“The staff make the place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2011

I spent a lot of time looking at guest houses in Sauraha and i'm happy I chose Gaida Lodge. It has free wifi and a garden area like many other places in the area, it also has similar (but very clean) rooms to many other guest houses on offer, but what made it special for me was the staff. Every day they went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and enjoying my stay. They're very knowledgeable of the area and the activities they offer are really competitively priced. Gaida Lodge is probably the best run guest house I've stayed in during my nine month trip around South East Asia, India and Nepal.

The room was large and clean and a fair bit cheaper than similar accommodation we have stayed in in other parts of Nepal. The best bit was the lovely garden and pond which the individual lodges opened up to - very peaceful to read next to in-between activites. I can't comment on the food as I didn't eat there. We did not book any activites through the hotel as we found them a little bit more expensive compared to agents in town. However another guest did and she said she was really impressed with guides and service she received so it may be worth paying a bit extra.

I agree with the other positive reviews - this lodge has lovely grounds, is very well-run and very reasonably priced. The owner, who is a renowned ornithologist has a real commitment to the environment and to conservation in Chitwan. It was so nice to meet someone with principles who cares about the quality of the visitors' experience not just how much money they can make out of them. i stayed in a lodge with a little garden with lovely flowers and lots of butterflies. I even had a spotted dove nesting in the roof of the veranda! The assistant manager, Raja was my guide and was absolutely excellent - knowledgeable, with nothing being too much trouble. Had some great experiences on the trips out. The food was very tasty - the best Dahl Baht I had in Nepal.I arrived without booking, so looked out for the person holding the sign for Chitwan Gaida Lodge when the tourist bus arrived in Sauraha. Luckily they had one lodge available. The first night I stayed in one of their basic lodge, but the next day, even though I hadn't reqested it, they moved me to one of the best lodges 'Tiger's Den' and did not charge me any more. The rooms are not luxurious, but I found them very comfortable and loved sitting out on the veranda.

Room Tip: The four lodges nearest the entrance to the lodge are the best.

I chose this lodge because the owner, Tika Ram Giri is one of the top ornithologists in Nepal and my primary interest was birdwatching. I had set up most everything in advance letting them know I was most interested in parrots. The rooms in small cottages are very cute and the gardens are beautiful. The food was great and portions huge!

Tika was an awesome birding guide! He could hear the bird calls above other sounds like the SUV, farmers, other animals, etc and was very good at spotting them. He found so many birds I would never have seen by myself. The prices for the birding excursions was very reasonable and he charged the normal prices for the elephant safari and Tharu dance show and a bit for transport. I was really happy with everything and hated to leave. Only one word of advice, if you're a birder, don't come during monsoon!

Room Tip: Get the corner cottage near the stream.

Stayed at Gaida lodge solo last week. When i arrived i was the only person there so they let me chose my room for a very affordable price. The manager was very honest with me regarding booking tours and excursions with the guest house. I had had bad experiences with other managers who were very pushy regarding booking things with the hotel but Gaida was not like this.

Pros: friendly and helpful staff, reasonable prices, clean and big rooms, quiet
Cons: 10 min walk from town (may not be a bad thing),

Great. Everything was clean, calm, perfect.
Cheap, with a wonderful and expert guide in the jungle.
They book all for you: car to Kathmandu, elephant ride, jungle walk, jeep tour in the park. And the prices were honest.
You sleep in a lodge, big and clean, with satellite television.
It has "european standard",
Go there and you'll be happy.
Trust me, one of the best place to be in Nepal.

This is one of those places you would love to see do well because you see that it is family owned, and a lot of heart has obviously gone into the place - It really does have a real potential.
The place itself is actually lovely, the lodges are spacious and clean and have TV's and are really nice. The guy that works there clearly wants to help and for his business to succeed.
But for us the problems were just too much.
First of all there is a huge language barrier and so getting anything done is extremely difficult. Then there is the wifi which is about as reliable as Tony Blair and rarely worked, when it did it would frequently just go offline - Always at the wrong time.
The fan in the room is really poorly located and so the room gets exceptionally stuffy and hot at night.
We had no hot water for the duration of our stay and the restaurant adds 23% onto your bill. I know this is common elsewhere in Nepal, but not in Chitwan, everywhere else charges just 10%
Every single thing we enquired about such as safari, bus tickets etc were much more expensive at the hotel than elsewhere. And I mean a lot more.
I felt that the guy who worked there couldn't do enough and I got the feeling his hands were tied. At times he looked uncomfortable telling me prices and things and I really think the problems lie much higher than the day to day management, who I have to say were extremely friendly, gracious and hospitable.
I believe that this place has real potential to be a great little place in a beautiful location. But right now It fall too short and I would stay else if I were to visit again.
Shame really.
