“amazing stay...naturally!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2012

My husband and I spent 10 days at the Mangrove Lodge last december. The site is beautiful and cozy, rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. Mostly, we went sightseeing from morning to late afternoon, Haji is a perfect guide. And then excellent dinners at the restaurant, everyday fresh seafood and curries. Above all, thanks to the simple and natural atmosphere we experienced, we really relaxed and forgot for a while our day-by-day life, feeling always guests of Zanzibar and never tourists!
I would definitively reccommend the Mangrove Lodge for a wonderful holiday!

We had the pleasure to spend a week at Mangrove Lodge in January and we were enchanted. The place is simple, cozy and very well maintained to the smallest detail. There's something magic in this place, built as it is right a few steps from the Indian Ocean and run by the owner who puts his heart in the lodge. We enjoyed our morning walk through the garden, the peace of the beach, the colors of the water and that particular smell of the ocean, the company of guests that, like us, feel the need to excape from the crowds. The food eaten barefoot on the sand has an amazing taste! The last day of our stay the people at the restaurant were so exquisite to get us crab that was not in the menu but we asked for. Haji, with his experience and suggestions, is a precious guide. Simply put: we felt at home. In the cold of the winter, we cherish the memories. Thank you, Haji and the staff for this very special break. We'll be back!

Down the road a bit and past all the hustle and bustle of Zanzibar is the quiet and relaxing oasis of Mangrove Lodge. The lodges were well kept and clean. The service was extraordinary. We arrived at the tail end of the off season and were the only couple visiting. The meals were splendid and I definitely recommend eating on site. The beach was nearly private, clean and also well kept. We felt completely safe and enjoyed ourselves.

I would like to convey my positive feelings about Mangrove complex. It was such a nice holiday for me and for my friends from Turkey. We all enjoyed very much being there. We'll never forget nice lodges we stayed and "sand restaurant" Haci Ali, the boss, arranged for us at the beach under moonlight. Thank you for everything. Nilgun Celebi

We have been twice at Mangrove Lodge in 2009 and 2010 with our children.
We have been impressed by the great and personalized welcome we received from Marina and Hadji who do their best to satisfy us.
It is a nice place to enjoy the beaches while being close to stone town (only 20 min by dala dala!).
The bungalows are confortable and respect privacy.
The garden is marvellous.
In brief, we warmly recommend this hotel which is a very good value for money!

At the Mangrove Lodge Haji and Marina run an eco friendly and child friendly operation that is relaxed and stimulating in parts. The accommodation comprises of a group of thatched huts in spacious gardens with big comfortable beds. The bar and restaurant where you eat fresh food freshly cooked overlooks the beautiful bay. The ruins of a arabic palace lie close by and the beach is a very short walk away. When we arrived we just wanted to get in the water and Marina showed us down to the beach and the hut area with seats, benches, sun shades and swings. We were waited on and had drinks and snacks (delicious fresh cooked samosas and tasty vegetable balls, both a local speciality) brought down to us.
Haji arranged some terrific trips for us - we went snorkling around the exclusive island of mnumba and had a marvellously informative tour around Stone Town. It was all very reasonable and much better than if we had tried to organise things ourself.
It was not a place to get things done quickly but nicer and more accommodating people you could not find.
One last thing - their English was excellent but they are both fluent in Italian!

We PAID TWICE for a below par experience.

We made our reservation and paid the full amount for accommodation six weeks before departing for Zanzibar as per Mangrove Lodge's Invoice. Mangrove Lodge denied receiving the money even after supplying full tracking details. The result was that we ended up PAYING AGAIN on checking out. On returning to South Africa, the "missing" funds were traced directly to the Bank Account of Mangrove Lodge who eventually acknowledged having received them. I do not believe that there was any misunderstanding regarding the initial payment of the funds as there was extensive communication in this regard. I believe that their actions throughout have had fraudulent intent.

Marina at Mangrove Lodge agreed that the funds would be reimbursed to me. To date, some weeks later, the funds HAVE NOT been returned and my queries in this regard go unanswered.

I am extremely unhappy and disappointed at Mangrove Lodge's blatant dishonesty over the handling of our payment.

The bottom line is that I have PAID TWICE for a below par experience and been led a merry dance in the process tracing and following up on the bank transfer which was correctly handled by the banks in the first instance.

Shame on you, Mangrove Lodge. I hope other prospective visitors are warned by my experience and pay as little or nothing up-front, but better still, stay at a hotel where the ethics are better.
