“Nice, but not 4 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

A nice camp site located close to Jard Sur Mer port area. Jard is a pretty seaside town with a handful of restaurants and shops, and generally clean and well maintained.

Good points:
- Location: the port area is 10 minutes walk and there is a selection of restaurants
- Swimming pool is clean and well maintained with water slides for the kids
- Camping pitches are a reasonable size and nicely shaded
- Each pitch has a tap which is handy for washing & drinking water
- On site bike hire, table tennis, childrens play area

Bad points.
- There is only 1 shower/toilet/washing block is inadequate for the number of visitors and in need of renovation. It is badly designed so you need to walk to a different section to wash your hands after using the toilet
- Of the 10 toilets most are missing the seat, and toilet paper is usually gone even though the cleaners are supposed to replace it each day.
- There are only 10 shower cubicles which are badly designed and pretty ancient. A peak times (morning and 5-6pm) there is often a queue. They are badly designed so the drying & dressing gets wet.
- The beaches at Jard are small and quite rocky and the best one at Les Conches is 10 miles away

So we give it 3 stars not the 4 it claims.

A great campsite with friendly staff. We were staying in our own tent and our friends were on the pitch next door. The majority of the site is mobile homes but there were some tents and caravans. Our pitch was opposite the pool and bar, we were initially worried about the noise but in the first week it was not a problem at all, however the next week was a bit differeent with more of a 'Bar/teenage' crowd arriving!!

The snack bar was good value, the shop contained essentials, and the reception was staffed with people who spoke good english when our french let us down! The arrival and departure was very efficient! Staff were always to be seen tidying and cleaning. Although dated the shower block (only 1...) was clean enough and we personally never found we had to wait very long for the showers and never waited for the toilets. Security staff at night were quite insistent that we were quiet after the bar had closed, however when the teenagers were running, shouting and going mad until past 1am - the security man was nowhere to be seen! 4 people playing cards/dice were obviously an easier approach!!!

Swimming pool was great and all of the kids loved the big slides, we did not adhere to the recommended age limit... There is no shallow beach area of the pool which we first of all though a shame but most of our children improved their swimming so much more because they couldn't reach the bottom - rubber rings were an essential to ensure they didn't just hang off of us all the time!! Playground was brilliant.

Jard Sur Mer is a great town, with gorgeous pattiserie's in town and lovely restaurants in the Port. We hired bikes one day and rode out through the marshes.

Local beaches you can walk to are rocky and 'Plage La Bossivinet' and one near Talmont St Hillaire were mainly sandy but beaware there are rocks in the sea which makes wave jumping a bit scary! We found a perfect sandy beach on our last day at La Terriere, near to Trache Sur Mer - well worth a visit!

The kids loved the Chateau des Adventuriers (Chateau de la Guignardiere)

Would visit the area and Les Ecreuils again!

P.S. We did see Squirrels!

Room Tip: Phone to confirm that you would like a pitches to be together if goign with friends.

This was our first school holiday, holiday, as our boy was 5 this year, so we visited in peak season. Needless to say the site was busy/full.

We were camping in a campervan, so this information does not relate to the mobile homes, of which the park is mostly populated.

The bad stuff:

The shower/washing/toilet block needs updated, badly. It's old and tired. There aren't really enough toilets at peak times.

It's kind of tight with not a huge amount of space/privacy between pitches. Our pitch was big enough, but they have maximized their potential income.

At busy times, there was a lack of seats/sun loungers around the pool, although they did try to manage it well with maintenance staff collecting chairs not being used and recycling them for others use.

The good stuff:

Great spot, easy to town and the beach (not a sandy beach though, at least the nearest one). Super U about a 10 min bike ride away. Jard Sur Mer is a great little town with everything you would need.

Pizzas served from the surly staff at the snack bar were really great for the money.

Reception was friendly, helpful with excellent English. The ground staff were friendly and multi functional. One guy who swept up the leaves one day was DJing in the bar a couple of nights later!

Security was good. Kids were safe. Playground and facilities for the kids and teens were good for a site of this size.

