“Excellent Resort Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

Booked for 3 nights bed and breakfast before departing Philipsburg on a Windstar Cruise. Very welcoming staff at reception, room was clean, comfortable and well appointed. Had lunch by the beach one day and was pleasantly surprised - both by the quality of the food served and the reasonable price charged. Bar is lively in the evenings. Grounds are beautifully maintained. We thought the breakfast buffet was excellent - plenty of choice, as serving dishes were emptied they were replenished promptly. The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. WiFi available in both rooms and reception area. Overall, a very pleasant stay, and I recommend it unreservedly.

The view when approaching this resort hotel is breathtaking and the hotel grounds are very beautiful. The swimming pool is enormous and lovely, though i hadn't expected the water to be so cool. On one of our visits to the pool, staff people came around with a tray of small complimentary refreshments, including pomegranate. The small beach is just beyond the pool, but we're not beach people. We appreciated having the use of the fitness room and free wi-fi in our room. In advance of our stay, I had emailed the concierge to ask some questions and to make dinner reservations, one at the hotel on the night of our arrival and two in Grand Case. I received confirmation of those dinner reservations, but when we arrived were told the hotel restaurant would not be open that evening. It turned out it was open, but the front-desk people weren't aware of that. The restaurant is in a beautiful location at the water's edge, but it was pouring when we made our way there and when we got there, the hostess didn't know where to seat us. She kept taking us from place to place and asking us to wait. The food was pleasant, but my husband's portion of bouillabaisse was extremely skimpy, especially on the seafood. We tried the restaurant again the next day for lunch, but found the lobster salad inedible. Luckily, there are a few restaurant options across the road from the hotel. The included breakfast is served in a different facility and can be overly crowded, depending on your timing. One morning there were no available tables and not enough staff to clear and set up; we heard that several people just didn't show up for work! It was chaos. It's a beautiful hotel in a magical setting; they just need to upgrade the food and train their staff better.

After landing and picking up our rental car, the drive across the island was fun and challenging with the final climb over the hill and down to Anse Marcel was a great pay off. We went straight to the beach for a rum beverage and a view of Anguilla as the sunset...great first night.

Given the location we recommend a rental vehicle. We also recommend Villa Pizza just over the hill for an affordable dinner with nice surroundings. Other highlights were the rum tasting offered by one of the bartenders at the resort, lunch on the beach in Grand Case, hitting the market in Marigot and watching the cruise ship passengers take over Philipsburg while we sipped a beverage along the beach.

A great island and this hotel's beach and location were a great way to experience it. The restaurants on site were not great but nearby options along with the market in Grand Case to get some groceries etc. made for a great stay.

In no particular order ...

Resort...
This is the perfect size resort for couples, small enough to make it from room to beach and back, large enough to meet people or to be secluded if you want. Very easy to figure out the lay of the land in less than 1 day.

Resort food...
Very good breakfast, choice of omelets, fresh fruit, breads, pastries, meats, oatmeal, yogurt, etc.; you can be as healthy or not as you like, selection of teas, and coffee served in bodum French press pots, very good if you like stronger coffee. If you’re a dunkin donuts coffee drinker this may be a bit strong for you. lavazza espresso machines also present if that's your thing. Other than the complimentary daily breakfast, the only food we ordered was off the lunch menu and was good, but pricey. We only did lunch day of arrival, and as it turned out this covered our $75 resort credit which was part of our package.

Surrounding Area Restaurants...
Le Calypso, which is right across the street, is the place to go for dinner if you don't want to drive anywhere.

Grand Case Dining...
In addition to having a spectacular beach, Grand Case arguably has the greatest concentration of cuisine anywhere in the Caribbean. Aside from our first night when we ate at Le Calypso, we dined in Grand Case. About 10 minutes away by car, $30 US round trip (w/out tip). This is one of the reasons why renting a car is a no brainer. Every dining experience was great, here's how we rated the restaurants we ate in...
Le Pressoir - we ate here twice, our fav (don’t pass on house dessert)
Auberge Gourmande
Spiga
Ocean 82

Beach…
Is fantastic, one of the primary reasons why you stay at this resort. It serves the 3 hotels in anse marcel, Radisson blu section of beach is best, never too crowded for us. Pool area also nice, but for us, we come for the beach.

