“A tranquil family holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2011

Our family really enjoyed a 3 day stay at Menjangan. A very welcome break from the hustle of city life for a family with 2 teenagers. The snorkelling, horses and massages were excellent. Loved the location of the meals at the 2 separate locations (one on the beach the other above the "jungle" canopy.

Room Tip: Rooms by the pool were nice. The beach would have been even better. But more expensive

This resort is remotely located. It reminds of an African savanne with in the middle of the dry season in the dry part of Bali lots of trees with little to no leaves. Our cliff villa was some 2 km from the "Bali Tower" containing the restaurant and lobby, which was overcome by a slowly driving car with us sitting on a platform on top, giving excellent views to the Menjangans (local deer) scattered around the fields.

We were given the choice by the manager who took all his time for us to choose between the booked cliff villa or two newly developed beach villas. This was a hard choice, since the beach villas are in modern-asian style with concrete floors sitting right on the beach. We choose however for the cliff villa which is a little outdated with 20-th century style dark wooden floors, walls and ceilings making it impossible to read at night. The location however is superb, completely on your own with a personal boy taking care of your needs and magnificent bay views and a perfect private pool. Since we were here for only two days and after that would stay in a beach side villa on our next stop, we choose the cliff villa. If we would have stayed here for 3 or more days we definitely would choose the beach villas. Now we lived like james Bond for two days in splendid isolation.

The nature is great, the beach is OK. They are currently developing a beach restaurant and some more villas, so beware of finding a less empty resort than we did.

The only thing that needs attention is the food: it's OK, but nothing special. The Indonesian food is not very tasty nor spicy, probably adapted to what they think we like (not). The European food is decent, but not great.

The prices are a bit steep, but I imagine that our money supports the conservation of this enormous natural park and the location in the wilderness close to Menjangan island giving the best snorkeling and to a lesser account diving makes up for this.

Dear Oldenhaag,

Greetings from jungle at The Menjangan!
It was great having you with us for those couple of nights! Thanks so much for your comments, I really appreciate all the feedback we can get.

I wanted to let you know that the lighting in the Residence is much better as we have installed more reading lights (thanks for your feedback). We were also very glad to hear that you enjoyed the isolation and uniqueness of the location, style and the pool!

Next time you might want to try the beach villas though? We have now opened Pantai Restaurant at Sentigi beach for both lunch and dinner receiving very good comments from guests. Adjacent to the restaurant is Azur: perfect area to have drinks before or after dinner with a bit of chill out music and candles after dark..

As for the food, I have spoken to our chef, Attila, who runs the kitchens of our three properties in Bali and we agreed to add more Indonesian choices and also spice them up a bit. It was already in our mind actually but your comments had helped us to make it happen faster now! Thanks.

It was a pleasure having you here and getting to know you. I do hope you can come back in the near future to experience all the changes that bit by bit are making this resort unique and truly special.
Thank you!

Kindest Regards,

Eloy Estevez

I must say I do not fully understand all of the negative comments on Tripadvisor. Sure, there is much to improve but the hotel's environment is really stunning. The hotel is in the middle of the forest and also has a secluded beach with mangroves.

We did the snorkeling tour to Menjangan Island which was lovely. The other tours the hotel offers seem too expensive (trekking with guide,...). I think it is worthwhile to look for alternatives (outside of the hotel) before checking in.

We stayed at the monsoon lodge. Rooms were clean and big but lacked some decorations and were way too dark (even with the 2 extra light they put in the room) They should also use better pest control. We were also shown the new beach villas (which cost about double of the rooms at monsoon lodge). They look nice but we noticed that there were still construction works going on causing noise pollution.

The restaurant is actually in the "Bali Tower" which is a marvelous wooden construction which gives panorama over the forest. I regret to say that the food served in this beautiful tower was really disappointing as was the lack of atmosphere (no candles, music,...).

Despite these negative points, I would certainly return to this peaceful place although I think I would spend the extra money for the beach villas (once completely finished).

Room Tip: Get beach villa

Dear Modecai Beisbak,

Greetings and thanks for your comments! We appreciate your feedback as we constantly strive to make improvements and increase the standards in service, facilities, activities, etc.

We have now installed new lights in all the rooms which definitely make a difference. As you know, we are in the middle of the Bali Barat National Park and not allowed to use pesticides so we have certain limitations in dealing with mosquitoes, etc.. although finding ways (natural ways) to deal with those little issues.

You will be happy to hear that we have changed the menus. Chef Attila comes up regularly and constantly receives feedback from guests and ourselves in order to adjust/improve the menus offered). The Bali Tower (all day dining venue) and the newly opened Pantai Restaurant (open for lunch and dinner).

Pantai is located right next to the beach villas complemented with Azur lounge / bar area, with bean bags scattered around the beach, and soft, chill out music playing in the background.
Great location..

Hope we can welcome you back in the near future.. I am confident you will be very pleased with the final product offered now that the whole property is completed..

