“A unique experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

This was our third visit to this beautiful guest house in Thornhill. We are never disappointed; the accommodation and hospitality are second to none. From the moment you arrive to the point of departure Rosie and Stewart make you feel that you are their main priority. The house is elegantly furnished but has a relaxed ambience and the bedrooms and en suite bathrooms are superb. Breakfasts are individual and delicious. A fire was lit for 8 o clock to make us feel warm and cosy.
The only sad thing was having to leave.

Room Tip: Both the bedrooms we stayed in had their own charm. Some may prefer the slipper bath to the roll top...

This is one of the best accomodations I have stayed in. Not only beautifully decorated but a wonderful warm welcome and a very homely feel. The rooms and beds are as good or better than most boutique hotels and the breakfast was fabulous.Worth every penny.

After a 33 hour trip from Australia, we arrived to the warm welcome of Rosie and Stewart. The house is absolutely gorgeous and you do not feel like you are "staying in someone else's house" which can sometimes be the case when staying at a B&B. The room we stayed in was huge, as was the bathroom, and so comfortable, with fluffy and warm throws and dressing gowns to wrap up in. The bathroom had a great tropical shower as well as a roll top bath.

Although we arrived long after supper, we were offered as much food and drink as we wanted. The breakfast was beautifully presented and cooked. We were lucky enough to be sharing the house with other guests, whom we got to know over breakfasts which was an added fun bonus. Although we only got to know Rosie over a few days, it was like spending time with an old friend !

We cannot recommend Holmhill Country House enough and will definitely be returning.

I'm really not one for B&B's as I feel uncomfortable at the thought of straying in someone's home, I'd really rather be in a hotel. However my parents-in-law booked this and therefore we didn't get a say. As B&B's go, it was very nice. We were travelling with our 3 month old daughter and the house was very cold when we first arrived, the heating was effective in our very large room however and we soon warmed it up. Our room was very nice and the bathroom was lovely! The owners had arranged to cook dinner for us in the evening and again a downside of a B&B we all had to choose in advance and agree on the same dishes - the food was pleasant though and the service warm and friendly. We slept very well in the incredibly comfortable bed and had an early morning wander in the gardens as our little girl was up bright and early. Breakfast was lovely although I was very disappointed there was no traditional Scottish square sausage :( again we had to pre-choose the night before, which after a two course meal I find particularly difficult and another norm in B&B's from what I hear.
Overall we enjoyed this however due to personal preferences we wouldn't return.

I stayed for the second time and was impressed again. The bedroom is large, the bed fresh, clean and comfortable, the bathroom included towelling robes, a walk in shower and roll top slipper bath. The owners work so hard and their standards are the highest you will find. They are so flexible and accommodating. It is also great value for money. Thoroughly recommended.

A group of 5 of us had a 2 night stay when we were in the area for the Buccleuch Challenge. Fantastic rooms, comfortable beds, plenty of hot water, delicious breakfasts and friendly and helpful hosts. We couldn't have asked for better accommodation for our visit. The package of shortbread for the journey was an added bonus. Thank you Rosie and Stewart

I stayed for one short night for a business trip, as surprisingly for somewhere so lovely, it matched my budget. The decor is traditional but not chintzy, the hosts are welcoming and friendly and they will do as much as they can to give you a wonderful stay. I had the evening meal which was a fabulous lamb tagine and a lovely almond tart (I thought I didn't like almonds, but it tasted great).
I think I am quite a fussy guest, a smiling host, a good quality breakfast and nice room extras. The fairtrade tea and the shortbread and glass of sherry were nice extras. The breakfast options were great. The pork was from a local farm and the fruit & yoghurt followed by pancakes, bacon and maple syrup put me in a good mood for the day. A perfect couple break away - not that I would turn down the option of a night to myself again either. The hosts may make it looks easy - but they obviously work very hard.

Room Tip: They will all be good rooms
