“Fabulous!! (From Commodore Keegan OBE and Susan Keegan)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

The stunning countryside of the region in which "La Maison Verte" nestles is not the only reason to visit this part of France. More significant by far is the beautifully and thoughtfully renovated Bed and Breakfast run by the lovely Monica and Mark Green assisted so well by Spot the dog. The standard of the room in which we stayed for nearly 3 weeks is exceptional; thoughtful touches are present everywhere and the owners go "the extra mile" to ensure that maximum comfort and a stress free environment is maintained. Monica is a great cook and staying in for an evening meal is highly recommended - fresh ingredients abound, wine flows freely - somehow magic happens in the galley!

A warm welcome to a truly beautiful B&B, owned by FABULOUS people. Five Stars from us!!

Room Tip: 3 rooms. One of which overlooks heaven at the front, the other 2 rooms overlook heaven at the rear.

Getting to La Maison Verte is an experience in itself - stunning French countryside and deserted winding lanes lead to a tiny hamlet (on the way we saw chickens, frogs, birds and a shetland horse, but no cars!). An extremely warm welcome from Monica, Mark and Spot the dog ensued and we knew we'd found somewhere really special. We got there about 6 hours earlier than we had planned but it was no problem at all - after showing us to our beautifully appointed room, Monica rustled up a deli lunch of epic proportions, a crisp glass of wine and a cold beer and we browsed through their wall of DVDs and books, with Spot the dog popping in and out - bliss!

We had so many lovely experiences whilst at LMV and were totally spoiled - nothing was too much trouble. Our hosts even staged a surprise camp fire dinner at the bottom of their expansive gardens for my partner's birthday, with a bottle of fizz, BBQ and a tarte tatin baked by their neighbour. We sat by the fire, chatting, eating amazing food and listening to the frogs and the crickets, it was truly unforgettable. And when you go to bed and turn out the lights, it is so dark and so quiet - and the bed is so comfortable and soft - we slept extremely well.

The area is fantastic, with lots of historic and interesting places to visit and great food to be had. We particularly enjoyed visiting Oradour-Sur-Glane, a preserved village from the time of the occupation in France in WW2, and also the tiny French restaurant Le Marmite in Le Dorat. We also borrowed bikes and cycled along the river close by on a day when we didn't fancy getting in the car. Highly recommended! The best food of all however was at the B&B - of all the fantastic restaurants we visited whilst in France, Monica's cooking was the best hands down.

We are very much looking forward to returning to La Maison Verte soon!

Room Tip: Both the rooms are beautiful and have a view of the gardens

Monica and Mark are the most welcoming of hosts offering an exceptional package. Their house is in the middle of lovely countryside in rural France. The bedroom is very comfortable with a lovely bed and good ensuite shower. Monica cooked us a gorgeous dinner with wine which was really good value at 25 Euros. The breakfast was tasty too with everything we wanted. We shall certainly return.

We have now stayed with Monica and mark 3 times - one always worries that when one returns it won't be as good, but this does not apply here. I think the previous reviews have said it all. An outstanding restoration of the house with attention to detail in all home comforts plus more - lovely bedding, soft and large bath towels, heated blanket and comfy beds to snuggle into after one of Monica's outstanding meals. Somehow she manages to create tasty and appetising looking food which is eaten in a relaxed and cosy environment. Candles, flowers and lovely touches - even had breakfast outside in warmer weather with fresh roses on the table.. And yes, she cooks a sublime breakfast to order. They create such a welcoming environment, whether one is curled up by a blazing fire watching films or listening to music, or sitting by the camp fire BBQ at the bottom of their garden, complete with burning torches and table linen. It is unique.

This was our 2nd overnight stop at LMV, breaking our journey to and from the Pyrennees.
Monica and Mark (aided and abetted by Spotty their delightful dog) have worked tirelessly on the renovation of their old stone farmhouse/barn and created the most superb and I must say luxurious B&B.
We've stayed in many Chambre D'Hotes over the last 20+ years but this couple's attention to detail is second to none!
They take pleasure in spoiling their guests - Nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast - copious, fresh and delicious and Monica's dinners are 5*.
Our room was perfect, tastefully furnished, light and airy, with the added bonus of an insect screen on the windows allowing us to sleep with the windows wide open without the risk of flying interlopers! Such thoughtful and lovely touches as a selection of normal and fruit teas, coffee, etc. in the room - even a little pot of boiled sweets, quality toiletries, thick towels and fresh flowers. What more could one want!
Monica and Mark make fantastic hosts, and their accommodation and tranquil location, with super walks on the doorstep certainly make this the one to beat!
We will definitely return for a longer stay at the next opportunity.

Room Tip: All rooms are fabulous, you can't fail to be impressed and will not be disappointed.

We are a family of 2 adults, a teenager son & an 11 yr old daughter. We stayed at Mark & Monica’s place from 10th to 15th June. We took 2 ensuite rooms that came with our own separate living area.

It was our first experience living in someone’s house. Well…what can we say?! It was absolutely fantastic – a beautiful place (check out the pictures on LMV’s website – they look exactly as how we saw them – no Adobe Photoshop at work!), great food and even greater hosts! Words will not do justice to what we have experienced at Mark & Monica’s place.

We took a 2-hour TGV ride from Paris to Poitiers. Then drove for about an hour from Poitiers to LMV (passed through some very scenic views of the French country side) with the help of Mark’s directions emailed to us earlier – directions were to the tee! The GPS will also direct you to LMV’s doorstep.

LMV was re-fitted & re-decorated personally by both Mark & Monica! Yes, they literally re-built the whole place! Ask for a “before and after” photo tour by Mark, over a cup of English tea or coffee and by the fire place – absolutely beautiful & nostalgic! The place was done up only about a year ago and hence everything is still new & fresh although the rustic & country charm are still being retained.

We will not dwell into the specifics of the bedrooms and bathrooms furnishings – we had stayed in 5-6 stars luxury class hotels/resorts all over the world, and would say that LMV is comparable if not even better than some of them! Only item lacking in the room is a hair dryer though ;p.

Things to do – exactly as stated in LMV’s website. In addition, many nearby quaint villages to explore. Or, just do absolutely nothing and let Mark & Monica spoil and pamper you with their superb hospitality. On hindsight, we should have done more of that – just enjoy the place, food and the company of Mark, Monica & Spot!

Breakfasts (included in room rate) were great & sumptuous. Dinners (separate charge – either 2 or 3 course) were delicious with wine, beer & non-alcoholic beverages served. Sadly, we didn’t get a chance to do lunch (separate charge) & only had a single occasion of tea time (which was also wonderful - included in room rate) as we were mostly out visiting.

Our daughter is not one who likes food but she completely fell in love with Monica’s cooking. Our son enjoyed the evenings watching movies together with Mark (Mark has a good & sizeable collection of DVDs) & Spot (this cute little fella was always snuggling up to Mark underneath the sofa blankets) drinking & savoring chocolates! The adults enjoyed sipping wine, drinking tea/coffee and eating Monica’s freshly baked cakes & especially enjoyed the barbeque dinner in LMV’s vast & spacious backyard.

Will we visit again? Of course! We are already planning for next winter!