The pool outside was warm and heated. This was excellent given the temperatures were in the mid 20's.

Very close to the port which had a few nice restaurants.

Overall, it's not a big site, so don't expect all of the bells and whistles, but I have no complaints (apart from the shower block). Great for Kids (better for French as there were many french staying on site, not so many other nationalities).

A nice quite relaxing holiday was had.

We ventured here a couple of years ago from a recommendation with our large touring caravan.
Initially the pitch was too small but they kindly moved us to a large corner plot. Excellent location, safe cycling for children along coast roads . 2 swimming pools, outside one very good, bar well kept & friendly with live music & small acts on certain evenings well run & catered for families no groups getting rowdy Jard sur Mer easy walking distance with many fine restaurants. Lovely Harbour. Superb supermarche in town, wet fish counter to die for !So good we came back for 2 weeks the next year, stayed in one of their chalets very well equipped between pine trees, large deck for 'Al Fresco'. Would highly recommend as one of the better sites we have stayed at.*****
Small supermarket on site for freshly baked baguettes, pizza to order & wine !!

We booked 2 weeks at the end of the season in this campsite, the price plummeted in September, the ferry price also dropped a lot. We were very lucky with the weather, it rained 1 day and for a few hours another day. Otherwise it was warm +28degC and sunny most every other day. The camp site was getting quiet from when we arrived and was closing a few days after we left. I thing it gets very busy in the peak of the summer, (plus expensive then also). We got fantastic value for our money here on this holiday. It took ~ 5 hours to drive down form the Ferry in Cork-Roscoff (overnight, wake up fresh the other side if the sea is not rough;-), take a DVD player if you have kids. The staff have pretty good English when you call on the phone and call to reception. They are very helpful. Bring a GPS, we'd be killing each other on the road if we didn't have one ;-) It will cost you a lot more to stay here in the main summer period, can’t say how busy it gets, but I reckon its would be v busy. You could be unlucky weather wise in Sept, but that's the chance you take when you book cheap at the end of the season.
We booked the Moon+ a 2 bed room mobile home with kitchen/dining, shower, loo, ideal for us and our 2 year old. You could probably sleep 2 kids in the 2nd room easily. There was a lovely wooden decking and rain cover, nice. cooker had 4x gas rings, no grill or oven, there is a microwave. There is an option to rent a gas barque and bed linen, but we didn't bother, brought our own sheets and a duvet, in a rented 450l roof box, I totally recommend a large roof box. Our room had a double bed and the kids room had 2x small beds, there were pillows and blankets... The mobile home was lovely! They have them smaller and bigger depending on how many you are.
The faculty are great here for kids. Lovely outdoor pool, water slides, an indoor pool for wet days, these pools are not small. The sand pit was excellent, a 7+ room wooden Wendy house, our baby had a great time here, swings, slides etc. Most nice days we spent time on the site chilling out and playing with our toddler in the sand or in the pool. There are a few loo/shower houses dispersed around the site. And a main laundry room near the indoor pool. A small gym room also. Crazy golf, bar (closed in Sep) small shop on site for basics.
This camp site is out in the country near the western ocean, 300m to the beach, but the sea is very wild here and rocky => dangerous IMO for swimming, probably better for boating and surfing. Not for small kids. The town is small, has a nice centre, with good small shops. The oysters are v good here, its the right region for oysters.
Its a 20min drive to local things to do, like the Aquarium, Zoo, Castle, Petting Farm (closes in Sep). An hour and a half to La Rochelle, very nice town on the coast.
There is a small wood around the back of the site, nice for walking, running etc.
We did see brown squirrels a few times on the site. There is a pretty ok SuperU in the town for most your needs. The nearest good Carrefour is in la roche-sur-yon or LaRochele.
You are expected to leave the home as clean and neat when you leave, otherwise you lose your deposit that is taken against your CC on your arrival, but not charged unless they need it in the end. It took us the whole last morning and the previous night to clean it up properly. Allow yourself plenty of time for this!