Gym…
Was small but we never had a problem finding equip after breakfast. 3 treadmills, 3 elliptical machines, free weight dumbbells and a few weight machines.

Getting around...
Renting a car is a no brainer; small Hyundai for 250 per week did the trick. We went to the French grocery store named Simply, which is less than 10 minutes away from the hotel. We purchased beer, wine, water and some snacks, prices similar to a smaller grocery store in the states. Way cheaper paying $5 for a six pack here then 5 euro per beer at the hotel. We also picked up a nice bottle of whiskey as well as champagne.

Nightlife at Hotel…
After dinner every night upon returning from Grand Case, we set up for a night cap just off the hotel lobby in comfy chairs and couch. Ashtrays are available, and the bartender accommodated us with ice and glasses as needed when asked. Met a couple from MN who we chilled with, smoked cigars, drank and enjoyed their company. Otherwise this is a quiet place at night.

Coffee...
Served in a French press at bkfst is good, inconsistent from day to day but not too strong. Also, there was a Nespresso machine in the room which was a very nice touch for me, had a couple of espressos daily.

Cigars…
I am a cigar smoker and here is my advice…BYO. Cubans were expensive and in some places they're knockoffs. If you’re not capable of spotting fakes you’re taking a chance. If you are set on buying some, go to reputable shop on Dutch side. perhaps on arrival before you drive to the resort.

Other Misc Notes…
Items in mini-fridge very expensive, hotel will rent you a small fridge for 20 euro for the week, definitely the way to go. As mentioned above we stocked water, beer, etc.
Also, there are a few outlets that will accommodate American chargers, converter not necessary.
Make sure you bring lots of singles to tip folks at breakfast, bar, maids, etc. Service here was great and nearly everyone was outstanding and friendly. If you read otherwise then those are the types of folks who find something to complain about wherever they go, we all know who they are, as do they.
Never leave anything of value in your car. Safe in room was typical, and we never felt unsafe anywhere on the Island, but remember, be smart, always!

I wanted to do a review of the beach at the Radisson without rating the Radisson, but that was not possible. The manager at the hotel we stayed at in Oyster Pond recommended that we try the beach at Anse Marcel. Getting there was fun. The car had to go up a few steep hills. Anse Marcel is at the northern end of the island. We realized that you have to go to the Radisson hotel to get to the beach, and we found that they provide free parking. The entire property is beautiful. We walked past the hotel and to the beach which is certainly one of the best on the island. This is a beach with an "Up scale" feel to it. It is certainly because it is next to the Radisson hotel, and the services at the beach are all through the Radisson. The beach is in an inlet so the waves are very calm. It would be the best beach on the island to take kids to, especially if they are small and are afraid of waves. The service on the beach, along with the food is top notch. We had a great day here and heartily recommend that others visit this beach, no matter where they are staying on the island.

just returned from a super relaxing week at Radisson Blu on the french side of the island, st. martin. the beach is beautiful, virtually private and very safe. this hotel is a small resort and is not like the busy, expansive all inclusive resorts. its a nice quiet retreat. the resort has only one main restaurant but is very close to the fantastic restaurants in grand case. just across from the hotel are a couple of dining options including great pizza at calypso. the hotel offers a rental of a small in room refrigerator and expressed no beach/lounge area restriction on refreshments purchased off the property.
the only negative of staying here is there is no evening entertainment.

The Radisson Blu Resort at Anse Marcel, St Martin is a stunningly beautiful hotel with manicured, immaculate grounds, a gorgeous pool area, and a secluded, perfect beach immediately adjacent to the pool. They were having a bit of confusion when we first arrived -- their computers were down and they sent us to a room that was still occupied -- but all got sorted out, and everything went well after that. Sumptuous breakfasts in an open-air dining room are free to hotel guests. The rooms are large and luxurious, with covered balconies and spacious bathrooms -- although the showers have these odd little half doors that do not prevent the floor from getting soaked when you shower, no matter how careful you are. If you rent a car and drive yourself, as we did, be prepared to be "white-knuckled" the first time you navigate the extremely twisty, steep, and narrow road that leads to the hotel. Also, being on the French side, the hotel uses the French standard for electrical power -- 220 volts through a twin-round-pin plug -- so you'll need a converter and plug adapter to charge your cell phone or laptop.
