We booked Sodwana Bay Lodge though RCI timeshare, and booked an 8 sleeper cabin. This consisted of two closed bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two beds, and then two loft style two bed levels on each side of the cabin. The cabin was comfortable to use with a great balcony over looking the natural bush. Two indoor bathrooms also with a great outdoor shower. Outdoor gas BBQ, so no charcoal needed. Good size fridge for your food. Take music and mosquito repelant with - it is in a Malaria area.
Driving from Durban take the N2 via Richards Bay turning off at Hluhluwe, all roads are then tarred.
Coming via JHB travel on the N17 and then N2 via Ermelo and Piet Retief. This is a single direction almost all the way so be aware of traffic times, takes about 8 hours, be aware of sand road via Jozini if you do not have a 4X4 drive futher down to Hluhluwe and then follow tar.
There is a massive pot hole just before Sodwana bay - Be Aware 6 PEOPLE WE MET AT THE LODGE HAD LOST OR SEVERELY DAMAGED THEIR WHEELS.
Enjoyed the Lodge as a divers location, which is about 10 min from the beach. To enter the beach you need to pass through a nature Reserve gate (R20 pp per day) The gate can get very busy, so plan extra time from around 3 pm in the afternoon.
Lodge has a pool and a games room below bar and restaurant. Found the games room a little desolate and locked most of the time. Other than that at the Lodge there is not much to do on site.
There is however option to:
Horse ride on beach or in forest from R150pp
Quad bike 1 hour R175 - R340pp
Paintball R50 pp plus.R0.5 per bullet
Guided Bird and Hippo walks/Canoe outings about 2 hours at R100 pp.
We did everything except the paintballing, and had a good experience. Booking is via mobile numbers that reception at Sodwana Bay Lodge can provide. A little informal in booking as it is as and when there is demand so make your plans at the begining of your stay so you can remain flexible.
Canoeing was particularly enjoyable, coming very close to live Hippos and crocodiles on a pretty lake/pan - Highly recommended.
Dive school and shop on site staff were good and friendly and competitively priced at about R220 per dive and R195 per day for full equipment hire. Equipment is not best but ok, but they tend to lend it out to multiple peolple at a time so hang on to your stuff. I tended to take it home with me as this saved running around every morning trying to find your stuff.
They do offer complimentary transfer to and from the beach.
The beach also has a little cafe where you can get sweets hot food etc between 7 and 3 in the afternoon.
The diving quality was excellent and there had not been much rain so great visibility. We saw loads of fish Moray Eels, rays, White Tip Reef sharks, turtles and fantastically an 8 meter Whale Shark, which we were able to swim with for 10 minutes.
There are shops in the local area to get the basics including a liquor store and spar about 10 minutes drive away.
The Local nightclub is Mak a Jol,which is basic but a good place to get out and have a drink and have a good time in shorts and flip flops.
Takes about 3 hours to get to Hluhluwe game reserve and St Lucia Wetland park and both are recommended.
Overall comfortable and looked like the most upmarket location in the area.
