My husband and I went to Gigondas on a wine-buying expedition. We learned that the best way to buy the wines of the region is at the Caveau de Gigondas, a centralized tasting room on the main square of the town. There, you can taste and buy any of hundreds of wines at the same price as the wineries themselves. Of course, we arrived at lunchtime when the shop was closed, but we found Le Caveau des Gourmets down the steps from the main square. The hostess explained patiently that this is a different kind of restaurant, where you get small tastes of food that go with the wines you are tasting. We had a six-course meal of small plates, all delicious, and perfect for us because, as Americans, we are not used to a large meal in the middle of the day. Furthermore, we found some excellent wines to buy and take home. The patio setting was peaceful and we managed to kill two and a half hours sitting there. So my recommendation is to understand your expectations and be prepared for a different meal experience here. It would probably be a waste if you are not a wine drinker!