With warm regards

It's very hard to give a truly accurate view of how the resort is now - as the Menjangan Resort I stayed at in December 2010 will be completely different to how the massive refurbished resort will appear now.

Firstly, be aware of a couple of things, to make sure that this is the place for you. The Menjangan (as I think it is now called) is as far away from mainstream Balinese tourist resorts as you will find - which we wanted.

We came to rediscover the amazing snorkelling off Menjangan Island (which is 20 minutes offshore from the resort) we first saw 20 years ago - and it is still to my mind the best in Bali - I imagine the diving will also be spectacular but we didn't get the chance.

We discovered a lovely hotel set in huge grounds in the massive Bali Barat National Park. It's covered in forest with Menjangan (local deer) all over the place. The original hotel was conceived in 3 sections - the restaurant (with the stunning views from the Bali Tower), the beach, and the main rooms where the pool & reception is (you call for an African style van where you have seats on the roof and admire the animals!). We stayed in an old Mondoon Room, and to be honest, it was fine. However we were lucky to be there when the new manager was there, and he spent loads of time showing us the completely revamped rooms (look fantastic) and the amazing new Beach Villas (right on the beach) which I am already trying arrange a trip to stay in, as they were stunning.

Sure, back in December it wasn't the finished article, but is should be by now. No, it's not uber-luxurious because you are in the most isolated part of Bali set in a massive national park! And if you don't forget that and appreciate the relative isolation, you will have an amazing time. There are few places like this anymore in Bali.

Room Tip: Beach Villas=on beach, other rooms=not on beach!

Dear Moonchild123

Thank you so much for your review. It was indeed a pleasure taking you and your father around the property sharing with your all the proposed upgrades and changes during your stay last year. We are confident that you would be pleasantly surprised if visiting the resort nowadays…

The retreat is now completed and doing very well while we can’t deny that there is always room for improvement as we strive to bring up the standard of service all the way across the resort.

The property itself, with such location represents a unique getaway for those that appreciate the natural beauty of the location and the solitude and remoteness of The Menjangan.

Menjangan island is definitely one of the favorite spots and I would say one out of 2 guests visit the island for snorkeling or diving.. As you shared with readers, it is indeed a special place, not for everyone but worth the drive!..

Thanks again for your positive comments and encouragement which means a lot to us as we are working hard to turn around this amazing spot into one of the favorite eco retreats on the magic island of Bali!

With warm regards

1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2011

I booked a weekend in the Menjangan Resort as a birthday present for my boyfriend. I was in much contact with the hotel via e-mail, and upon their advice, booked a 2 night package. This was to include a snorkelling trip at Menjangan Island, a 2 hour horseback ride through the national park, access to bikes and snorkel gear, and a special traditional dinner on the night of my boyfriend's birthday. I was to pay $780 in total, which I realised was pricey (particularly for Bali accommodation) but presumed our experience would have been so luxurious and wonderful that it would all have been worthwhile. I could not have been more wrong!
Firstly, upon our arrival we were informed that we were only one of two occupied rooms in the whole resort. This would not have been an issue for me, except for the fact that the hotel had charged me $40++ per night extra because of it being their "Busy Season".(We later spoke to someone at the bar who said it was always the quietest time of year)
The second main issue was the snorkelling - we were told upon arrival that it was not possible to go on the 5 hour snorkelling trip that day, but we could do so the following morning. This was fine,we went on the horseback ride. This was lovely, a half hour shorter than promised but it was still nice. The next morning (the only full day we had at the resort) we were up and ready to go snorkelling, only to be told by the receptionist that the weather was too bad that day, and that no boats were going to Menjangan Island at all. This was a huge disappointment, and it also surprised us as the day was quite calm. We then took our bikes for a cycle around the grounds (rubbish bikes and very uneven pathways), and decided to cycle to the nearby harbour to ask about the snorkelling. You can imagine our outrage when we saw a number of boats going to and from the island, with tourists for snorkelling excursions!! A boatman at the harbour suggested that the reason we were told we could not go snorkelling that day was that it was very quiet and it would not have been worth getting the boat/snorkel company for just the two of us. NOT impressed!
We then booked a trip with that boatman for the following day, planning to get a refund from the hotel. Of course when we were cycling back, the chain on my boyfriend's bike snapped, just to add to our rage!
Onto our special traditional dinner at the top of the tower. The tower is beautiful, amazing view and staff are very friendly. Our dinner was pleasant, I was delighted when the staff brought out a birthday cake for my boyfriend and each of them personally wished him a happy birthday. So things were looking up.....until about 5am the next morning when I was violently ill from our wonderful dinner. So, of course, the snorkelling had to be cancelled again!
When I raised the snorkelling issue with the manager, he initially tried to refund only half of what we had paid for the snorkel trip. After a lengthy and stressful argument, he eventually agreed to refunding most of the snorkelling trip and the busy season surcharge.
The resort is in a fantastic location, the rooms are very nice(if you don't mind the extra company of a large gecko and many smaller lizards both nights, and a pathetic air con system) and the resort has massive potential. The lack of maintenance is obvious, as well as a lack of customer service.
All in all, a total rip off. What was meant to be a special birthday present ended up being a total disaster.

