“Great option for vegans!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

I was looking for a nature-based environment to meditate and read, but I not only found it, in addition to that I wasnt going to starve like in others Hotels because there were vegan alternatives at the Cafe. There is no AC because you dont need it!! Its cold enough to even notice there isnt any. Great service, relaxing yoga class, variety of food and eco-friendly.

Going back soon, I hope!

We were in Puerto Rico for a week and stayed in 4 different places. We stayed at Casa Grande on the last night of our trip - only one night. Driving in PR is very taxing - road signs not matching our directions, some very winding roads along the coast and in the mountains - including the roads leading up to Casa Grande. BUT...once you're there, it's soooo relaxing. The fact that there was no air conditioning and only a fan just put me into a different state of mind. No internet, no TV, no radio - so we played cards. The sound of the river rushing just down the hill was lovely and peaceful. And the food in the restaurant was very tasty. I'm vegan so I was very happy to have someplace with options.

The only negatives:
- The pool was dirty with dead bugs and leaves, so I grabbed the skimmer and cleaned it before jumping in. I really don't believe it could have gotten that dirty in one day so I don't know when they last cleaned it - but who knows...maybe there really ARE that many bugs there!
- The lights outside of our cabin made it less desirable to lay in the hammock and look at the stars at night. They eventually turn the lights off outside the cabins (which my husband realized when he woke up in the middle of the night) but by then it had clouded over - bummer!
- The retreat is located right by a blind curve in the road, and our waiter explained to us that cars and trucks like to speed down the stretch in front of the retreat because it's a brief short stretch in an otherwise very winding road, so they blow their horns before they go around the curve. Hearing the honking is not exactly relaxing! But we didn't hear it at night, thankfully.

The cabins are lovely. Very clean and decorated simply but classy. The bathroom was actually the nicest one of any of the 4 places we stayed during our trip to PR! The beds were comfortable and the ceiling fan was enough to keep us cool as the windows were open to let air flow through.

I do wish we could have stayed another day to really chill out and do nothing but read and lay by the pool (which has an 8 ft deep end, by the way!) - and catch a yoga class! But we had to leave the next morning after breakfast for the airport (2 hours away). I'm glad we were there at all though. It really made me realize what I prefer in a vacation - quiet relaxation!

If you want a respite from your whirlwind vacation, spend a night or two here! The rustic rooms have essential luxuries, while giving you the intimacy with the mountain setting. The food is excellent. The gardens are amazing. The only caveat is that it is not the easiest place to find. Pay attention to the directions they give you!

Casa Grande gives you the ability to stay comfortably in wild green mountainous surroundings of total calm. This is intentionally not luxurious in the standard sense, but there is everything you need and the alternative luxury is that you are struck with how well thought out and how well managed everything is - the intelligence of the room design, the quality of the food (not showy but well done and satisfying) and the consistently friendly but quiet competence of all the management and staff. The lodge is a place of peaceful delight in an environment where you would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience this delight.

"these mist covered mountains are home to me now....."
This is a very isolated retreat up in the beautiful mist covered green thickly vegetated mountains in central PR. That is primarily what makes it special. Sitting on your deck looking out at and hearing the sounds of the jungle is magical. Come here to meditate, think, read and swim. If that's what you want, this is your place. However be aware: there is very little else to do. Gentle morning yoga sessions and good massage is available. If you want TV, Internet, activities, luxury etc, this is not the place for you. The rooms are sparse, but tasteful and somehow seem right for the environment. There is no air conditioning, but again, it felt good for this setting. Nice cross breeze, with the sounds of the jungle was quite pleasant. You will be eating the food here, because there is nowhere else to get food- but it was perfectly good. Service was friendly and helpful. Internet was mostly not working-it's a satellite link which is very weather dependent and only available in the dining/lounge area. Don't come here if you need Internet all the time.

It was surprisingly difficult to find this place. We heard several stories of people getting lost and ending up on tiny dangerous roads. We actually took the Ruta Panoramico, which was very beautiful and scenic. Incredible vistas along the route, nice whole roasted pig at the roadside and surprisingly well maintained roads. Our iPhone maps really helped us not get lost. But make sure you get maps and plan your route in advance. Follow the advice of the hotel.
If you want a beautiful isolated sparse magical mountain jungle retreat, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Room 8 had nice view of mountains from deck

Thank you for your review. "El Camino" is the on premises hiking trail which ambles through the hillside forest. Ceiba and Valle form a loop that begins at a bench 15 minutes into the hike. You can opt for the recently completed Vista portion which has three steep spots where ropes make traversing easier. There's also a 3 hour guided adventure experience to a nearby waterfall. Lago Dos Bocas is a 15 minute car ride away where one can hop on the free public launch to visit the nearby restaurants open on weekends. Caguana Ceremonial Park, Arecibo Observatory, Cueva Ventana and Camuy River Cave Park are within driving distance of the retreat. There are independent local tour operators who offer zipline and river tubing activities.

We suggest you use the bi-lingual directions on our website to find your way to Casa Grande. Googlemaps will direct you onto more precarious roads that also make the trip longer rather than shorter.

considering that what Casa Grande charges per room is comparable with rates at hotels on the island with nice amenities, i was surprised to see how motel-skeletal the rooms were. bare and devoid of charm. the grounds are fine, but nothing to wax rhapsodic about. given the isolated, central/main house layout of the place, what the rooms lack in furnishings *could* be compensated by some hospitality, some cordiality. a communal breakfast? complimentary yoga class or other activity? but anything aside from the bare room was an extra charge.

staff was very nice, and the food was good (both dinner and breakfast). these were highlights. but as far as the management's take on the spirit of a retreat, i'm not impressed.

Thank you for your review. Each of the 20 guest rooms have a private balcony, hammock and two armchairs. The rooms are appointed with custom made headboards and shelving crafted by local furniture makers. There's a good sized mirror and chair, hanging wall baskets for storage, two framed photos of the property's flowers and trees and a poster from an annual local festival. There are reading lamps above the headboards and two wastebaskets, one of which is for recycleable items.. The bathroom has shower with an attractive curtain and a European style sink on a cherrywood stand with a matching mirror above.

We focus our efforts on delivering a high level of customer service and satisfaction and are saddenned that this reviewer was disappointed..

Amazing retreat far up in the mountains. The property is absolutely stunning; sounds of a waterfall, beautiful plants and flowers plus all the beauty of the rainforest. The rooms are very basic, but clean and functional. The best part of the rooms is the hammock on each deck. The yoga classes were solid, and I had one of the best massages I've had anywhere. Then there's the food- overall the best in Puerto Rico. Everything about this retreat is top notch- can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Ask for one facing the valley, better views
