“Damp and mouldy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

Spent one night in a cold noisy room, with mould growing on ceiling in room and bathroom. Tea and coffee placed on dressing table but no plug for the kettle which meant having to unplug a bedside lamp and move the kettle to the bedside table.

Would not recommend this establishment.

We were based here as part of a British Council education trip and so we needed a comfortable base initially. The George is certainly comfortable, with bags of friendliness packed in too.

The rooms were clean and cleaned daily. The bathroom and facilities in the rooms, whilst basic, are just what you need. Who wants to spend all their time in their room when you have so much to see and do outside anyway? (The hotel were good at recommending trips and they put us in contact with Kevin's Travel and Tours who were excellent from start to finish. Ask for George and Michael, two terrific drivers and nice people)

There is a coffee shop where you can get good Illy coffee and cakes throughout the day and the Quarters restaurant which does some excellent fillet steak at around 110R. The service was a little poor on the Friday evening but this was the only low. I had a problem with my steak but Rudi, the catering manager was happy to sort it.

Andrew, Christine and the bar staff help sort you with any drinks, Try the Zulu Blonde! And on Saturday there was a busy atmosphere with a live band and locals busying the place up.

Peter Engblom, the resident artist has his work displayed on the wall. Its ceertainly different. He is often around to chat to guests.

Leanne sorted out a lot of things for us during the day. Her, along with Richard the owner, and all the staff help to make this a great place.

The only negative was that we arrived aaround 8pm on the sunday evening. The restaurant was closed and the bar was only open for one drink. They did not seem like they wanted to help with getting us any dinner. Perhaps they could set up something with the local takeaways for guests who arrive late/after closing time of the restaurant.

I only stayed a week here but it is definitely a place I will revisit. The venue is close to tourist attractions whilst not getting the noise of Eshowe high street.

Room Tip: Call ahead and tell them any specific requirements

We stayed here overnight and were impressed by the friendliness of the staff. Rooms were big and basic and the food was OK. The bar was buzzing and the pool was a good place to cool down. Good place to base a visit to Zululand and the HluHluwe Imfolozi Game Park.

15 of us went to this musical event in The George Hotel. We are all from Scotland. We were completely blown away by the place. The vibe was fantastic...great music, brillant exhibitions, fabulous bars and a stunning welcome. Do not miss this place. It is unique!

I had the most wonderful time at the George. The rooms are neat clean and tidy, and great value for money. The beer made on site is amazing and the staff are a hell of a friendly and always willing to help. What a wonderful weekend. I will definitely return.

It's as simple as this- do not go into a tiny little town in the middle of Zululand and expect luxury or smoothly run operations. Yes, the electricity cut, I had no hot water, and the locals were boisterous. BUT.. it was fun, people were welcoming, there is a local brewery on site that does free tours (if you get the owner rowdy enough), back packers next door and the bar tab was very reasonable. Have no expectations, and you will not be disappointed. Oh, and the crazy artworkl on the walls? Ask the man himself, he is a local.

The George Hotel is the most beautiful colonial building - let down by poor hotel management.

The rooms are shoddy at best and the service is non-existent. They seem more interested in their bar traffic than their hotel guests.

If they advertised themselves as a backpackers, this place would be fantastic. As a hotel, poor.