Dear Rev 11

It is indeed unfortunate that your experience did not go as planned. I am positive that things would have gone different should you have visited a little further as the resort was going through major changes since the takeover of the property by Lifestyle Retreats with adjustments in staff and also a bit of work those days.

In any case, your comments are extremely valuable to us as they give us a great chance to analyze our strengths and weaknesses and consequently, help us to improve the product offered.

When you stayed with us it was indeed high season, thus the extra charge although we could have considered your request at that moment for which we humbly ask you to accept our sincere apologies for that.

As for the snorkeling, unfortunately water wasn’t very clear on that day. Our team members considered that fact while operators from other properties didn’t and sent their guests out for snorkeling. We did it in the past and in return we had guests complaining about not telling them about it in advance for which our team members made the decision not to offer it to you.

They should have shared with you their reasons to avoid such negative impression. We have addressed this matter to the team and corrected it accordingly. Rest assured that it had nothing to do with the numbers as all the services available at the resort are available to any number of people regardless.

We have also upgraded all the bikes and repaired the roads around the resort which is being done in close cooperation with the national park. Occupying almost 400 hectares, I am sure you appreciate that this is not an easy task. Consequently we have prioritized all the areas usually frequented by our guests In this first phase of the project while we will be working in other aspects of the surroundings gradually during the low season.

I do hope you will come and visit us again, taking into consideration that we have upgraded both facilities and quality of service and we are now receiving great feedback from our guests. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you would do so. It will be a pleasure welcoming you back at The Menjangan..

With Kindest Regards,

Jose Luis Calle

We actually booked a night in the waterfront gazebo's, but were given an upgrade to a room in the main resort, because of renovations. This was a very nice room. Big, lovely bed, very nice bathroom. The pool, however, was dirty and the amount of flies and mosquitos just made it impossible to sit outside.
We then realised we needed to take the shuttle bus if we wanted to go to the beach (which was small and dirty) and the restaurant. The beach is small and dirty and this was where the gazebo's were. Let's just say we were very happy we couldn't stay there. Since they're being renovated now, they are probably going to look better though.
The restaurant has great views.
All in all, the room was good, the service was good, the restaurant was good, but we felt like we were in a forest by ourselves with absolutely nothing to do... Others may like that, but we felt isolated.

Dear Cynthia207

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback regarding your stay, which took place right in the middle of some major changes by Lifestyle Retreats as part of the refurbishment and upgrade program. As you mentioned, the gazebos were very basic and consequently we converted them into Spa Treatment rooms part of the Mangrove Spa while the beach is nowadays cleaned daily and looking much better as you can imagine.

Basically we have gone through a complete make over repositioning this jewel of a resort as it deserves. At Sentigi beach we have now 7 private beach front villas on white sand, long chairs and umbrellas, as well as a chill out area with bean bags, mattresses and pillows offer a choice for the more traditional or the trendier. The new Pantai Restaurant also at Sentigi beach is opened for lunch and dinner while Azur lounge complements such location with drinks and candles after dark.

If you decide to come back and visit us, you will find that the place is completely transformed, with a lot more life and with plenty of things to do.

Please contact me should you require more information, I am at your disposal.
With warm regards,

Location is the the key, but the facilities are a little tired and need a bit of a touch up. New manager Jose Luis .... was there and chatted to all guests to find what they/we thought was needed to get the resort facilities up to date. Stayed in Beach Gazebo 4, nice but doors did not close/seal & fly/mosquito mesh ripped. Could not lock the doors, were advised twice that no security box was available (but there is). So security of passports. laptops, cameras etc was a worry. Had lunch delivered to the Cliff Top Villa (Rp50000 delivery), this was a spectacular location, but looked unused & pool a yukky green colour as the villa area is powered by generator and not run when no one home. Bali Tower fantastic, views from breakfast area and tower sensational. Very happy to see Bali Starlings. A Captive Breeding program at the resort brings some of the wild birds in just behind the monsoon lodge (see photos).
Recommended for a few days & may be really great when Jose Luis gets all his plans going for renovations & the new beach bungalows open (very soon).
Would recommend having your own transport as otherwise you may be totally reliant on resort facilities/activities, which are plenty.

Dear Tangmaster

It was great meeting you both during your stay at our resort. As shared with you those days we were just starting the refurbishment of the property following the change in management and ownership. Long way to go at that time but lots of enthusiasm and positive energy to turn around the resort. Your comments and feedback were indeed very positive as it was your support and encouragement. Thank you.

The beach area is now transformed into a magic place and the resort is now doing very well once we have completed the whole project. You should definitely come for a second visit. We are confident you will appreciate how cool the resort is… Some guests shared with us that they felt like entering Jurasic Park!

Location is simply amazing as you well pointed out in your review while with all ongoing upgrades and improvements in place The Menjangan is definitely set to become one of the most special places in Indonesia.

Stay in touch and hope to welcome you in the near future..

With warm regards
