy ride back. Normally the resort can also take you there by boat, but their boat was broken when we were there. We never made it to the pool and monsoon lodges, but other guests said it was very peacefull there, isolated and nice rooms. Troughout our stay of 4 nights, our estimate is that there were around 10 to 20 guests, all was very peacefull and quiet.
Ooverall: a heaven on earth, lovely place to hang out, read, enjoy the sea.... except it has a price. Our room rate of 215USD was not that bad after we got the upgrade to the exclusive beach villa (normal price 365USD). Prices for drinks and dinner were at european level which is extremely high for Bali. So you pay a very high price for an exclusive place to stay. The food was reasonably good, and the service was excellent, very friendly people, always ready to help you!
If you disregard the high price, we can rate this hotel a 5/5, we had a wonderful time there!

Room Tip: Get the beach villa!!!

Dear Joe,

Greetings from The Menjangan!

Thank you for your kind comments. We are very happy to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you liked staying at the Beach villas.....magic location!

Snorkeling is definitely one of our most popular activities due to the location of the resort right next to Menjangan Island, one of the best sites in South East Asia. We have now completed our new Water sports center where we will offer Diving out of our own jetty.

I am pleased to let you know that Pantai Restaurant at Sentigi Beach is now also open for lunch so you can enjoy a snack and drink while listening to soft, relaxing music through the day.

I do understand that waiting times for a lift to get to the Bali Tower for breakfast can sometimes be uncomfortable but we are in the process of upgrading the road as well so it will be a smooth, faster ride from now on.

Needless to say, being the largest resort in Bali (in size) comes with some challenges. Distance can be one of them but also a positive point as when going from one place to another, you can always spot deer, monkeys and all kinds of birds, etc.

Even though we have been full for the last two weeks, guests also appreciate what you commented on, that it seems like you are the only one here and are able to easily relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the location.

Lastly, I wanted to thank you for choosing us for your holiday and also and giving us some feedback. This is very important for us and I take guests comments very seriously in order to adjust/change and adapt to guests needs and expectations.

Hoping you will come and visit us again in the near future,

I send you our warmest regards,

Eloy Estevez

Our family really enjoyed a 3 day stay at Menjangan. A very welcome break from the hustle of city life for a family with 2 teenagers. The snorkelling, horses and massages were excellent. Loved the location of the meals at the 2 separate locations (one on the beach the other above the "jungle" canopy.

Room Tip: Rooms by the pool were nice. The beach would have been even better. But more expensive

This resort is remotely located. It reminds of an African savanne with in the middle of the dry season in the dry part of Bali lots of trees with little to no leaves. Our cliff villa was some 2 km from the "Bali Tower" containing the restaurant and lobby, which was overcome by a slowly driving car with us sitting on a platform on top, giving excellent views to the Menjangans (local deer) scattered around the fields.

We were given the choice by the manager who took all his time for us to choose between the booked cliff villa or two newly developed beach villas. This was a hard choice, since the beach villas are in modern-asian style with concrete floors sitting right on the beach. We choose however for the cliff villa which is a little outdated with 20-th century style dark wooden floors, walls and ceilings making it impossible to read at night. The location however is superb, completely on your own with a personal boy taking care of your needs and magnificent bay views and a perfect private pool. Since we were here for only two days and after that would stay in a beach side villa on our next stop, we choose the cliff villa. If we would have stayed here for 3 or more days we definitely would choose the beach villas. Now we lived like james Bond for two days in splendid isolation.

The nature is great, the beach is OK. They are currently developing a beach restaurant and some more villas, so beware of finding a less empty resort than we did.

The only thing that needs attention is the food: it's OK, but nothing special. The Indonesian food is not very tasty nor spicy, probably adapted to what they think we like (not). The European food is decent, but not great.

The prices are a bit steep, but I imagine that our money supports the conservation of this enormous natural park and the location in the wilderness close to Menjangan island giving the best snorkeling and to a lesser account diving makes up for this.

Dear Oldenhaag,

Greetings from jungle at The Menjangan!
It was great having you with us for those couple of nights! Thanks so much for your comments, I really appreciate all the feedback we can get.

I wanted to let you know that the lighting in the Residence is much better as we have installed more reading lights (thanks for your feedback). We were also very glad to hear that you enjoyed the isolation and uniqueness of the location, style and the pool!

Next time you might want to try the beach villas though? We have now opened Pantai Restaurant at Sentigi beach for both lunch and dinner receiving very good comments from guests. Adjacent to the restaurant is Azur: perfect area to have drinks before or after dinner with a bit of chill out music and candles after dark..

As for the food, I have spoken to our chef, Attila, who runs the kitchens of our three properties in Bali and we agreed to add more Indonesian choices and also spice them up a bit. It was already in our mind actually but your comments had helped us to make it happen faster now! Thanks.

It was a pleasure having you here and getting to know you. I do hope you can come back in the near future to experience all the changes that bit by bit are making this resort unique and truly special.
Thank you!

Kindest Regards,

Eloy Estevez

I must say I do not fully understand all of the negative comments on Tripadvisor. Sure, there is much to improve but the hotel's environment is really stunning. The hotel is in the middle of the forest and also has a secluded beach with mangroves.

We did the snorkeling tour to Menjangan Island which was lovely. The other tours the hotel offers seem too expensive (trekking with guide,...). I think it is worthwhile to look for alternatives (outside of the hotel) before checking in.

We stayed at the monsoon lodge. Rooms were clean and big but lacked some decorations and were way too dark (even with the 2 extra light they put in the room) They should also use better pest control. We were also shown the new beach villas (which cost about double of the rooms at monsoon lodge). They look nice but we noticed that there were still construction works going on causing noise pollution.

The restaurant is actually in the "Bali Tower" which is a marvelous wooden construction which gives panorama over the forest. I regret to say that the food served in this beautiful tower was really disappointing as was the lack of atmosphere (no candles, music,...).

Despite these negative points, I would certainly return to this peaceful place although I think I would spend the extra money for the beach villas (once completely finished).

Room Tip: Get beach villa

Dear Modecai Beisbak,

Greetings and thanks for your comments! We appreciate your feedback as we constantly strive to make improvements and increase the standards in service, facilities, activities, etc.

We have now installed new lights in all the rooms which definitely make a difference. As you know, we are in the middle of the Bali Barat National Park and not allowed to use pesticides so we have certain limitations in dealing with mosquitoes, etc.. although finding ways (natural ways) to deal with those little issues.

You will be happy to hear that we have changed the menus. Chef Attila comes up regularly and constantly receives feedback from guests and ourselves in order to adjust/improve the menus offered). The Bali Tower (all day dining venue) and the newly opened Pantai Restaurant (open for lunch and dinner).

Pantai is located right next to the beach villas complemented with Azur lounge / bar area, with bean bags scattered around the beach, and soft, chill out music playing in the background.
Great location..

Hope we can welcome you back in the near future.. I am confident you will be very pleased with the final product offered now that the whole property is completed..

With warm regards
