“Fantastic Resort - Don't forget the trip to the mini bateaux!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2008

After reading previous reviews we were a little wary of staying here but i can assure you they were all wrong! Pierre & Vacances - Le Rouret en Ardeche resort is fantastic!

We booked a 4/5 person house which was immaculate. There was a bedroom upstairs with 3 single beds and a bathroom. Downstairs there was the living room which had a surprisingly comfortable sofa bed and a very useful downstairs w/c. It managed to fit our family of 5 in very comfortably and there is plenty of storage and wardrobe space. However the selling point of this house was the view from the large decked terrace over the valley it was stunning. I recommend booking a house as they are all new and have lovely terraces surrounded by lavender bushes. You can book apartments in the Vallon district i think its referred to as, however this resort is a little out of the way a good 10 minutes walk to the main centre, whereas the houses are all situated within easy reach of the centre with the shop, pools, reception etc.

As for the facilities the main pool is lovely, perfect for relaxing around! however if you want a sunbed make sure to take down you towels in the morning to reserve a couple! theres also a slide at this main pool in which you collect a rubber ring and slide down a surprisingly long chute.....great for the kids! There's also another pool a little further away from the centre which is good for early morning lane swimming. Also the day after you arrive you can go down the the laundry room just behind the shop in which they give you an umbrella to use free of charge for the week. This proved very useful to take to the pool or on the terrace for a little shade.

There's good shop on site open from 8am - 8pm. If you don't want to queue for your croissants in the morning get down there early! There are also 2 restaurants which we didn't use but they looked very nice, a bar and icecream parlour and reception was open 24h a day (high season only)

Another nice attribute that this resort had was the entertainment in the evening. It wasn't hugely busy however there was a children's festival on the tuesday night with lots of activities and games for the kids, a market came another night, a live band another night and the usual disco!

There's lots of activities to do mini golf, rollerblading, tennis, horse riding, archery, kids clubs, mini farm and don't miss a trip to the mini bateaux which are located in the botanical gardens of the chateau on site. They are small boats that you can navigate along a small canal system for 5 euros. Great for the kids but we did witness a few dads looking like they were having a great time behind the wheel of a mini ferry or tug boat that you can drive!

Food shopping is a little distance away about 15mins car journey to nearest lidl or intermarche but there are plenty of smaller shops and fruit vendors along roadsides.

As for the area i recommend a kayak trip down the Ardeche river through the gorge. There are lots of companies mostly located in Vallon Pont D'Arc which will offer you different length trips. Great day out.

Overall we had a really enjoyable holiday here. Highly recommended.

Brand new house (we paid for a 7/8 person house for 2 adults & 2 kids as it was just 30 Euros more) well equipped and balcony overlooking the main site.

But - and I know mid June is maybe slightly out of season - how come most of the facilities are closed?

For example: 3 swimming pools available, only 1 was open.
The water slide was only running on request (very accommodating lifeguards but that's not the point).

And as for food.... the only shop on site is open for 3 hours a day so make sure you stock up as the next nearest shop is >10km away... and the restaurant is closed altogether 2 days a week. It's also an ice cream shop but it doesn't open until 19h00 by which point the need for ice cream has diminished and kids have gone to bed.

Oh and the restaurant doesn't take credit cards (unheard of in France!) but that's OK there's an ATM in reception - but that's only open from 09h00 some days.

So if you want to take advantage of the great accommodation, you need to withdraw cash between 09h00 and 12h00, to wait until 19h00 to see if the restaurant may be open. If not you could always have bought some food in the shop that closed 5 hours earlier!

If you want anything to eat between 13h00 and 19h00, you'll have to drive over 10km to Ruoms...

Is it just me or has nobody given this much thought?!! the only self catering holiday I've been on where you can't actually cater for yourself!

On the upside, we had a wonderful dinner at the Chez Lili pizza restaurant nearby on the D111 - restaurant opened early specially for us and the food was plentiful, good quality, friendly service and cheap. Don't be put off by the appearance it's worth stopping. The town of Aubenas is also worth a visit

  • Liked — The accommodation was great
  • Disliked — Very little to do - many services not offered, restaurants and shop closed etc...
